August 1923 "Mr. and Mrs. August Banaka spent ..day at the Will Banaka home.
" ...sisters of the Banaka boys, of Kansas, are visiting here. "
" On Monday March 10th, 1924, August Banaka will sell at his farm 18
miles southeast of Holyoke, 10 head of horses, 39 head of cattle,
10 head of hogs, some poultry, his machinery, and some household goods.
Sale to start at 11 o'clock, with a free lunch at noon."
April 1931 " Mrs. August Banaka and son Leslie and daughter Ethel and
George Walcott left for Kansas City Mo., Monday. Mr. Walcott is returning home
after spending the winter with his uncles, Mat and Buck Walcott. Mrs. Banaka is going to visit her mother."
February 1933 " Mrs. August Banaka left Thursday evening for Netawaukee, Kan., to attend the funeral of her father, Sam Thomas."
April 1933 "Miss Jennie Oman and brother, Herbert, gave a party to their
friends Saturday evening. Those present were the Misses Erma and Ula Ranum,
Haziel Irvine, Ollie Fincher, Thelma Banaka, Anna Oman, Clara Likens,
Sylvia Fincher, and Howard Fuller, Harvey Nichols, Jesse Lewis, Charley Williams,
Paul Fincher, Pat Ethridge and Harold Banaka.
Lunch was served by the hostess and all I left at a late hour reporting a
wonderful time. " (Jennie was my mother, Herbert an uncle, and Annie an aunt.)
" Harold Banaka spent the week end with his teacher, Miss Anna Oman. "
September 1936 " Miss Ethel Banaka visited with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. August Banaka northeast of Wray, over the week end.
Miss Banaka is employed in Wray at the City Cafe."
August H. Banaka, 59, a resident of Colorado for 25 years,
ended his life Friday morning, February 27, 1942,
when he fired a bullet from a .25-.20 calibre rifle thru his heart as he sat
on the side of his bed at his farm home, near the Phillips county line,
northwest of Alvin. Despondency over family troubles was indicated in
two notes which he wrote before ending his life. One of the notes
was addressed to his wife, and the other to his children.
Mrs. Belle Banaka, the widow, and Mrs. Wilma Banaka, daughter-in-law of
the deceased, whose husband, Kenneth, is now in army service,
were in the house and heard the report of the gun from Mr. Banaka's bedroom
at 7 o'clock Friday morning. They rushed to the room and discovered the tragedy.
Death had apparently been instantaneous. The county coroner from Phillips
county was at first summoned, but when he discovered that the incident
had happened in this county, he notified Deputy Coroner Phil Lockwood,
Sheriff Raymond Van Horn and Undersheriff Ernest Price who went to the
Banaka place and investigated the tragedy. After questioning members of
the family and reading the notes left by Mr. Banaka,
the officers decided no inquest was necessary.
The remains were taken to Holyoke for funeral services and burial.
The services were held Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was born April 28, 1882, in Jackson County, Kansas,
and came to this vicinity twenty-five years ago.
Two of his sons, Kenneth and Harold, were inducted into the
army on February 9. Other children are Leslie, Sam who lives on the
west coast, Mrs. Alta Winters and Margie, who live in Washington,
Mrs. Ethel Jones of Kimball, Nebraska, Walter and Donnie who live at home.
Mr. Banaka was highly respected by the people of his community, and news of
his death was a great shock to his friends and acquaintances."
MEMORIAL ID 82846185.
January 1944 " In calling to have the paper sent to her son
Pfc. Harold Banaka, who is in Australia, Mrs. August Banaka remarked that she
also had three other sons in the service of their country:
Pvt. Kenneth Banaka of near London, Pvt. Sam Banaka of Camp Gruber, Oklahoma
and Pfc. Leslie Banaka who returned to Camp Forrest, Tennessee, last week after
spending a furlough at his home north of town. "
