Carl A. and Alma Root, Gustaf A.  and Flora May (Lathrom) Root,  Dorus and Adeline Root,  Kirk
 

Peter Root, another successful tiller of the soil and prominent stock raiser of Burdine Township, was born in Middle Sweden, Skofde, November 11, 1850, and is the son of John and Joannah Root.  The father was a blacksmith by occupation, and came to America in 1869.  He  settled at Moline, Ill., but subsequently returned to Sweden.  Peter Root learned farming and railroading in the old country, and in 1871 crossed the ocean to America.  He first located in Putnam County, N. Y., and worked in the Tilly Foster Iron Mines there for four years.
In 1874 he came to Missouri, and worked at farming near Verona until 1878, when he started for Prescott, Ariz., and went from there to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he spent eighteen months; thence to Silver Cliff, Colo., and finally to Cabool, MO., where he has since remained.  He was married at Verona, MO., to Miss Anna Gustafson, a native of Sweden, who came to America in 1872.  To this marriage were born four sons and one daughter: Albert (This must be Gustaf A.) , Carl, Edward, Ellen Dora and John William.  Mr. Root has 160 acres of nice land, and pays considerable attention to the raising of fine stock.  He has served with credit as a member of the school board, and he and wife are worthy members of the Lutheran Church.

Peter Root is in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico in 1880, 40, born in Sweden, working on a railroad.

Peter was named the postmaster of David, Texas County, April 9, 1898

Gustof Root succeeded him August 9, 1900.

There was a Gustaf Root marrying Anna Christine Flodberg in Verona, Lawrence County in 1874, witnesses Mr. A.P Root and Mrs. ? A. Root., and an Mrs. Anna Christine Flodberg, born 1859 in Sweden, daughter of John Flodberg, married John August Johnson in Jasper County Missouri in 1880, and ALSO DIED IN TURLOCK CALIFORNIA in 1941. Informant was Mrs. Emma Mowrer

O.M. Root, male, born August 15, 1888 in Texas County, Missouri to Peter Root - wife's maiden name Guslibose?

 Peter Root in 1900 Texas County, Missouri, born Nov 1850, married to Annie Feb 1853, both Swedish, with Dora March 1883 and John August 1888, both born in Missouri.  One tree said that Peter died February 3, 1934 in Kirk "Peter Root and Anna Greta Gustafson Story." 

 Peter, Anna, and Dora are in Eureka, California in 1910, and Peter and Anna are there in 1920.  They're in Lane County, Oregon in 1930.  Buried in Eureka California are Anna Root - 1847 -1930 and Peter - 1850-1934.

ADALINE and DORUS

 Stephen J. Belding was born Nov 8, 1792 in Sullivan, New Hampshire to Karly Belding and Eunice Cobleigh.  The History of the Town of Sullivan says Karley and Eunice had one child,, Stephen Johnson Belding.  Karley's father Stephen Belding died in Winchester July 3, 1813 - his will, mentioning nine children, said grandson. "I give to my grandson Stephen Johnson Belding son of my son Kerley Belding the remaining quarter part of my real estate after my just debts, funeral charges and legacies are paid."

Stephen and Martha are buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Muscatine County Iowa.

Dorus S. Root married Catherine E. Searl October 22, 1842 in Southampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  In 1850 Hampshire County Catherine Root and Russell are living with Ira and Catherine Searl.

 Catherine is single in 1860 and 1870  with a son Russell.  She died in Massachusetts July 18, 1889, born 1812, parents Ira and Catherine Searle, and is buried in Center Cemetery- FindAGrave 76311159 has a death year of 1880.

  Russell died Aug 17, 1881 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, parents Doras and Catherine Root.

Russell S. Root, 23, married Marietta Cummings January 18, 1871 in Springfield, Massachusetts - he was son of Dorus and Catherine Root..

"Lorus" S. Root married Adaline A. Belding July 1, 1851 in Knox County, Illinois.

