Earnest A. and Maud (Calkins) Day, 5 North 43 West


Earnest proved up 320 acres in section 19, 5N 43W and section 24, 5N 44W in 1919.

February 1923 "The new school house in District No. 32 in Yuma county was completed last week and turned over to the school board. School was begun in the new building Monday morning. The new school is very commodious, the building being erected so that in the future two teachers may be employed. A full basement containing a pipeless furnace which will heat the building. A bond issue of $3,000 was made last summer for the purpose of erecting the building. The directors in charge were George Wheatley, A. T. O'Connor and E. A. Day. The new school house is located as nearly as possible in the center of the district. The district covers a large territory and the present location of the school house practically makes a centralized school. Holyoke Enterprise ."

June 1932 "Mr. and Mrs. Roy Keech and family and E. A. Day and daughters Velma and Veva and son Laverne and Harold Speicher were Sunday dinner guests at the M. D. Lockwood home."

June 1942 " Mr. and Mrs. Burl Lockwood and family and E. A. Day and son LaVeme visited Granddaddy Calkins at the Wray hospital Sunday. We are glad to hear that he is some better at this writing. Mrs. Maud Day is staying in Wray to be near his bedside."

Ernest A. Day was born Feb. 11, 1889 in Chase County, Nebr., and departed this life Oct. 31, 1947, at the Colorado General Hospital, Denver, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 20 days.
He was the youngest child of Eliza and Alex Day of Chase County, Nebr. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Allen and William; two sisters, Stella and Bertha.
He was united in marriage to Maud Calkins Oct. 13, 1910 at Holyoke and moved to a farm southwest of Champion where they made their home until the spring of 1917 when they moved to Yuma County, their present home.
To this union four children were born: Velma, Veva, Vivian and LaVern. Early in boyhood Mr. Day became an active member of the Mennonite Brethern Church. He was always ready and willing to help those in need, sickness or sorrow and was recognized by those caring for him during his last illness as a man who loved the Lord. He was a good neighbor and a true friend.
Surviving are his wife Maud Day, his four children, Mrs. Harold Speicher of Holyoke, Mrs. Burl Lockwood of Holyoke, Mrs. Walter Cope of Fruitland, Idaho, La Vern Day of Holyoke; eleven grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman Day of Sacramento, Calif., and Louis Day, Fairfield, Nebr.; one sister, Mrs. Maddie Ferguson of Seattle, Washington and other relatives.

Maude Beatrice Keech Day Greenlawn Cemetery Lamar, Chase County, Nebraska, PLOT B30-W4 MEMORIAL ID 35174589

"Funeral services were held at the Church of the Nazarene in Wray at 10 o'clock Monday morning for Maud Day Keech who died July 3, 1951 at the Cedardalc Nursing Home at Wray at the age of 74 years, one month and nine days. Garfield Dickson was the minister. The body was taken to the Mt. Tabor cemetery at Isnur, Nebraska for interment service.
The former Maud Beatrice Calkins, daughter of Ruth and Nathaniel Calkins, was born May 24, 1889, at Geneva, Neb. She was preceded in death by a sister and is survived by two brothers.
When she was five years old, following the death of her mother, she moved with her grandparents to Chase County, Neb., where she spent her girlhood.
She was married to Ernest Day of Chase County on October 13, 1910 and they made their home near Champion, Neb., for about seven years. Then they moved to northeastern Yuma county in March of 1917. Mr. Day died in 1947 and Mrs. Day moved to Holyoke.
On February 22, 1951, she was married to LeRoy Keech of Wray. They made their home at Holyoke until she came to the nursing home at Wray. She was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Keech is survived by her husband, Roy Keech; two brothers, J. E. Calkins of Pomona, Calif. and Louis Calkins of Hyannis, Nebraska, four children, Mrs. Velma Speicher of Idalia, Mrs. Veva Lockwood of Denver. Mrs. Vivina Cole of McCall, Idaho, and Rev. Vern Day of Yukon, Okla.; twenty grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren."

