August 13, 1938 "Mangus H. Herrlin, 80 years old,
who was severely burned Wednesday afternoon of last week when
fire destroyed his farm home about twenty-two miles north of Yuma,
died at 12:30 o'clock Thursday morning in a Sterling hospital.
After preparing his lunch Wednesday noon, Mr. Herrlin,
who lived alone, lay down to sleep. The room was full of flames
when he awoke and in escaping from the burning room he was burned
on the chest, head, face, back, hands and arms.
He jumped into a water tank, quenching the flames from his clothing.
A neighbor, George Gould, seeing the fire, drove to the Herrlin
farm and took the injured man to Sterling.
Mr. Herrlin, an uncle of W. E. Hansen and Mrs. Sam Bird,
had lived in Yuma county for forty years.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the
Swedish Lutheran church at Haxtun and were conducted
by Rev. Fondell of Fairfield. Interment was at the Yuma cemetery."
