Harry S. Stillwagon, son John W. Stillwagon, brother Charles Newton Stillwagon

In 1880  "Henry" S, 18, and Charles N., 12,  are with  parents J.W. 47 and Elizabeth 45 in Fayette County Pennsylvania.

Charles Newton Stillwagon was born 04 June 1867, Broadford PA.  He married Anna Elizabeth Hanna, in 1887 at Broadford, PA, and then moved to a homestead (nothing in BLM records for Stillwagon)  in Kit Carson County, near the pioneer town of Jacqua, CO, northwest of Goodland, Kansas.  Two sons were born during the four years they lived on the homestead; Harry Newton and Wilde Dingle, who died as a young child.

In Decatur County Kansas birth records - Charles was Harry's brother, and died in Kansas in 1895 - buried at Timber Creek in Clay County Kansas. - 1867-Dec 4, 1895.

Obituary From the “Goodland Republic (Kansas) December 6th, 1895

 As the west bound freight No. 41 was leaving Gem Wednesday, Conductor Miller felt the way car strike something, and looking back to see what is might be, was horrified to find the mangled body of a man lying on the track over which the train had just passed.

The train was stopped and the crew went back and picked up the victim, which proved to be the head brakeman, Charles Stillwagon.  The corpse was taken on to Colby and brought in to Goodland on No. 5 yesterday morning.

The dead man leaves a wife and two small children to mourn his loss and fatherly care.

 In January 1890, Mr. Stillwagon met with an accident that caused the loss of the thumb and two first fingers of his right hand while working out of this place, and upon his recovery was given a run as passenger brakeman which he held until August of this year when he again resumed his duties as a freight brakeman, although the mangled hand increased the dangers of his hazardous calling.

On leaving Gem, where they set out a car, Mr Stillwagon closed the switch and caught the way car, and after a few words with his fellow crewmen, he remarked to Brakeman Frank Mixer, “I guess I will quit you,” and passing through the cupula window, started to his post on the head end.  That was the last seen of him alive.

It is supposed that in passing from the box cars onto the coal cars, sandwiched in between, he slipped and fell under the wheels, whose cruel weight crushed out his life.

Died August 13, 1900 at the age of 29 years.  Had remarried May 2, 1899 C.A. Moreland a  Died of Septicaemas  (Colorado records have Charles A. Moreland marrying Annie L. Stillwagon Dec 1, 1898)

Anna Elizabeth HANNA was born Apr 3 1871 in Broad Ford, Fayette, PA. She
died Aug 13 1900 in Basalt, Eagle, CO and was buried in Wakefield, Clay, KS.

In 1900 Fremont County, Colorado a Charles Moreland, born May 1864 in Mississippi, is a railroad fireman.  - one possibility.

And in 1900 Basalt an Annie Moreland, April 1872 Pennsylvania - is widowed, with Thelma Aug 1893 Colorado and Charles June 1896 Kansas.  - almost every household on the page is a railroad worker.

Thelma Stillwagon in 1910 is a boarder with Burhl and Sadie J. Baker in Junction City Kansas.  She's probably the Thelma Bernadine Rowell, Aug 20, 1894- Feb 19, 1970 buried in Moab, Utah.  In 1920 Green River, Utah (a railroad town) she and W.S "Powell" have four kids.Wilbur Rowell is also buried in Moab.

Charles A. Moreland married Catharine A. Smith March 7, 1917.

In 1920 Denver a Charles A. Moreland, 54, Mississippi, is a yardman for a hotel- married to Catherine 51, New York.
 

In 1900 Harry S. Stillwagon, Jan 1862 and Nannie D. May 1864, both Pennsylvania, are in Lansing.  They have Daisy B. March 1883 Pennsylvania and John W. Sept 1885 Kansas. 

Daisy B. Stillwagon married R. Roy Pratt January 27, 1903.

Harry had cash-claimed eighty  acres in Decatur County, Kansas in 1890, and he proved up on 160 acres in 1897 in section 28, 5S 42W.  He bought some land in 1910 from Lydia A. Sleight - in section 33, 5S 42.

Harry also ran for Yuma County coroner in 1908,.

In 1910 Hale Harry and Nannie have Joe A. 8, and nephew Charles E. Stillwagon, 13, born in Kansas. 

Charles moved to Delta, too, registering there, saying he was born June 29, 1896 in Wakefield Kansas, and his father was born in Broadford, Pennsylvania.  He married Blanche A. Myers December 19, 1917.

