John and Frances Nickolaus, sons Frank, Martin, and Andrew, Pleasant Valley

In 1910 Magee precinct, Yuma County, Colorado, John Nicklous is 60, married 38 years to Frances, 56, both born in Russia German.  She's had eleven kids. six living.  With them are Frank 23 and Andrew 20.  All immigrated in 1899.

John proved up two quarters in 13 and 14, 4N 47W in 1913, witnesses Fredrick F. Bitterman, Anton Trunde, John A. Lett, and Joseph Gisi.

In 1920 Yuma John and Francis Nicklous are living on Weld Avenue, both immigrating in 1900, naturalized in 1902, with Yiddish as native language.

In 1930 Mason County Washington, Andrew is 32, widowed.  His father John 81 and mother Francis 79 are with him.  So is Irene 16, Ada 15, Andrew 8, and Francis 2.


Thanks to Ann Nicklous Westlund (McMinnville, Oregon) (daughter of Frank and Arlene Nicklous, Newberg, Oregon), who writes " Clara Cook (Newberg, Oregon) said John and Frances Nicklous are buried (Yuma County) at the Catholic cemetery in St. Paul, Oregon. (John - 1846-1934 and Frances 1849-1936 "Nicklaus" # 32455982 are in FindaGrave) My cousin Gary Robert Nicklous, who died in a auto accident when he was 15, is also buried there. He was the son of George and Gwen Nicklous, St Helens, Oregon. They have a daughter Georgina."

ANDREW

Andrew Nickolous married Lena Schlegel January 10, 1913, recorded in Yuma County.

In 1920 "east and west road Twp 3 North" Andrew is 29, born in Russia, married to Lena M., 24, Colorado, with Irene 7, and Ada 6.

The households preceding are Anton Schlegel 62, single, his brother Joe V. 64, sister Mary 56, nephew John 33 - all born in Switzerland.  Then Jake Schlagel 64, his wife Mary P, 52, both immigrating in 1890, naturalized in 1910.

Nickolaus, Andrew, Farmer, PO Yuma, came to Yuma County 1906, Born Russia 1898, married Lena Schlegel, three children.

One Ancestry tree said Lena died Dec 22, 1927 in Haxtun, and Andrew died Dec 30, 1977 in Thurston County, Washington.

In 1930 Mason County Washington, Andrew is 32, widowed.  His father John 81 and mother Francis 79 are with him.  So is Irene 16, Ada 15, Andrew 8, and Francis 2.

The Andrew Nicklaus that # 32455947 has in Saint Paul cemetery dying January 4, 1978 does not have a birth date.

Irene Lena Nickolaus married John Clarence Bennett.  Washington death index has her death in Olympia, residence Lacey,  Feb 4, 1996.

In 1940 Pierce County, Washington, John Bennett is a tool checker,  34, with Irene 27, Colorado.  They have Rodger 7 and Delores 5.  Also with them is Frank Nickolaus (Irene's cousin), 26, born in Colorado, Andrew 19, Irene's brother, born in Colorado, and her sister Frances, 12, Colorado.

41413212 John C. Bennett 1905-1990 is buried in Lacey, Thurston County, Washington.

FRANK

Nickolaus, Frank, Farmer, PO Yuma, came to Yuma County 1906, Born Russia 1887, married Mary Kunz, four children.

In 1910 Yuma County, John and Katherine Kunz both 49, born in Switzerland, have been married 27 years, with Mary, 23, all immigrating in 1890.  They're on the same census page as Antone Schlegel.

Mary Kunz married Frank Nickolous January 11, 1911, recorded in Yuma County.

 Frank was a witness in 1912 for the claim of John Kunz for land in 21, 3 47W.

 

April 18, 1913 "Frank and Martin Nickolaus were down to Wray Monday and Tuesday, taking out their naturalization papers."

April 25 "David Donaldson, Jr., of Eckley, a native of Scotland, Martin Nickolous and Frank Nickolous, of Yuma, natives of Russia; Alois Landtwig, of Yuma, a native of Scotland; William Brochardt and Edward Linzert, of Yuma, natives of Germany; William D. Pritchard, of Yuma, a native of England, and Con McCoale, of Happyville, a native of Ireland, were those who received their final papers of naturalization at Wray last week."

