1928 "William Ottele of near Yuma, arrested last week by Sheriff Yates after a fifty gallon still had been found on his place was released on bond after his hearing held here. His case is set for trial at the spring term of the district court.
The account of the finding of the still is taken from the Yuma Pioneer of last week. 'Undersheriff John Myers and Deputy Chas. Scott captured a 50 gallon still and a number of barrels of mash at the Ottele farm 18 miles north of Yuma, Friday night and took Bill Ottele into custody. At a preliminary hearing, it is said that Ottele admitted possession of the still and mash.
He was bound over to the district court. Conviction of owning a still carries a sentence of from two to five years in the state penitentiary.
Officers making the raid say the captured still was located underground near a hog house. The only entrance to the dugout was from the building and this had been carefully covered with straw to avoid detection. None of the men were around when the raid was made, the arrest coming later. Deputy Sheriff Scott had had suspicions that a still was being operated in that locality for some time, and altho he would not say as much, it was evident that he was tipped off last week as to the exact location.
He immediately called up the undersheriff and the raid followed.'"
