One tree says John Henry Steckel was born to Tilman Steckel and Maria Ourn, and married Susan Catherine Snyder.

In 1880 Hamilton County, Nebraska, John Steckel is 16, born in Minnesota, one of five kids of widowed Tilman Steckel, 50.

In 1885 Hamilton County Til is 53, Danal 22, John 21, Mina 18, Geo 16, and Emma 7.

Susan is 9, with Levi and Cathryn in 1880 Hamilton County, Kansas, but in 1885 the 14-year-old is called Cathren.

John cash-claimed a quarter in 23, 4S 47W in 1891.

In 1900 Rock County Nebraska, John H. Steckel is 36, Susan C. 30, Elvin E. 12, Addie M. 10, and Vida E. 4. (Addie married Paul Whitford, and they're buried in Sterling 57718357 - October 30, 1889 - April 7, 1954)

In 1910 Valley County Nebraska J.H. Steckl is 45, Susan 37.  They have Elvin 22, Vida 13, Lloyd 3, John one month.

John is "widowed" in 1920 Grand Junction, living with daughter "Veda" Hathman, 24 and her husband Arthur.   Loyd Steckel, 14, is also with them.

In 1920 it looks like Susie has married Sumner W. McKenzie 45, born in Kansas and they're living in Hayes County, Nebraska - with her mother Catherine Penticoff Snyder, 86, with them.

 Catherine Penticoff was born in Ohio September 2nd, 1828, and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. McKenzie at Hayes Center,  Nebraska, April 12th, 1926, at the age of 97 tears, 7 months and 10 days.
    When about fourteen years of age, she with her parents moved to Pennsylvania, where she met and married Levi Snyder, and shortly after their marriage the young couple moved to Freeport, Illinois.
    About 52 years ago Mrs. Snyder, with her husband, moved to Hamilton County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded not far from Aurora, later moving to Giltner where they resided for many years.
    17 children were born to this marriage, of whom 5 died in infancy. Twenty four years ago Mrs. Snyder was left a widow, and in 1910 she was united in marriage with William McKenzie, only to be left a widow again a few years later. For the past eight years Mrs. McKenzie has made her home with her daughter, Susan C. McKenzie, at Hayes Center. She was a woman who met the trials of life with fortitude and patience-a pioneer of sterling character. Catherine McKenzie leaves to mourn her departure 8 children and 5 grandchildren, As follows: Mrs. Susan McKenzie of Hayes Center, Mrs. Margaret Carl of Chicago; Mrs. Amanda Wabel of Hamlet; Thos. Snyder of Woodriver, Nebr., S.W. Snyder of Stratton., Mrs. Ellen Wabel of Hamlet., Mrs. Emma Stafford of Selway, Mont., Levi Snyder of Hayes Center., Orville and William Snyder of Hayes Center., Alonzo Snyder and Charles Rima of Grand Island, and Mrs. Sadie Espenzie of Rock Springs, Wyo., are the grandchildren.
    Mrs. McKenzie was laid to rest at Giltner, Ne.

Mrs. Susie McKinzie married William Baker November 28, 1929 in Sterling.

In 1930 John is still in Mesa County, divorced, and Lloyd is still with him.

In 1930 Logan County, Colorado - where Elvin had been living in 1920 and Addie is buried- John N. Steckel 20, is with his mother Susie C. Baker, 57, Illinois, who says she's married, but no spouse.

Buried in Sterling is "Sussie C. Baker, born April 22, 1870, died Aug 26, 1939"   58095878

  1914

Vida Ellen Steckel, 17, married Arthur E. Huthman, 19,"at the Steckel ranch near Yampa", Colorado April 22, 1912, and one tree says she died November 20, 1976 in Los Angeles.

1916 "Mrs. Luckett and Mrs. Steckel and son of Yampa spent Tuesday in Oak Creek."

 

In Orchard Mesa cemetery, Grand Junction is John H. Steckel 1864-1954 = 55416929
