James Wirt, Clifford H. Wirt, Fox
| CLIFFORD WIRT Clifford H. Wirt, of the firm of R. Wirt & Co., tile manufacturers of Saybrook, is a native of this county, and was born April 16, 1859. He is the son of John and Emily A. (Linton) Wirt, both natives of Ohio. John Wirt was born in 1837, and followed farming pursuits the greater part of his life in his native State. The mother was born in 1838 and is still living. Their seven children were, Clifford, Hattie, Annie, James L., Giles J., Edward and Homer. The subject of this history learned tile-making in 1883, at Saybrook. He is still a young man, but his industry and energy indicate that he will become prominently identified with the business interests of this section in the near future. He was married, Feb. 1, 1887, to Miss Bessie E. Johnson, a native of this State, who was born April 6, 1866. She is the daughter of Joseph C. and Mary (Alexander) Johnson, of English parentage and ancestry, and traces her ancestry back to Alexander the Great. Our subject has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the past ten years. Mrs. Wirt united with the Christian Church in 1884, in which she is a prominent member and Superintendant of the Sabbath-school. She is a lady of rare culture and refinement, of great energy, and is engaged in the millinery business for herself at Saybrook." [NOTE: I question year this was written because it purports to speak of their wedding date in 1887, two years after this was allegedly written.] |
Possibly they're in McLean County, Illinois in 1880, with John 45 and Emily 43 Wirt. Clifford is 21, Hattie 19, Anna N. 17, James 14, Giles J. 12, Edward 9, and F. Homer 4.

James cash-claimed a quarter in 26, 4S 47W in 1890, the same year that Gotthilf Idler claimed two quarters next to him.
In 1900 Boone County Iowa James Wirt, born July 1865 in Illinois, is single, a painter, living alone.
In 1910 Weld County, Colorado, James Wirt is 48, born in Illinois, a painter, single, with a hired man Joseph Sullen 20, also Illinois.
In 1920 McLean County James, 54, is with his widowed mother Emily, 83, and still a painter.

MRS. EMILY WIRT
Aged Resident of Ellsworth Passed Away at Early Hour Wednesday
Mrs. Emily E. Wirt, 90, of Ellsworth, died at her home Wednesday morning at 5:30
o'clock following a 10 days illness from debilities due to old age.
Emily Linton, daughter of James and Elizabeth Linton, pioneer settlers of Dawson
township, was born March 8, 1836 and is the last of a family of 10 children. She
came to Illinois with her parents in 1856, making the trip in a covered wagon
and her family with 50 other groups camped one night on what is now the site of
Farmer City, then a tiny village. The Linton family located at Ellsworth.
She was married to John Wirt in June 1858. Seven children were born to the
union, four of whom survive. They are Mrs. Logan Fry and E.M. Wirt of Leroy; C.H.
Wirt of Los Angeles, Cal., and Homer Wirt of Chicago. Hattie, James and Guy
preceded their mother in death. There are also 22 grandchildren and 24 great
grandchildren.
Mrs. Wirt was a member of the M.P. church and was very active, even doing her
own house work. She lived alone in Ellsworth, but spent the winter months with
her daughter, Mrs. Annie Fry in Leroy. Funeral services will be held this
afternoon at 3:00 o'clock from the M.E. church in Ellsworth. Burial will be made
in the Frankeberg [sic] cemetery, south of Ellsworth.

CLIFFORD
In 1900 Clifford H. Wirt is a desk sergeant at the police station in Rock Island, Illinois, married 13 years to Bessie E. April 1866. They have Glen June 1889, Florence M., May 1893, and Lilian Feb 1896, all born in Illinois.
In 1910 they're in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Clifford is a salesman at a hardware store. All three kids are with them, with J.Glenn working for the railroad (so maybe Clifford had connections to travel cheaply to Yuma County?)
Clifford timber-claimed a quarter in 13, 5S 47W in 1901.
In 1920 Clifford and Bessie are in Imperial County, California - he's a clerk in a hardware store - no kids.
1-7-1952 Letter from (Clifford Harley Wirt) C. H. Wirt to Ethel T. Wirt "Riverside, Cal. Jan. 7 - 1952 Dear Cousin Ethel, Your welcome letter just received I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well and can sympathise with you, as I have been in the same condition since July 1950 when I had a stroke that put me in bed for 6 months. I have been located here a year and am able to care for myself, and take daily walks from 10 to 14 blocks with the aid of a cane. Florence [must be Florence M. Wirt] is located here and sees me daily. She urged me to have a physical examination last week, and the Dr. pronounced me in perfect condition, and said I may live to 100, 92 now. Jane is in U. S. O. work at Lawton Oklahoma. Glen is still in Imperial Valley, and his family well scattered the oldest son an instructor in Stanford Uni. next one Superintendent of electrisity of Iperial district, the youngest a chemist for the Spreckels beet sugar interests. And he has two daughters that are doing their part. Just yesterday my 11th great-grandchild was born. They come so fast I can hardly keep track of them. A week ago two daughters of my sister Annie LeRog (LeRoy?) Ill. and their husbands called on me, they drove out to see Ill. beat Calif. Annie is still quite active at 88 years. Do you remember Davie Gring? An old time friend of your Father. We drove to Ontario recently to visit him. He had a stroke a year ago, his entire right side is paralized and dont seem to improve. He is 3 years older than I. I do not have any payrse (?) Just a weakness in lower limbs. What I need now is something to occupy my time. I did enjoy checker playing with a guest here each day. He left last week which leaves me lonesome. John Wirt [Must be John Bruce Wirt, Jr.] is liveing in an auto trailer at his Daughters in L.A. I am thoroly disgusted with all this corruption and scandal. And if we are able to elect Taft he shure will have a dirty mess to clean up.
