Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Leila (Gifford) Botteron and sister Grace (Gifford) Gatten, Brownsville

In 1885 Brown County Kansas, Augus Botteron 56 and Eliza 47 have Ulysis 18, Homman 15, Arnold 10, and Albert 7.

In 1900 Brown County Charles Botte.... 75, France, and Aliza J. 60 Switzerland have Albert - April 1878 in Switzerland - a day laborer.  Charles 1827-1906 65260096 and Eliza  1839-1908 are in Hiawatha Cemetery, Brown County.

A. Botteron, of Hiawatha died in Brown County April 1906.

JOSEPHINE I. THOMAS, born August 13, 1867 in Washington Co Virginia, and died December 14, 1928 in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co Missouri. She married CHARLES ULYSSES BOTTERON on September 20, 1887.  The son of Charles August Botteron and Eliza J., he was born January 23, 1868 in Bern Nods Switzerland, and died August 01, 1925 in Springfield, Greene Co Missouri.    They had 13 children.

In 1880 Washington County Illinois James 32 and Margrette Gifford 23, have Lilla May, 2.

James Monroe Gifford - per FindAGrave 82785748, is buried in Fremont County Iowa, dying March 15, 1885. 

"Parents: Jefferson Gifford and Elizabeth Myers Gifford; w-Sarah Margaret McGunnigle Gifford, children: Leila Mae Gifford Wilson Botteron, Rhoda Elizabeth "Eliza" Gifford Trudell, and Grace Monroe Gifford Gatten.  "  Sarah's FAG says that Lela/Leila Mae Gifford Botteron is buried in Denver.

In 1885 Fremont County Iowa Margaret Gifford, single 29, has L.M. 6, Eliza 4, and Margeret, 1, all three born in Illinois.

In 1900 Otoe County, Nebraska Maggie Gifford March 1855 in Illinois, is a day laborer, divorced with Leila Nov 1878 Illinois, a cereal worker.  Grace July 1883 in Iowa, is a waiter, and Laura Bishoff July 1888 in Kansas, is at school.

In 1910 San Francisco Albert W. Botteron, 31, a German Swiss, is a railroad brakeman, immigrating in 1880. He's married to Leila M. , 31, born in Illinois, father Ohio, mother Illinois.

May 1912 San Francisco Call "Leila Batteron has been sued for divorce for desertion. Did she leave the batter on the stove when she went?"

Albert W. Batteron filed the suit against Leila M. Beatteron.  May 17, 1912 San Francisco Call.

In 1913 "Mrs. Leila Bottom" had unclaimed mail at the Yuma post office.

In 1914 "Miss Leila Batteron" had unclaimed mail at the Yuma post office.

Leila proved up two quarters in 23, 2S 47W in 1916.  Then in 1921 she claimed a quarter in section 35 for Stock Raising.

1917 "Mrs. Walter Geton and sister Mrs. Lola Bottron, Mrs. Jannie Caster, and Mrs. Robert McDaniel spent Friday at Dr. Brown's."

1910 "Walter Gatten arrived from Hastings this week and went out to his homestead some twenty miles southwest of Vernon."

The 1910 Hastings census has Walter 32, Grace 26, Norma 5, Aphrodite 3, and Grace ten months.

1913 "Mrs. Mauer Gatten and children were in from their ranch south of Yuma the first of the week."

May 23, 1913 "Walter Gatten arrived post haste from Omaha, Monday, in response to a telegram announcing the birth of a fine boy at the homestead north east of town.  All concerned are foing (sic) nicely."

1914 "The mother of Mrs. Walter Gatten, of south of town, arrived from Missouri this morning."

1914 "Mr. Gatten delivered an automobile to Mr. Conrad of Idalia Tuesday."

