Joseph Kortus proved up next to them in 1895.
Andreas and Caroline Turner lived in Bukovina, Austria-Hungary. In 1887 health problems struck the Turners. Andreas and Caroline had already lost one child to tuberculosis and now another child, Fanny, had TB. In 1887, a Bukovina doctor advised Andreas, Caroline and family to leave Europe and go to the United States where Fanny would reap the benefits of a better climate for her disease. Sailing in the spring of 1887 more than twenty-one relatives made the trip, including five Turner children – Fanny, Adolph, Rupert, Robert, Katie and her husband, Joseph Kortus. Also on this trip were the families of Ed Kunzman, Ambrose Kunzman, Ambrose Winkelbauer, and Peter Koskovich. Andreas brought along his favorite team of horses. Passenger records from the ship Saale show Andreas, Caroline, Fanny and Adolph leaving Bremen, Germany, and arriving in New York City on June 18, 1887.

After landing in the United States, the Turners bought covered wagons to travel to Mason City, Iowa, where someone in their group had a relative. While in Mason City, the Turners heard of homesteading in Colorado and journeyed to Yuma, Colorado. The change in climate didn’t help Fanny’s tuberculosis. She died and was buried in Yuma.
Left behind in Bukovina was the Turner’s youngest child Aloysia, better known as Louisa. On February 3, 1882 she married Franz Hicke. Franz and Louisa received letters from Colorado telling of the wealthy Americans and the wonderful farmland. Andreas Turner sent money from the United States to his son-in-law in Bukovina to help fund Franz’s family journey to America. With five year-old Peter and three year-old Mary, Franz and Louisa left in the summer of 1892.
To get to America, the Hicke family traveled to Hamburg, Germany. Everyone boarded the ship Normannia and traveled Third Class Steerage through the English Channel and across the Atlantic Ocean, landing at Ellis Island in New York City on July 9, 1892. After going through immigration, the Hickeys caught a train for Colorado. Everyone had tags attached to their clothes so the train personnel knew their name and destination. The only one who spoke English was Franz.
fRANZ AND lOUISA hICKEY.
By late summer of 1892, Franz, Louisa, and their family arrived at Yuma, Colorado. One of Franz's top priorities was obtaining his U.S. citizenship. He declared his intention for citizenship in August 1892. Life in Colorado was hard for the new immigrants. For two years, the Hickeys and Turners did their best with poor farming conditions because of a multi-year drought. While in Yuma, Louisa became pregnant for the sixth time and gave birth to their first U.S. born child, Rudolph, on March 15, 1894. Later that year, the Hickeys and Turners were looking for a rural area with plenty of rainfall and good farmland. They, along with the Kortuses, left their homesteads in Yuma and traveled by covered wagon across the prairies to Iowa. By 1895 all three families permanently settled in Randolph, Nebraska.
