James Andrew and Emma Jane (Turner) Bates, Brownsville

James and Emma were married May 23, 1875 in Sherburne, Vermont

In 1880 they're farming in Sherburne, with Norman L. 4, Alice M. 2, Harry L. seven months.

On the same page are Edwin and Clara Colton, both 33, with Vernie I. 8, Grant E. 1, Floyd H. eight mohts, and father Silas Colton 81.

The 1881 directory says James A. Bates lived on Route 8, Sherburne, and had 140 acres farm land and 50 acres mountain.

1885 Sherburne James A. BATES' little son, of about ten years, slid from a wagon loaded
with sawdust, by the forward end-board slipping out. The wheels passed
over his body. The doctor thought that two or three of his ribs were
broken or fractured, but he is as comfortable as could be expected. It
happened one day last week; he has been out of doors since.
 

James cash-claimed a quarter in 10, 2S 47W in 1891 - next to Jennie and Lyman Colton

In 1900 Jefferson County, Colorado James A. Bates is farming, Dec 1851 Vermont - just like Lyman, and Emma J. Aug 1856 have been married 25 years.  Harry Oct 1879, Frances Aug 1881, Walter Oct 1884, Angie Aug 1886 were all born in Vermont, and Carrie Apr 1888 in Colorado.

Frances' obituary said she was born in Sherburne Center (same town as the Colton's)

1910 Jefferson County "James Bates, brother of M.L., visited the family last week."

That land - James A. Bates and Emma J. Bates - was to be sold at auction Oct 21, 1911 at the courthouse in Wray to repay a note to Thomas N. Moffett.

James is in an unmarked grave in the Arvada Colorado cemetery, dying March 30, 1940  20899787

Emma 1861-Nov 25, 1925 is also there in an unmarked grave.