John W. Stillwagon married Chloie B. Pratt June 2, 1908  (She's probably the sister of  Roy Pratt, who married Daisy.  In 1910 Roy and Daisy in Kit Carson County with Philip 2 and Vernis L. one month - Roy, Daisy, Philip , Bernice, and Nanny 8 are in Delta County in 1920)

John proved up a quarter  in 34 5S 42W in 1914, right on the state line - his was the most southeastern parcel in Yuma County

1914 "A large crowd attended the sale at Harry Stillwagon's place on Sand Creek last week."

He registered for WWI in Delta County, saying he was born September 30, 1885, and was married to Chlole.

In 1917 Miss Stillwagon was a new teacher at the Yuma County High School - History and Latin.  Nellie Stillwagon is the 1918 Language teacher in Wray.

The 1920 census in Delta County has John 34, Chloey 36, Harry 10, George 9, Jessie 7, and Ida 2.

Chloie - Mar 7, 1882 - Feb 15, 1920 is buried in the Cedaredge cemetery.

June 12, 1924 John married Mrs. C.C. Busey  and she and Rex are with John in 1930 and 1940

Carrie C. died Feb 15, 1953, John died Jan 21, 1960 and both are buried in the Cedaredge cemetery

Harry S. 1862-1941 and Nannie D. 1864-1938 are also buried in Cedaredge.

Connellsville, Pennsylvania 1941 "Word has been received of the death of Henry Stillwagon, 70 years and ten months old, a former resident of Broad Ford, at his home in Colorado, where he had been living for many years.  Mr. Stillwagon was born at Broad Ford January 4, 1862, a son of the late John Wesley and Elizabeth Strickler Stillwagon.  He was the fifth child of a family of 12 and is the 11th memeber to die.  A sister, Mrs. Eva Hetzel of Broad Ford, is the only surviving member of the immediate family.  In addition to his sister, Mr. Stillwagon leaves several children.  His wife, Nannie, preceded him in death two years ago"


"Harry Newton Stillwagon was born Oct. 15, 1888, the eldest child of Charles Newton and Anna Elizabeth Hanna Stillwagon.  He was born in a sod house on a homestead in Kit Carson County, Colorado.             He passed away quietly in his sleep March 10, 1975, at the age of 86 years, four months, and 10 days.               His father was killed in a railroad accident when Harry was seven years old and his mother due to illness couldn’t keep the family together.  Harry came to make his home with his uncle, Ed Hanna, near Wakefield.  He attended Timber Creek School near Wakefield.               In Early manhood, he came to the Sutphen Mill community where he worked for Frank Schwab.             On October 30, 1908, he was married to Anna Agnes Swallow in Manhattan.  To this union nine children were born.  They also adopted a baby girl, Catherine.               They farmed in the Sutphen Mill community for several years and then moved to a farm northwest of Chapman.  Where they reared their family.  In 1957 they moved to the Buckeye community where they spent their remaining years.  His wife preceded him in death on May 25, 1963.             He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Busey, Wheat Ridge, Colorado., Mrs. Bernice Lucas, Dothan, Alabama, Mrs. Roseanne Webb, Emporia, Kansas, Mrs. Catherine Zook, Abilene; four sons, Harry, Chapman; Arthur, Demin, New Mexico; Robert, Junction City, Kansas; Vernon, Stratford, Missouri; a brother Charles, Temple City, California,; 40 grand children and 70 great-grandchildren.             He was preceded in death by his wife, his eldest son, Charles, who was killed in a tractor accident two years ago, and Walter, who died in infancy. Dad Stillwagon was loved and respected by all who know him.  In his quiet way, he was an inspiration for his family to remember             Funeral services were held Thursday, March 13, 1975, at the Londeen Chapel in Chapman with the Rev. James Lohmeyer officiating.  Robert Detrich, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. John Meyer, sang “Sweet Hour of Prayer” and “Beyond the Sunset.”             Burial was I Bethel Cemetery, Pallbearers were grandsons, Kenny Lucas, Dale Stillwagon, Edgar Webb, Karl Stillwagon, Harry A Stillwagon, Robert Stillwagon, Rick Stillwagon, Chuck Stillwagon. "

Joseph is single in 1920 San Miguel County -

Joe A. Stillwagon married Myrtle Wiley April 5, 1925

and in 1927 Joseph, a laborer,  and Myrtle are in Eureka, California

Joseph and Myrtis M are in Delta County in 1930, with James D. 3 and Nona M. two months.
