Funeral services were conducted in Holyoke Saturday afternoon for William Marion Shappell, Holyoke resident, who died Wednesday afternoon in the Colorado General Hospital in Denver, where he had been a patient several weeks.
Death was due to cancer of the lip, an ailment with which he had been afflicted several months. He was 64 years, 10 months and 12 days old.
Rev. William Pepper, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted the service at the Colver Brothers Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock. Mrs. A.W. McFadden sang two song, "Oh, Happy Day" and "Rock of Ages" with Mrs. W.S. Young playing the accompaniment. Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery.
Serving as the pallbearers were William P. Schulz, Ed Brandes, Dave Masten, A.R. Church, Rufus Dike and C.V. Mills.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Williams and children and Mrs. John Sievers of Norton, Kansas, Mrs. Ruth Shappell and children of Laird, and Mrs. Esther Black, Mrs. May Dickson and Donald Tupper of North Platte, Nebraska.
Deceased was born July 12, 1874 at Knoxville in Marion County, Iowa. When he was five years old, he moved with his parents to Minden County in Nebraska, and lived there until 17 years ago, when he and his family located in Phillips County. He was married to Miss Matilda Holmberg at Kearney, Nebraska March 15, 1897. He affiliated with the United Brethren church when he was 19 years old, and remained a member of that religious order throughout the remainder of his life.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Matilda Shappell, of Holyoke; one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Williams of Norton, Kansas; six grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Bernadina Nelson of Orleans, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by two sons, a daughter and four brothers and sisters.
"Mrs. Matilda Shappell, a resident of Wray for the past
eight years, seven of which were spent as a patient at Edith's
Rest Home, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 1955 at the age of 83 years,
10 months and 14 days.
She was born on November 27, 1871, in Illinois.
Her maiden name was Homberg. She was married to William
Shappell at Kearney, Neb., in 1897.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Ruth Shappell of Wray; two sisters, Mrs. May Dickson
and Mrs. Hattie Smith, both of North Platte, Neb.,
and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene conducted by Rev. Laurence Gifford. Burial will be at Holyoke, which was her former home."

"Funeral services were conducted at the Church of the Nazarene Thursday afternoon for Clarence Mahlon Shappell, farmer of Yuma county, who ended his life by shooting early Tuesday morning, June 14, 1938.
The final rites were held at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. R. Worthy Babcock, officiating. Two hymns were sung by Edward Lutze with Mrs. Fred Lutze playing the accompaniments.
Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. The pallbearers were Arthur Groseclose, Ed Rowe, William Hays, Ronnie Veal, Otto Krautschun and Rev. Paul Mendel.

"Goodland, Kansas resident Ida Thomas, 84, died Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 1, 1928, at Holyoke, Colorado, the daughter of Ruth Elizabeth (Enyeart) and Mahlon C. Shappell. She attended country school, which was located between Holyoke and Wray.
She had been a resident of Idalia, Colorado, before moving to Goodland seven years ago. In Idalia, she attended St. John's United Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents, son Arthur Weaver, and brother Raymond Shappell.
Surviving family includes daughter Sharon Lightle and her husband Elmer of Goodland; grandson Darren Lightle and his wife Marie of West Monroe, Louisiana; two granddaughters Kim Osborn and her husband Mitch of North Platte, Nebraska; Alecia Adams of Oceanside, California; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister Belva Olson of Haigler, Nebraska.
The funeral will be Friday, April 5, at 10:00 AM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland, with burial to follow in the Lucas Cemetery in Idalia, Colorado.
Friends may share their respects at Koons Chapel on Thursday, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM MT."
December 1953 "Mrs. Wm. R. Shappell, the former Marlene Fox who is still a polio victim, has been transferred to St. Luke’s hospital, room 200D in Denver. Her mother, Mrs. Roy Fox, says she is getting along fine, but slow. Cards and letters will make her very happy."
August 20, 1959 "William R. Shappell, 28, of 1456 S. Mariposa St.,
Denver, was killed in a one-car accident on a state highway in
Jefferson county Sunday night, according to Denver newspaper
stories. Shappell, who is a son of Mrs. Ruth Shappell of Wray,
attended school here and is widely known in the Wray community.
His wife is the former Marlene Fox of Laird. It is reported here
that Shappell had attended a picnic for former residents of this area on Sunday and was returning home when the accident happened. Newspaper stories said the car he was driving went out of control and crashed 1.4 miles west of Idledale. The victim's head was pinned in the right front door of the car and he was dead when officers arrived at the scene. The funeral services were held in Denver.

