daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Damewood of this county
and has not resided in the county long enough to make
many acquaintances but is highly spoken of by all who
have met her. Ed Mathers is one of the enterprising
young farmers of the county and is highly respected by
all who know him. It was a quiet wedding,
only relatives being present, and Mrs. F. A. Damewood
of Nebraska City, grand-mother of the bride, was the

"At Clarinda Methodist church Saturday afternoon was held the final rites for F.[rancis] A. [sbury] Damewood, following funeral services the same morning from the Methodist church in Lincoln, he having passed away at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, where he was taken from the Lindell hotel where he had been making his home.
Mr. Damewood was 85 years, 9 months and 22 days of age at the time of death, which occurred June 4th. The funeral cortege motored here from Lincoln, going directly to the Methodist church, where the pastor, Dr. D. J. Shenton conducted the services, the funeral being attended by many who had known the deceased man when he lived here, and with whom he had kept up a constant acquaintance and friendship through coming here frequently, being careful to call on his friends when he came. Music was furnished by a male quartet, composed of Tom Tomlinson, Roscoe Applegate, Walter Cramer and Rudolph Swanson, with Margaret Tomlinson at the pipe organ. In accordance with Mr. Damewood's request, sons of veterans acted as pallbearers, Fred Fisher, Ed Klise, Homer Woods, Stanley Glasgow, Gerald G. Graff and J. B. M. Pruitt.
Three things are outstanding in Mr. Damewood's career that he was a Methodist, a Civil War veteran, and a mail clerk during his active working years.
Being a Methodist started when he was named, his middle name being Asbury, after the noted preacher, whose fame was great at the time Mr. Damewood was born, Aug. 12, 1845, at Knoxville, Tenn., his father's name being Isaac Damewood.
The family moved to Page County, Iowa, resident in Hawleyville, where opening of the Civil War witnessed the enlisting in the Union cause of F. A. Damewood, age only 14, but large for his age. He joined Co. A, 4th Ia. cavalry, of which the captain was a presiding elder of the Methodist church, the two other officers of the company, to start with, being Methodist preachers. The boy, F. A., and his folks, thought it would be all right to join a company officered that way, so he went through the war of active service while still under age.
Returning home, he acted as deputy sheriff under his father, who for eight years was sheriff of Page County. Later the young man was deputy under his father's successor, Sheriff Mahlon Johnson.
He then entered the railway mail service at the age of probably 36 years, having the run at first between Villisca and St. Joseph, then east and west on what was then the H & S (Humeston and Shenandoah), then was transferred to Council Bluffs for the mail run eastward; then had a run for a time out of Lincoln, and finally was handling mail between Red Oak and Nebraska City when retired.
Mr. Damewood has three brothers and two sisters living,
U. G. Damewood of Clarinda, E. C. Damewood of Coin, and
W. A. Damewood of Denver, Mrs. J. W. Hoskins of Clarinda and
Mrs. M. E. Riggles of Laurel, Neb. Three sons are living,
Ivan at Lincoln,
Emmett who recently moved to Oregon but was here for the funeral services,
and the third son, Charles E. Damewood, near Yuma, Calif (Should be Colorado). After an extremely active life, he was laid to rest beside the grave of his wife in the Clarinda cemetery.
In recent years Mr. Damewood has been active as commander of the G. A. R. of Nebraska, having an office in Lincoln. He attended the recent annual encampment of Nebraska veterans, taking great interest and pride in the work of the Grand Army of the Republi"

April 1915 "Chas. E. Damewood, representative of Phillips and Yuma counties in the lower house of the Silly Twentieth legislature, will be cited to appear before the juvenile court and show cause why he should not be punished for contempt, according to a statement made by Judge Ben B. Lindsey the first of the week.
Judge Lindsey bases his decision to proceed against Damewood upon certain statements alleged to have been made by the representative to Gustave Anderson, proprietor of the Silver State laundry, regarding the case of a young girl which occupied the attention of the juvenile court about three years ago.
Damewood will be ordered to appear and if he should fail to come voluntarily, he will be placed under arrest.
The particular case which has landed Damewood in hot water concerns a girl until very recently a ward of the House of the Good Shepherd. Damewood, according to Anderson, stated publicly that he had talked to the girl and her mother and had learned from them that the girl had been sent to the House of the Good Shepherd without any cause and that Juvenile Officer Phillips had told the mother that she could not get her daughter out of the institution unless she paid him (Phillips) the sum of $75.
Damewood, Anderson informed Judge Lindsey, said he had been favorably
disposed toward the juvenile court until he by personal investigation had learn-ed the truth of these charges. Immediately upon hearing of Damewood's statement, Judge Lindsey sent for the girl and her mother. Both denied positively ever having talked with Damewood. Regarding the girl's commitment, the mother declared that the daughter had been placed in the institution at her request, and that she had been kept there because she did not have a place for her. She also informed the judge that she had never spoken to Phillips about getting the girl out, but that she had obtained her release without any trouble whatever last February when she decided to take her daughter back to her home. Further investigation disclosed that the girl had been regularly committed by Judge Harry. S. Class, the county judge of Adams county, at the time substituting for Judge Lindsey. I am getting tired of these slanderous remarks being circulated about me and the Juvenile court, said Judge Lindsey. For that reason I have determined to proceed against Damewood and all others who are spreading falsehoods about the court. The work of the court is jeopardised by these contemptible lies. I have stood this business for years, but I am not going to tolerate it any longer. Damewood called upon Judge Lindsey several times during the session of the legislature and assured him of his hearty support, expressing regret that he was compelled to vote for the Sabin anti-Lindsey bills because he was bound by a caucus agreement—Denver Post."