Frank registered for WWI in Yuma, and the typed card said he was born February 14, 1918 in Russia, relative Mary Nickolaus.

In 1920 Yuma County "on the east-west road in township 3 North", Frank Nichalaus is 33, born in Russia, with Mary 33 Switzerland.  They have Joseph 8, Frank 6, Katherine M. 3, and Paul 1, all four born in Colorado.  That must have been about when this photograph was taken.

In 1930 Yuma County, Frank and "Marsey", both 42, have Joe L. 18, Frank A. 15, Catherine M. 13, Paul A. 10, Clara M. 8, and Helen 7.

In 1940 Yuma County, Frank is farming, with A. Mary, 53, Katherine M. 23, and Clara M. 18.

Frank 1886-1947 #  74074097 and Anna Mary Nickolaus 1885-1970 # 74074179 are buried in Yuma.

Joseph L. Nickolaus married Ruby E. Crabtree, and they're in north Yuma County in 1940, with Ruth A. 4.  Ruth's parents H. Elmer 58 and Edna Crabtree 57 are with them.

Joseph L. Nickolaus 1911-1995 is buried in Eckley.  53151212

Paul A. Nickolaus 1918-1962 is buried in Yuma.

Helen C. married Paul D., and they're buried in Vernon Glendale cemetery # 118568077

  Catherine is buried in Yuma, too # 49577230


In 1955 Mrs. Mary Nickolaus' Easter guests were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nickolaus of Denver and the Paul and Lillie Haywood families.

MARTIN

In 1900 Julia Mattice, born April 1881 in Austria, is a servant in the household of Morris Orum, running a hotel in Yuma.

Martin Nickolaus, 24 married Julia Mathis, 22, in Greeley, Colorado February 3, 1904, recorded in Weld County.  Performed by Andrew P. Casey, Catholic priest.

 Mrs. Martin Nicolous died Monday night at the family residence, 13 miles north of Yuma, after an illness of nearly a year, aged 31 years. The funeral was held Wednesday from the Catholic Church, Rev. Father Juily officiating, and the interment was at the Yuma Cemetery. In 1922 Martin Nickolaus was delinquent on taxes for land in 23, 1N 47W.


In 1930 Yamhill County, Oregon, Martin is  doing odd jobs,  50, Agatha M. 31, with Eva ??, William 17, Frank R. 16, Rose M. 14, Harold 9, and George 6, all kids born in Colorado.

In 1940 Yamhill County Oregon, Martin is 62, Agatha 40, both born in Russia, with William 26, Harold 20, -both working in a wood yard - George 15 - these three born in Colorado, Martin Jr. 7, Oregon

Martin "Necklius" registered for WWII in Newberg, Yamhill County, born Oct 15, 1878 in Odessa, Russia.

The person who would always know his address was Anton Trunde of Newberg.  Antone Trunde was in Yuma County in 1910, born about 1884 in Russia, married to Theckla, 26.  His parents Lucas 78 and Annie 73 are with them.

   

Findagrave 32455997 has Martin  born 1878, dying 1953 in Yamhill County, buried in Saint Paul's, Marion County, Oregon.

William John Nicklous  (December 18, 1912 - August 26, 1995)
Sweet Home - William John Nicklous, 82, of Sweet Home, died Saturday at his home.

He was born December 18, 1912 in Yuma, Colorado, the son of Martin and Julia Nicklous, and his mother died when he was a baby.

He married Reba Gillmouthe on on December 14, 1940, and they moved to Sweet Home in 1949.

Mr. Nicklous had worked for South Fork Lumber Co., McKay Logging, for 16 years for Willamette Industries and for Cascade Handle. He retired at age 62.

Surviving are wife Reba Nicklous of Sweet Home; sons Craig Nicklous of Lebanon, Randy Nicklous of Sweet Home and Michael Nicklous of Washington; daughters Terri Larsen of Corvallis, Karen Davis of Middletown, California, and Sherilyn Willingham of Albany; brothers Frank Nicklous and Martin Nicklous "Babes" both of Newberg, and George Nicklous of St. Helens; and sister Rose Van Damme of Tillamook. There are eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
