In 1850 Marshall County, Indiana Philemon Shirley is 4, and in 1860 is 14.
In 1870 Marshall County he's 24, married to Jane, 19. Son William's bio in FindAGrave says they were Phillip/Philemon Lowery Shirley and Lydia Jane Sebers/Severs.
Still in Marshall County in 1880, Philemon 37 and Lidda J. 28 Ohio, have Arvillie L. 8, William M. 5, James A. 3, and Ivah F. seven months.
1899 "Chas Shirley moved a frame building onto his claim this week."
Thomas L. Shirley married M.E. McKipick September 27, 1882 in Colorado, and in 1885 there's Thomas 30 and Reecca 27 Shirley in Washington County, Kansas.
Thomas Shirley was one of the four men hauling granite rock for the base of the Beecher Island Monument in 1900.
In 1900 Yuma County Thomas, born Aug 1853 in Ireland, immigrating in 1856, has been married 17 years to Rebecca, May 1856 Canada. They have Herman J. Dec 1886, Mabel M. Dec 1888, Ival e. son Oct 1892, Albert E. Aug 1895, and Thomas H. Dec 1898, all in Kansas.
June 3, 1904 "the W.O.W. Wray Camp extended their sympathy to the beloved wife and family of esteemed neighbor Thomas Shirley." Twenty-two days later J.O. Graham of the W.O.W. delivered $1,000 in life insurance to the widow.
Thomas is in the Yuma cemetery.
February 5, 1905 "The Shirley family leave tonight for Michigan to make their home." Doesn't appear that they are related to the family by Hale.

In 1900 Norton County, on the same page as the Mittan family, P L. Shirley Sept 1846, Lettie July 1851 have been married 31 years, eleven children, six living. Owen July 1875, J.A. Sep 1878, O.D. May 1882, all Indiana, son F.E. Apr 1888 Kansas, and daughter M.A. Nov 1890 Nebraska.
One tree said Lydia Jane Severs Shirley died December 15, 1897 in Norton, Kansas.
September 1900 in the Vernon section "It's 'Grandpa Wales' now, since the arrival at Floyd Shirley's."
1904 "Mr. and Mrs. Shirley and family expect to move away in about two weeks."
1904 "Thomas Shirley and family of Beecher, came to Yuma this week. They moved to the farm of J.W. Sheedy."
Claude cash-claimed a quarter in 6 5S 42W in 1908. Witnesses were Clinton Browning, Harry P. Wiley, Earl Wiley, Lewis V. Cathcart, all of Jaqua, Kansas.
Mostly in section 30, 4S 42W - two miles north of Claude - Wm. M. Shirley proved up a quarter in 1912, Philemon Shirley in 1913, and Owen D. Shirley in 1913. Owen's witnesses were Clinton Browning, Robert Kirkland, both or Armel and Harry P. Wiley and Edward Browning, both of Jaqua, Kansas. Philemon's witnesses were Clinton Browning of Armel, Edward Browning, H.P. Wiley, and Harvey R. Sheldon, all of Jaqua, Kansas.
1914 "Mrs. Owen Shirley closed a very successful term of school in the Browning district Friday."

Philemon is widowed in 1910, living alone in Hale. BUT the Norton cemetery records have a Lydia J. Shirley 1851- 1928. in 1st addition , block 493, space 1.
1910 "School is now in progress in the district south of Armel with Mrs. O. Shirley as teacher."
1916 Lansing news "Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Crothers and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Shirley were Haigler visitors Sunday."
Claud Forest Mittan registered for WWI in Norton, saying he was born Dec 29, 1885. He's in Norton in 1920, living iwth his mother Etta A. 61.
Claud died June 10, 1923, and is buried in Norton.
In 1920 William and Zilpha are in McDonald County, Missouri. Nil is 17, Luella 13, Vergil 11, and Lydia 8, born in Colorado.
In 1930 they're in Benton County, Arkansas, with Luella 24, Virgil 21, and Lyda 19. William and Zelpha are running a restaurant, and Luella, Virgil and Lyda are still with them
In 1940 William and Zelpha are farming in Barry County, Missouri
Zilpha V. Shirley, born July 22, 1878, died October 15, 1968, William July 28, 1875 - Aug 16, 1942, are buried in Barry County Mount Pleasant cemetery. So is Nil, born 1902, died 1996.
Virgil William Shirley Ruby Fay - Inscription: "Married Aug. 25, 1933" - Research Note: He was the son of William M. Shirley and Zilpha Violet Mittan. He was retired from the Ford Agency in Monett and was a Methodist. He married Ruby Faye Highbarger on August 25, 1933, in Butterfield. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Leoma Michael; one brother, Nial Shirley; and two sisters, Luella Russell and Lydia Highbarger.
Lydia Annetta Shirley Highbarger, born Mar 27, 1911, died Oct 30, 1999 in Barry County, Missouri.
One tree says Owen Delbert Shirley was born May 9, 1882 in Phillips County, Kansas, married Myrtle, and died July 17, 1965 in Coffey County, Kansas.
In 1930 Coffey County are Owen, 47, Kansas, Myrtle 41 Nebraska., married eight years. They have Elizabeth 6 and Mabel. E. 7, both Kansas. FindAGrave says May (Holland) Shirley is in an unmarked grave in Glendale Cemetery, Coffey County.
