Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:

Edwin D. Slayton

In 1850 Chautauqua, New York, Edwin is one year old.  Parents E. A. 36 and Emily 30.  Siblings are Cary 14, Amasy 12, and Cyrus 2.   Most trees say parents are Ephraim Allen Slayton - 1793-1866 and Emily M. Tippetts 1820-1858.

In 1860 Edwin is with the John C. 38 and Miriam 30 Wells family in Harmony, Chautauqua County.

History of the Slayton Family

EDWIN DEFOREST, b. June 1, 1849; worked on farm in Chau. Co.,
went to Iowa 1869, back 1870; to Onaga, Kans., 1878; back to Pa. for sister, 1879. He went to Decatur Co., 1881, bought tree claim, herded sheep; removed to Colorado. herding, summer '82; sold claim '87; took
homestead claim in Eastern Col., '92, proved up '97; went to Ind. Ter. 1898, farmed, didn't pay, back to Colorado . in fall.

Half-sister EVALINE CLARISSA, b. March 26, 1841; m. 1st, WILLIAM CHAPMAN, 1875; lived Waterford, Pa., where he d. May 18, 1879; two ch. Ida Iney, b. June, 1876; Victor Clyde, b. May 29, 1878;
m. 2nd, MYRUM H. HARDY, March 8, 1880, at Onaga, Pottawatomie Co., Kans.

They went to McDonald Co., Mo., about '82; about 1890 to Echo., Ind. Ter., now at Fairland. One ch. Geo. Ephraim

(1880 census of Pottawatomie County has Myrum Hardy 41, Evaline 39, Ida 4, and Clyde 2)

In 1900 Sebastian County, Arkansas (less than 100 miles from Fairland, Oklahoma) are Myrum Hardy, July 1831 New York, widowed, with son George E. Mar 1881 Kansas.   

George registered for WWI in Mansfield, saying he was born Mar 2, 1881, nearest relative Anna May Hardy of Mansfield.  Anna Hardy 1887-1924 and George 1881-1949 are buried in the Huntington cemetery, Sebastian County.

George Ephraim Hardy, of Mansfield, Sebastian County, married Nancy Buchanan, 25, from LeFlore County, Oklahoma, March 16, 1924.   He registered for WWII in Midland - still Sebastian County, saying he was born in Jay Hawker County Kansas

In 1900 Cherokee Nation Evaline 59 is widowed, with Victor C., 22, farming.

 

Edwin cash-claimed a quarter in Decatur County Kansas July 3, 1890 in 3S 27W

Edwin proved up a quarter  in 27, 5S 42W in 1897

Malissa M. Schutt proved up a quarter in 24, 5S 43W (about six miles away) in 1900.

In 1900 "Edward" D. Slayton, born June 1849 in New York, a farm laborer, is boarding with the James W. Cody family in Lansing precinct.

Melissa M. Schutt married Newton J. Webb March 21, 1895. (Newton J. Webb had divorced Francis E. Webb in 1894 in Yuma County)

1904 "Andrew Johnson was doing some carpenter work for Mr. Ed Slayton last week."  in the Hale section of the Wray paper.

1908 "Edward" Slayton, of Hale, was one of the witnesses for Terry W. Hill proving up land in section 23, 5S 43W.

He might be related to the D.F. Slayton who owned land in 2S 42W in 1922.

In 1915 Sherman County, Kansas E. D. Slayton is 66, New York, with  M.M. Slayton 71, Illinois.

Malissa Melvina Taylor Slayton

Malissa was also married to Warren L Schutt, and they had a daughter named Amelia, who later married William Nelson Stafford. Amelia is buried next to her mother and William is buried in Loveland Colorado. Malissa's last husband was Edward Slayton.

Slayton Obituary
Malissa M. Slayton was born at Stonington, Illinois on January 17, 1844. She was united in marriage to Shult Warner in 1871. Five Children were born. Mr. Warner Died in 1878. She came to Kansas and married E. D. Slayton Jan. 21, 1901. She departed this life April 10, 1917.
Left to mourn her loss, a loving husband, two children and three grandchildren. She was converted in early childhood and lived a consistent Christian until her death.
Funeral services conducted Thursday of last week by the Rev. J. R. Daniels. Internment made in cemetery north of town. 

In 1920 Edwin, 70, born in New York, is in Hale, renting a house, widowed.

In 1923 the Yuma County commissioners paid G.C. Wooley $15 for merchandise furnished Edward Slayton.  They'd done the same in 1922.