"Funeral services for Mrs. Leroy J. Keech, a resident of this locality since 1916 who died Saturday afternoon, were held Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. Interment was at Palisade, Nebraska, where the lady had lived before coming to Colorado.
Sarah Daisy Sholes waa born near Valparaiso, Indiana, March 14, 1882, and passed away at her home at Wray, Saturday, April 27, 1946 at the age of 64 years, one month and 13 days. She became a member at the Baptist Church at Boulder, Colorado, at a young age, later joining the Church of Christ at Palisade Nebraska, to which she was a faithful member, always doing her part.
She was the youngest at five children, born to Bill M. and Mary Sholes. All preceded her in death, but one sister. In 1886 her father and two sisters moved to Clay County, Nebraska and in 1899 they moved to Boulder, Colorado.
In 1909 she was married to Leroy J. Keech at Palisade. To this union five children were born: Cecil Laurence of San Diego; Laura Ametta who died in infancy; Bernice Drudlla Deterta at Wray; Vera Mae Whitney at Denver; and LeRoy Everett of Wray.
In 1916 the family came to Colorado to homestead in northern Yuma County where they lived a happy life and endured all hardships together. In the spring of 1946 they moved to their present home in Wray.
She leaves to mourn their loss besides her husband and children; one sister, Mrs. Eunice Carder of Lake Valley, New Mexico; three granddaughters, Daisy Vivian Keech, Darlene Joyce and Shirley Agnes Speicher, and one grandson, Wayne Everett Speicher. Two grandsons preceded her in death. She was a loving mother and kind to all, never falling to lend a helping hand in time at need."

VELMA

January 1951 " Mrs. Speicher and baby were moved from the hospital to the home of her mother, Mrs. Maud Day, on Christmas Day. "

VIVIAL

"Vivian Cole, age 90, of Boise, passed away at home on November 17, 2009. A celebration of her life will be held at the Glenbrier Court Recreation Hall, Boise,on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
Vivian was born September 3, 1919 at Holyoke, Colorado to Ernest and Maud Calkins Day. She was the third of four children and is survived by one sister, Veva Lockwood of Holyoke, Colo. Vivian met Walter W. Cole in Fruitland, Idaho on August 4, 1938. They married ten days later on August 14, 1938. They enjoyed 48 years together.
Walter passed away in September 1986. Vivian and Walter lived in Fruitland until 1949 when they moved to McCall. In 1965 they moved to Meridian, Idaho, later moving to Boise in the late 1970s. Vivian and Walter both worked for Intermountain Gas Company until they retired.
Vivian was preceded in death by Walter; a sister Velma Spiecher of Colorado; her brother LaVerne of Oklahoma; her daughter-in-law Sharon Cole of Boise; and by several nieces and nephews. Vivian is survived by her seven children, Vera (Larry) Riser, Bend, Oregon; Edwin (Carol) Cole of Boise; Fay (Ben) McDonald of Anadarko, Okla.; Wayne (Barbara) Cole, of Boise; Dean (Cindy) Cole of Eagle; Dennis (Tina) Cole of Boise; Vickie (Everett) Moench of Boise; and by 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Life's Doors Hospice for their kind and gentle care of Vivian during her final weeks. We would also like to thank her dear friend and neighbor Renee Bryan who took very good care of Vivian and her little dog Buddy; and her friend Stacy Hazard who watched out for her."

VERN

On the evening of Feb. 14, 1947, at the Pilgrim Holiness church at Colorado Springs occurred the marriage of Vonagene Quinn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Quinn of Colorado Springs, to La Vern Day, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Day of Holyoke. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Glenn Griffith, assisted by Rev. Myers.
Barbara Frase played Lohengrin's wedding march. Rev. Clare Elkins and Ray Winter sang "O Promise Me" and "God Gave Me You." The bride was given in marriage by her father. Her sister, Mrs. Wayne States, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were the Misses Mary Alice Whisenand and Winona Snowbarger. Candlelighters were Jean Quinn, cousin of the bride, and Gladys Henry. Ruth Lockwood, small niece of the groom and Venita Frase were flower girls. Ernest Lockwood, nephew of the groom, was train bearer. Bernard Walchle, 1ifelong friend of the groom was best man. Other attendants of the groom were Marvin Bnowberger and Manuel Davenport. Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Wayne States. There were about fifty guests. A beautiful 3 tiered wedding cake was cut by the bride and groom and served with ice cream to the guests.
Mr. and Mrs. Day are at present at the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Day. "

" LaVern S. Day, 56, died Sunday, April 8, 1984, at his home in Hot Springs AR. Born at Holyoke Colorado. Pastored Nazarene churches at Anadarko, Sayre & Yukon Oklahoma. Survived by a son, Dale of Golden Colorado; sisters, Veva Lockwood, Hot Springs, Velma Speicher, Wray Colorado, and Vivian Cole, Boise Idaho; 2 grandchildren. Services Thursday, April 12, First Nazarene Church, Hot Springs Arkansas. "
