last week, and their route was on the old Bobtail road-bed.
till they struck the bottom below town;
crossing Independence Creek near and below the farm house
of the old Hiachniaa place, thence towards Peter Cummings

Peter was an old timer on Wolf River.
He tells some very interesting stories of the early
days here. It seems that the biggest flood that
ever swept down the valley of Wolf river came in the spring
of 1865. John Cummings, Peter's father, lived near Hooper's ford.
Cummings himself was in Missouri when the flood came,
and surrounded the house, rising to the windows.
Three of the boys Peter, Jim and Jo climbed up on the roof
of the house and sat astride of the comb,
like so many clothespins on a line, waiting for someone
to come and take them ashore. "

March 1, 1918 Severance, Kansas, "Caroline Cummings, born June 25, 1840 in Alabama to Parker Hooper,
one of tne first settlers on Wolf River in the Hooper's Ford neighborhood,
and theirs was the first marriage in the township. They were married in 1855
by A. Q. Rice, the first justice of the peace, there being no minister near
at that time. At the time of her marriage the bride was
but 14 years of age. She became the mother of eleven children.
Her husband had three children from a previous marriage.
Mrs. Cummings was a daughter of Parker Hooper, who was killed by her husband
near the Cummings home in April, 1861. The shooting was in self defense.
On numerous occasions Hooper had threatened the the life of Cummings,
but not until Hooper attacked him openly with the evident intention of killing
him, did Cummings determine to "have it out" with him.
A few of the old timers here still remember the details of this early day
tragedy. Cummings died several years ago at an advanced age.
He was a quiet, unassuming man and a good citizen.
Hooper, whom Cummings killed, had been a soldier in the Mexican war.
He was haughty and overbearing, and was something of a braggart.
He never liked his son-in-law, Cummings, and there was strife and
dissatisfaction until the day of Hooper's death. The death of Mrs. Cummings removed from the stage of life the last actor in that dark drama enacted in the Wolf River woods more than fifty years ago. "
