John and Edus (Paine) Spanjer, Bryant and Haxtun



In 1910 Johnson County, Nebraska, Edus Paine is 15, with Walter and Emma. Chancy is 13 and Edwin is 5.

Edus' parents Walter L. 1863-1938 # 39568800 and Emma M. 1870-1954 # 39568842 are buried in Cook, Nebraska.

In 1900 Otoe County, Nebraska, Menne born May 1860, Lizzie Dec 1871,k both Germany have been married 14 years. She's had seven children, four living. Menne April 1893, John Sept 1896, Mary May 1898, and Greta March 1900.
In 1910 Otoe County, Nebraska, John is 14, with parents Mene 48 and Elsabe 38. Merse is 16, Mary 12, Grace 10, Lena 7, Anna 4, and Alja 2.
John registered for WWI in Otoe County, working for his father at Burr, Otoe, County.
Edus Estella Paine married John Spanjer in Johnson County, Nebraska.
In 1920 A. Spanger owned the north half of 6, 5N 47W - the furtherest northwest corner of Yuma County. A church - that would be near the site of the Leslie post office and store - was in the quarter south of him.
He was delinquent on taxes in 1922.
In 1930 John and Eous are farming in north Yuma County, with Ramona 1, born in Colorado.

In 1940 Haxtun, John and Eous S. are running a grocery, both 44 born in Nebraska. Ramona M. S., daughter 11, born in Colorado, is with them.
John registered for WWII in Haxtun, a merchant born i Gage County, Nebraska.
February 1949 "Ramona Spanjer and Elmer Jernberg were married in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Spanjer, in Haxtun."

JOHN SPANJER LAID TO REST

Funeral services were held for John Spanjer Wednesday, May 11, 1988 at the Haxtun United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Davis officiating and burial following in the Haxtun Cemetery. John passed away Friday, May 6 at Logan County Hospital, Sterling at the age of 92.
John Spanjer was born in Adams County, Nebraska on September 9, 1895, the son of Menne and Elsaba Miller Spanjer. He attended school at Burr, Nebraska.
He started farming as a young man in Nebraska. Later he came to Yuma County, Colorado in 1919 and worked for a while before returning to Nebraska. On December 25, 1919 he married Edus E. Paine at Cook, Nebraska. They moved to a farm north of Yuma, in 1923. In 1936 they returned to Cook, where they made their home until 1938 when they moved to Haxtun. They operated a grocery store for a period of time.
Edus died in 1965. On June 7, 1966, John married Dorothy G. (Potter) Riley, Haxtun at Hugo, Colorado. They made their home in Haxtun where Dorothy continued to teach Vocational Home Economics until her retirement in 1972. Dorothy passed away February 13, 1986. John continued to make his home in Haxtun until March of 1987 when he moved to the High Plains Manor in Yuma.
John had been an active member of the Haxtun Senior Citizens and also helped with the Meals-on-Wheels program. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising flowers. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his stepdaughter Mrs. Elmer (Ramona) Jernberg, Yuma; stepson Fred Riley and wife Marilee, Holyoke; four sisters: Emma Weibke and Anna George, both of Cook, Nebraska; Lena Bliefernich, Sterling, Nebraska; Grace Wittstock, Seward, Nebraska; sister-in-law Mary Spanjer, Cook, Nebraska; brother-in-law Ray Roesener, Cook, Nebraska; grandchildren: Shirley Wiebers and husband Gale, Yuma; Betty Jo Searcy and husband Derek, Brush; Keith Jernberg, Yuma; step grandchildren Scot Riley and Beth Riley, Holyoke; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edus; wife, Dorothy; brothers Ben and Allen; and sisters Frieda Roesener and Mary Spanjer.

RAMONA
In 1986 Ramona attended a reunion of the Haxtun class of 1946 "Husband Elmer, three children - Shirley Wieberst, Betty Jo Searcy and Keith Jernberg. Farm wife and bookkeeper, presently living in Yuma."


2015 - Chelsea and Luke Clouse of Sterling are parents of a girl, Adaline Rhea Louise Clouse, born Aug. 24, 2015, weighing 7 lbs. 12 oz. and measuring 21 inches long. Grandparents are Sonya Contreras of Sterling, Keith and Pat Jernberg of La Junta, and Tom and Codi Cass of Sterling. Great-grandparents are Ramona Jernberg, Laura Mae Chartier, Virginia Cass, and Janet and Don Nab. Welcoming Adaline home were her siblings, Elaura and Jadelynn.