December 1950 "Miss Belva Shappell, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Shappell of Wray,
became the bride of Clifford E. Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Olson of Wray and Haigler,
at a pretty wedding at the Nazarene church in Wray on Sunday afternoon, December 10.
The double ring ceremony was performed at two o'clock by Rev. John Grauberger.
Baskets of pastel colored mums decorated the church and the candles were lighted
by Miss Willmenia Olson, sister of the grocm. Miss Arlene Richards, accompanied
by Mrs. Leo Pickett, sang 'I Love You Truly' and 'Because'.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, Raymond Shappell, wore a pretty white wedding
gown of marquisette fashioned with a square neckline and lace inserts in the full skirt. Mrs. Walter Boyes was maid of honor and Miss Bonnie Johnson was
bridesmaid. The groom was attended by Raymond Woods as best man and Carl Peterson was usher.
The reception immediately afterward was at the Olsen home on Blake street.
When the couple return from their honey moon trip they will make their home on the
Olson ranch north of Haigler where the groom has been farming since his graduation from the
Haigler high school. The bride graduated last year from the Wray high school and
has more recently been employed at the Duckwall store in Wray.
Out-of-town guests at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Williams, Gerald Lee and Owen of Norton, Kans.,
Mrs. Eze Calkins of Portland, Ore., an aunt of the bride, and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Iske of Ashland, Nebr., cousins of the groom."

Belva Eileen (Shappell) Olson was born April 1st, 1932 in Haxtun, Colorado to Clarence (Whitey) M. and Elizabeth Ruth (Enyeart) Shappell. She entered into the presence of the Lord on Friday, June 8th, 2018 at Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman, NE at the age of 86 years of age.
Belva had schooling in her younger years in Laird Colorado. She later attended high school in Wray Colorado where she was active in Future Homemakers of America and graduated with the class of 1950. Shortly after graduation on December 10, 1950, Belva was united in marriage to Clifford Emil Olson in Wray, Colorado and they moved to his family’s farm north of Haigler where they had four sons, Mike, Scott, Jeff and Steve, along with an infant daughter Patty that died at 4 months of age. Belva lived on the Olson homestead for over 66 years.
As a farmer and ranchers wife, Belva was homemaker who worked hard to raise four boys, and cooked lunch daily for the family and hired help up until a few years ago. While her boys were in high school, she could be found cheering them on in all their sporting events. Belva and Clifford were big Husker football fans and traveled to many of the games in Lincoln along with road tripping to a few bowl games. They also enjoyed camping at Enders Lake in their RV and golfing in their spare time. Belva was a member of the Red Hatters and extension club. Belva enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and hosting/cooking for big family holiday gatherings.
Preceding her in death was her husband Clifford Emil Olson and infant daughter Patty; parents Clarence and Elizabeth Ruth Shappell; sister Ida (Shappell) Thompson; brother Raymond Shappell; sister-in-law Willmenia (Olson) Courtney and Marlene (Shappell) Bear; nephews, Bill Courtney and Arthur Weaver.
Survivors include four sons, Mike (Linda) Olson, and their children Wade (Alexa) Olson and Gena; Scott (Rhonda) Olson and their children Jennifer (Marc) Brown, Joe, Tracy (Matt) Conner, Brooke; Jeff Olson and children Jacilyn (Greg) Bryant, Jocelyn (Alex) Ryan; Steve (Steph) Olson and their children Tony, Matthew, Jessica and Trevor. Brother in-law Jim Courtney of Laird, Colorado; niece Sharon Lightle; nephews Vern Shappell, Bill Shappell, Bruce Courtney, Jim Courtney, and Bob Courtney; and 14 great-grandchildren, along numerous other relatives, friends and neighbors.
A visitation was held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, 10:00 a.m. at the Haigler United Methodist Church in Haigler, Nebraska with Pastor Gary Fisher officiating.
Interment will be held in the Haigler Cemetery in Haigler, Nebraska, In lieu of usual remembrances memorials may be given in her name to the Haigler United Methodist Church. Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