In 1856 Muscatine County, Iowa Darus is 36, born in Massachusetts, with Adaline, 25, Vermont.   They've been in Iowa for three years.  Next household is S.J. Belding , 60, widowed and "Unis" 26, single.   In 1885 Muscatine Eunice L. Beldin, 58, is living with Abigail Major, 65.

 In 1860 Muscatine County, Iowa D.S. Root is 39, Adeline 32, James T. 2 (must be Thaddeus).  Adeline's father S.J. Belding and sister Eunice Belding, 34, a school teacher, are living with them.

In 1880 Adair County, Iowa, Adaline A. Root is 51, born in Vermont married to Darias, born in Massachusetts.  They have Thaddeus S. Root, 23, born in Iowa.

Thadeus S. Root married Ida B. Henderson (should be HUDDLESON ) in Fox, Colorado Feb 18, 1896, minister .D. Bullard of Laird. 

Adeline Root proved up a quarter in 23, 5S 47W in 1903.  She's in Kirk precinct in 1910, 81, widowed, born in New Hampshire, no children living. She's also in the 1910 Marion County, Iowa census, with nephew Harlan G. Bailey, 48, both widowed.  Harlan has Chester 18, Vera, 16, and Charley 8.  Harlan's mother  (Adaline's sister) was Vashti Demy BELDING Bailey, born March 8, 1824 in Vermont, dying July 28, 1890 in Iowa.

Another sister of Adaline, Sarah Ann Belding, born 1834 in Michigan, married Reuben Richardson, and died 1880 in Linn County Iowa, per FindAGrave  72786657.

FindAGrave has Adaline buried in Kirk cemetery, dying February 18, 1911 "Wife of Dorus S. Root - his wife aged 83 Y" and  "Dorus S. " born 1819, dying Nov 27, 1899 "aged 80 Y"  28339870 and Thadeus S. Root dying January 17, 1901 "aged 45 Y."

Alice M. Root cash-claimed a quarter in 8, 1N 48W - about thirty miles away, and homesteaded a quarter in 26, 3N 47W in 1903 - even further away.  Her land in 1N 48W was near Charles M. Root's cash claim  in 1890.

CARL

In 1900 Phillips County, Kansas, C. A. Root born August 1877 in Colorado, is newly married to A. O. July 1875 in Sweden.  She said she immigrated in 1881.  Brother E.P. March 1880 in New Mexico, is also with them.  He might be the Edward P. Root in 1910 Esmeralda County Nevada, working in a stamp mill.

In 1910 Kirk precinct Carl A. Root is 33, born in Missouri, married ten years to Alma O. Root, 34, born in Sweden.

Also in 1910, he applied to lease the north half of section 16 - a "school section."

Gustaf and Carl each proved up a quarter in 15, 5S 46W in 1911.  Carl's witnesses were Alvin A. Tyler, Lewis G. Davis, Joe Furgeson, and Will Clark, all of Tuttle.

1916 "Carl Root has ordered a new hardwood floor for his hall at Tuttle."

"Edna Barbeon is clerking in the Root store in Tuttle."

Carl registered with a Kirk address, saying he was born August 31, 1877.

In 1920 Kirk precinct Carl A. and Alma A. said they both were born in Missouri..

In 1922 Carl made application to lease all of section 16, 5S 46W - a "school section."

In 1930 Kirk precinct Carl and Alma are still farming - he said he was born in New Mexico - and they have two laborers with them.

Carl and Alma are in Kirk precinct in 1940.

SSDI has Carl Root, born August 31, 1877 dying May 1972.