In 1915 Walter Gatten was a representative of the P. & O.  Plow Co.  At a implement demonstration show "Mr. Gatten who has a  homestead in this county  has arranged to entertain G.M. Durhee, manager of the Omaha branch of that company, at his homestead Sunday, eating turkey and drinking unadulterated milk"

May 17, 1917

June 21, 1917 "Walter Gatten's are going to have a dance in their barn Saturday, June 23.  Everydoby (sic) invited and ladies please bring cake."

1917 "Mrs. Walter Gatten is suffering with her teen this week and had to go to Wray and have them treated."

Walter Gatten proved up 320 acres in 14 and 15, 2S 47W in 1916, next to Leila.  Then in 1921 he claimed another two quarters in 1, 3S 47W.

Rhodesa May Gatten Infant daughter of Walter H. (Miller) Gatten and Grace Monroe (Gifford) Gatten, born and died in 1920, and is buried in Yuma.

Gatten Lodessa M. 1921 New Addition 43 Yuma Cemetery.

1922 Yuma County directory Gatten, Walter, Rancher, PO Happyville, came to Yuma County in 1911, Born Ohio 1877, married Grace M  Gifford, seven children. Mr Gatten is a veteran of the Spanish-American War.

Grace Monroe GIFFORD Gatten Born in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa July 17, 1883 to James Monroe Gifford (burial unknown) and Sarah Margaret (McGunnigle) Gifford Bishoff; wife of Walter H. (Miller) Gatten; mother of 13 children: Juanita Lucille, Norma, Aphrodite "Deta", Grace Juanita "Sis", Walter "Bud", Gifford Monroe, Joseph Roland, Leila Margaret, James Solomon, Rhodesa May, Doris Lenore, Maxine Alberta, and Robert Ross Gatten. 

Died August 5, 1943 in Montana, buried Lakeview Cemetery in Polson, Lake Co., MT with her husband Walter Gatten. See at Find A Grave 20962058

Norma Southwell, 86, died at her Molalla, Oregon home early Saturday morning on May 4. She was born in Nebraska City, Otoe County, Neb., Nov. 24, 1904 Walter & Grace Monroe Gatten.

In 1911, she moved with her family to Colorado. As the oldest of 13 children, she attended school in Colorado and in 1920 she met Glenn Southwell. They were married in Wray, Colo., Oct. 29, 1921. In 1940 they moved to Oregon, settling in Molalla where they have lived for over 50 years. Mrs. Southwell was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Molalla Methodist Church and AARP.

Survivors are her husband, Glenn; sons, Walter G. of Sun City West, Ariz:, Raymond E. of Sherwood, Allen of Aurora; daughters, Colleen Wolfer of Keizer, Dixie Sanders of Alaska, Norma Dee Robertson of Molalla, JoAnn Southwell of Wilsonville (2 sons deceased); a brother, Gifford Gatten of Bothel, Wash.; sisters, Deta Boyd of Prineville, Grace Long of Ronan, Montana, Doris Wickard of Renton, Wash., and Maxine Smith of Redlands, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and 29 great
grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. May 8 in the Molalla Methodist Church with private interment in Zion Memorial Park Cemetery, Canby, Oregon. (Molalla Pioneer Newspaper, Clackamas, Oregon) 
 
 

In 1921 and 1922 Denver, Mrs. Luella Botteron is a waitress, rooming at 607 22nd

Paul Wilson, 54, married May Botteron, 45, in Boulder January 24, 1924.    The 1924 Denver directory has Paul (Lela) Wilson, a miner, living at 2660 Stout.

There's a Paul Wilson in Teller County in 1910, a gold miner, 40 born in Indiana, married nine years to Florence 30, born in Iowa, no children.  Paul Wilson had married Florence C. McLaughlin October 6, 1900.  Florence June 1879 Iowa,  was with parents Charles and Catherine McLaughlin in 1900 Teller County (both buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Victor, Teller County)

Bet she's the Florence G. Wilson 1879-1915 buried in Victor, Colorado -

 

Leila M. Botteron's will was probated in Denver in 1924.  So was one for Leila M. "ZS" Wilson.
