John and James A. McConnell, Pleasant Valley

John cash-claimed a quarter in 22, 4N 47W in 1908, and James one in 23, also 1908.  Witnesses for both were Henry F. Schmale, Robert Eyestone, Edwin B. Cabeen, and Martin Gise (probably Gisi), all of Yuma.

January 10, 1908 Yuma Pioneer "James and John McConnell made final proof on their homesteads this morning."

In 1910 J.A. McConnell was delinquent in taxes for land in section 23.

In 1880 Bent County, James McConnell 19, is a railroad section hand.

But that's probably not ours - in 1880 St. Lawrence County, NY, Hugh McCOnell is 51, Emily 50, Jennie V. 23, James A> 19, Hariet Ann 17, Fanny C. 15, Vincia E. 12, Hugh E. 10, and Myron S. 7.

In 1885 Arapahoe County, Colorado, Wm.  H.? McConnell 30  and brother James A. 24, both born in New York, are working a hay ranch.

John S. McConnell married Rilla Bryan October 29, 1890, recorded in Denver.

James A. McConnell married Bertha J. Reese December 31, 1892, in Lyons, recorded in Boulder County.  She's probably the Bertha in the 1880 census of Boulder County, 9, daughter of John 49 and H.C. 44.  Brother Frank was 8, Louis 7.  In 1880 Weld County John 43 is a gardener, Sarah 35, wtih mary J. 17, John 16, Bertha 4, and Gertrude 2.

 In 1900 "Lower Platte" precinct, Arapahoe County, Colorado, J. McConnell is farming, 39, Bertha 29, Ethel M. 6, Orville 4, Lenore 3, and Bernie three months.

Wm. H. is in Teller County in 1900, born Oct 1853 in New York, with Emma M. Apr 1872 in West Virginia (probably Emma Lightburn), Zola M. May 1893  and Nina F. 1895 both born in Colorado.  Calvin D. Lightburn, April 1873 West Virginia is with them.

Emma M. McConnell 1872-1909 is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Denver # 30735901.

 In 1910 Adams County, James A. McConnel is farming,  44, born in New York, married 17 years to Bertha G. 38, Colorado.  Ethel M. 16 was born in New York, Orville 14, Leenore 13 and Vernie 10 all born in Colorado.

On the same page is William H. McConnel 55 New York, widowed, with Rila M. 16, Mina 14, William Jr. 9, Teddy 5, Laily 2 and Mary seven months, all kids born in Colorado.

FindaGrave # # 97487945 has Hugh 1829-1913 buried in Walla Walla.

Hugh's wife, per one tree, died in 1894 in Montrose, South Dakota

William, per the Ancestry tree, was in Walla Walla, Washington in 1920, and died March 3, 1942 in Orange County, California, mother's name McCann.

In 1920 Adams County, James is 59, Bertha 49, Orville 24, Bernie L. 19, and Mary 10.

Bernie LaVern McConnell 1900-1988 # 82831912 and Irene 1902-1976 are buried in Lyons, Colorado.

"J. Albert 1860-1932 and Bertha Jane McConnell 1870-1958 are buried in Hygiene.

JOHN

James and William's father Hugh had a brother John born 1856, dying Dec 1915 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

John McConnell lived in   Winchester, Canada in 1888 He lived in Gloucester, Russell, Ontario, Canada in 1901. He lived in Gloucester, Russell, Ontario, Canada in 1901. He lived in Russell, Ontario, Canada in 1911.

So if he participated with nephew in the Yuma County land claims, only traveling the minimum, he wouldn't have appeared in teh newspap.
