August H. Banaka, 59, a resident of Colorado for 25 years, ended his life Friday morning, February 27, 1942, when he fired a bullet from a .25-.20 calibre rifle thru his heart as he sat on the side of his bed at his farm home, near the Phillips county line, northwest of Alvin. Despondency over family troubles was indicated in two notes which he wrote before ending his life. One of the notes was addressed to his wife, and the other to his children. Mrs. Belle Banaka, the widow, and Mrs. Wilma Banaka, daughter-in-law of the deceased, whose husband, Kenneth, is now in army service, were in the house and heard the report of the gun from Mr. Banaka's bedroom at 7 o'clock Friday morning. They rushed to the room and discovered the tragedy. Death had apparently been instantaneous. The county coroner from Phillips county was at first summoned, but when he discovered that the incident had happened in this county, he notified Deputy Coroner Phil Lockwood, Sheriff Raymond Van Horn and Undersheriff Ernest Price who went to the Banaka place and investigated the tragedy. After questioning members of the family and reading the notes left by Mr. Banaka, the officers decided no inquest was necessary.
The remains were taken to Holyoke for funeral services and burial. The services were held Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was born April 28, 1882, in Jackson County, Kansas, and came to this vicinity twenty-five years ago. Two of his sons, Kenneth and Harold, were inducted into the army on February 9. Other children are Leslie, Sam who lives on the west coast, Mrs. Alta Winters and Margie, who live in Washington, Mrs. Ethel Jones of Kimball, Nebraska, Walter and Donnie who live at home.
Mr. Banaka was highly respected by the people of his community, and news of his death was a great shock to his friends and acquaintances."