Our community was quite saddened this week to learn of the death of Carl A. Root, a long time resident of the community. Mr. Root passed away at the Cedardale Rest Home in Wray about 5 p.m. Thursday May 25, after several months of illness. Funeral services were held at the Liberty school Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and burial was in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Root entered the Burlington Hospital in Wray March 16 where he remained until his death. His stepdaughters, Mrs. Dorothy Dibble and Mrs. Helen Seelye have been here with their mother, at separate times, during most of his illness. Mrs. Helen Seelye was here with her mother at the time of his death, and the other daughter and her husband, Wesley and Dorothy Dibble and Helen's husband Norman Seelye, all of New York, arrived Saturday night. All will remain until after the funeral and are not sure yet how much longer. An obituary will follow next week.

Carl Alfred Root, dying 1972, is buried in Crown Hill, Alma Root, dying 1952, is in the same plot.

Gustaf dying 1946 and Flora May Root dying 1939 are in the same plot.

Seelye, Norman T. - Greece, New York: January 5, 2009 at age 80. Norman is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Helen Seelye; sister, Alice (Robert) Colegrove; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Barbara Hoy; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends.

GUSTAF

Flora is with parents John and Lily Lathrom in 1880 Wright County, Missouri.

Gustaf A. Root, under 21,  of Texas County, Missouri, married Flora M. Lathron, over 18, of Wright County, June 27, 1896.  "Peter Root the father of Gustaf Root giving his assent." 

Gustaf and Flora are in Norton Kansas in 1905, with Vergola, Eva, Vern , and Doyne.

In 1910 Kit Carson County Gustaf is 35, Flora 36, both born in Missouri, married 14 years.  They have Vergola 12, born in Missouri, Eva 11, born in Illinois, Vern (daughter) 9, Missouri, Doyne (daughter) 7 Missouri, Edgar 5, Kansas, and Greta 3, Colorado.

Gustaf registered with a Stratton address, saying he was born August 12, 1875, and was a clerk for J.C. Bradshaw of Stratton, and nearest relative was Flora May Root.   (Daughter Vergola married Joel C. Bradshaw Jr. March 2, 1919, and died March 1968 in Stratton - buried in Burlington  89392671 )

Eva married Claude C. Lewis March 20, 1917, recorded in Kit Carson County. Claude registered with a Stratton address, saying he was born Nov 4, 1892 in Dade County, Missouri, was a barber working for T.H. Alstal, and had a wife and child.  In 1920 Castle Rock, Colorado Claude and Eva have Gereldine 3, Claudine 1, and nine-month old Tim A.  In 1930 Enid, Oklahoma Claude is a barber, and they have Geraldine 13, Claudine J. 12, Thomas A. 10, Frederick D 9, these four born in Colorado,  Billy D. 4 born in Missouri, and Fred O. brother 39, born in Arkansas.  In 1940 Enid Claude is still a barber, and he and Eva have Tommy 21, Frederick 19, Billy 15, Bobby 13, and now have Donnie 7, Betty 7, Greta 4, and James ten months, these last five born in Oklahoma.

Eva is buried in Enid 105916268- Born Feb 17, 1899 in Jersey County, Illinois, dying July 13, 1975 in Enid.

California death index has Alma May Huckaby born April 29, 1910, dying April 13, 1993 in Los Angeles - Father surname Root, mother's Lathrom.

Doyne Root married Harry G. Hickey in Denver August 14, 1921.  In 1930 Harry is 30,  a cement salesman in Denver, Doyne is 27, born in Missouri, with Lorraine 6, John D. 4, and Harry's parents Harry 73 and Sally 63.

Indianapolis 1903

Demands $5,000 for Dog Bite. Five thousand dollars compensation for a dog bite was the demand of Harry G. Hickey, a three - year - old baby, through his father, Harry Hickey. According to the complaint the little fellow wandered into the yard of John Sanders, 2322 Prospect street, one day last May. The dog which belonged to Sanders, attacked him and bit him in the face, disfiguring him for life.

Harry and Doyne are in Jefferson County in 1940, with Lorraine 16 and Jack 14.

