JOHN W.
" It was sad news to the people of this vicinity when word reached here that a former resident had accidentally met death at Wessington, S.D., and that the remains would be shipped to Brush for interment.
The following account of the death is taken from the Huron, (S.D.) Herald of May 9th:
John W. Carlson, of Wessington, was the man killed by a C. & N.W. train in the local yards in this city yesterday. The coroners jury called yesterday morning, after hearing the evidence in connection with the case brought the following verdict:
"We, the jury, find that John Carlson was hit by engine No. 722, train No. 27 west bound, as it was pulling into Huron, in the east end of the Chicago and Northwestern yards and died from the effects thereof a short time thereafter. We find from the evidence that John Carlson, while in a mentally deranged condition, deliberately placed himself in front of said engine."
Deceased was a business man of Wessington where he and his brother are conducting a confectionary store. Immediate friends of the dead man have recently noticed that his actions were rather peculiar, and on the day of his death he acted rather strangely while about the city, his condition however was not considered by friends to be serious. Mr. Carlson was an industrious young man of clean moral habits, he being especially active in church work in his home town. He was well educated and bore a splendid reputation where he was known. His identification this morning was made by a laundry mark on his wearing apparel. His brother, Chas. O. Carlson at Wessington was immediately notified and came to Huron by auto and at once recognized the body as that of his brother.
The remains reached Brush Tuesday morning accompanied by his brother, Charles O. and funeral services conducted by Rev. Cameron of Brush, and Rev. Edgerton of Fort Morgan, were held in the Methodist church in the afternoon and the remains laid away beside those of his mother in the Brush cemetery.
The deceased was born January 31st, 1885 in Omaha. When about ten years old he moved with his parents to 14 miles south of Brush. He was educated in the Brush and Fort Morgan schools, graduating from the latter. Five years ago this summer he went to Wessington, SD, where he was a business associate with his brother until his death.
He joined the Methodist church at Brush when 14 years old and had been an earnest and active worker in Wessington church circles. He was twice elected justice of the peace of his home town and was a highly respected citizen.