Doyne A. Hickey - Nov 21, 1902 - Mar 7, 1996 is buried in Fort Logan 787473  - So is Harry G. - June 8, 1899 - Mar 1, 1983.

 

In 1920 Denver G.A. is a carpenter, and they have Doyne, Edgar A., Greta A., Alma M. 9, and Carl E. 7.

In 1930 Denver Edgar is a dental technician, married to Vera J., and they have Richard E. -  Gustaf is still a carpenter, with Flora, Alma, and Carl - a messenger for a dental office.

Flora died in February 1939, and is buried in Crown Hill

Gustave A. Root married Mae Hill in Denver September 13, 1939.

In 1940 Albert G. Root, 64, born in Missouri, is a carpenter in Denver with Mae, 68, born in Pennsylvania.  Cyril Grant, 33, born in Illinois, is a son.

The 1945 Denver directory has Gustaf A. and May Root living at 956 Inca.

Ida Mae Root - Jan 22, 1872 - Apr 6, 1973 is buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver 84100969

One tree said Gastaf Albert Root, born in Verona, Lawrence County, Missouri, died September 14, 1946 in Denver.

Crown Hill Cemetery has Gustaf Root dying 1946 and Flora dying 1939.  Flora's death is in the Denver newspapers of February 7, 1939.

 JOHN W. ROOT - Kit Carson County

In 1900 Burt County Nebraska, Sylvetus J. and Luella P. Smith have Carrie V. born July 1888 in Iowa.

In 1910 Tuttle precinct, Kit Carson County, Carrie B. Smith is 21, born in Iowa, with parents Sylvius J. and Luella Smith.  Sylvetus J. 1864-1955 and Luella P. Smith 1868-1954 are buried in Greeley.65309057

John W. Root married Carrie V. Smith May 27, 1913 in Kit Carson County.

In 1920 Eureka California John is 32, Carrie 31, with Ivan W. 5, California Doris Irene 4, born in Colorado, Kenneth C., 3, and Violet E. 2.

John and Carrie V. are in Lane County Oregon in 1930, with Ivan W. 16, Dorris I. 14, Kenneth C. 13, Violet E. 12, Betty M. 10, Harmony E. 8, June A. 6, Eva E. 5, and Joey E. 3.

John W. Root is farming in 1940 Merced County, California, with Carrie V. both 50, Kenneth 23, Evalyn 22, Betty 20, Harmony 18, June 16, Eva 15, and Jay Eugene 13.

1959 Modesto

Mrs. Carrie V. Root was honored on her 71st birthday at a Crane Park picnic attended by her nine children and their families, including 31 grandchildren. Mmes. Harmony E. Cherry and Eva E. Smith planned the event. Present were Messrs, and Mmes. Ivan Root, Oakland; Don Browder, Modesto; Kenneth C. Root, San Jose; Russell Pearce, Santa Rosa; Fred Barnes, Santa Rosa; B. L. Cherry, Turlock; Edward Dwyer, Castro Valley; James Smith, Turlock, and Joy E. Root of Oakland and their families.

John W. Root, born August 7, 1888 in Missouri, died Nov 3, 1982 in Stanislaus County, California, mother's name Gustafson.  Buried in Turlock Cemetery, Lot 499, Block 30.  So is Harmony Elizabeth Cherry - Feb 11, 1922 - Sep 29, 2005.

Carrie Violet Root - July 4, 1888 - June 11, 1962 is buried in Turlock, Lot 500, Block 30.

 

John William Root (son of Peter Root and Anna Greta Gustasfan) was born August 07, 1888 in Cabool, Texas Co., Missouri, and died November 02, 1982 in Turlock, Stanislaus Co., California. He married (1) Jennie Kazup in Turlock, California. He married (2) Carrie Violet Smith on May 27, 1913 in Burlington, Kit Carson Co., Colorado, daughter of Sylvetus Jackson Smith and Luella Priscilla Kennedy.
