Charlie A. and Juanita Mattingley,  Joes

In 1870 Spencer County, Indiana, Augustin Mattingly is 37, Elizabeth 35, Lodorky L. 17, James F. 14, Julius J. 13, Ida L. 11, Joseph 9, Ulises G. 7, Kate E. 4, and Charlie 3.

In 1880 Charles Mattingly is 13, in Spencer County Indiana with James 25, his sisters Julia 23 and Ida 21, brothers Joseph 10 and W.S. 17, sister Kate 15, and "son" Charles 13.

In 1880 Jeanette Harrington is 3, with Thompson Harrington 38 and Martha 37 in McPherson, Kansas.  Siblings are Oran C. 14, William D. 9, Ulysess H. 7, Neoma 5, Margarette 1.  Margarette was born in Kansas, all the others in Missouri.

In 1900 (F.B. in the index) T.B. born April 1842 in Missouri and Martha June 1843 Missouri are in Denver, no occupation.  With them are O.C. Jan 1866, William Dec 1869, and Ulysses Oct 1871, all three sons laborers.


In 1910 Jefferson County Charles, farmer, born April 1867 and Nettie May 1876,  have Doris April 1898 and Ida October 1899.

In 1910 Kirk precinct Charles A. Mattingley, farmer,  43, born in Indiana, and Nettie 33, Missouri have Doris L, 12., Ida N. 10, Gladys D. 8, Joseph H. 5, James F.,3, and Ina five months, all kids born in Colorado.

Charlie proved up on a quarter in 33, 4S 47W - the quarter where the New Hope cemetery is located - in 1914, witnesses Charles N. White, Robert E. Mavity, Henry Babb, and John A. Mavity.

In 1920 they're back farming in Jefferson County, with Ida N. 20 a printer, Eleonor G. 18 working at an engraving company, Joseph A. 15 an apprentice at a railroad, Elden 13, Ina M. 10, and Valentine M. 3.

In June, 1920  Charles A. Mattingley petitioned the Denver juvenile court that Grover Forrest Hudson be deprived of the custody of his two children, Lola, then aged two years, and Elsie, three months.  The court ordered the children into the custody of Mattingley and his wife, with leave to the father to merely visit them.  The children were temporarily with their mother at the house of Charles Mattingley when their mother died.

Doris is married to Grover F. Hudson, and in 1920 they're in Denver with Lola,  1.  Gladys 18 and Joe 16 are living with them.

In Fairmount Cemetery, Denver is Doris Hudson 1899- buried March 14, 1920 - 121846224

In 1930 Joseph is an automobile mechanic in Arapahoe County, married to Lois, 25, Indiana, and they have June L. 3 and  Jean 3, both born in Indiana.

On the same page are Charlie and Juanita, with Valentine 14, and granddaughters Lola A Hudson 11 and Elsie M. 10, both born in Colorado.

One tree said  Junettie Harrington, born 1876 in Mercer County Missouri,   father Thompson B. Harrington, Jr., mother Martha Jane Belcher. 

SSDI has "Junettie Mattingley, born May 30, 1877, dying July 1969, last residence Denver" - She is buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver.

(Riverside Cemetery, Denver, has a Thompson Harrington buried March 1904, "Co D, 2 MO CAV")

Fairmount on-line sexton's records have a Chas A. Mattingley, age 72, January 12, 1940, and the newspaper index has a Charles A. Mattingly obituary with a date of January 9, 1940.

Ida N. Mattingley married Rodney O. Thrasher Dec 25, 1920 in Arvada.  (Rodney Olney Thrasher registered in Stratton, Colorado, born Nov 13, 1896 at Oxford Nebraska.  In 1920 his mother Ida Thrasher, 56, was in the Joes precinct, mother of Elsie J. White, 30 and her husband Charles N. 36.  In 1940 Ida, 76, is in Denver with daughter Maude A. Mavity, 52 and her husband John A. 64, and Elsie I. White, 50 is also with them.  Charles Norman White had come from Easton, Maryland, to Kansas where he married twenty-year-old Elsie Irene Thrasher.  In 1906 they moved to the Colorado prairie and later to the present site of Joes and opened a store and post office on their homestead.  Charles died Jan 18, 1937 and is buried in New Hope, Joes   67347000   ---   The first postmaster of Joes, Charles N. White, wanted to use his middle name Norman as the name of the post office which was turned down by the Postmaster General because it was "too common". At a loss Mr. White noted that several sons of local settlers were named Joseph and reapplied. The Joes post office was established in 1912  )

In 1930 Arvada, Rodney O., 32 and Ida N. 30 have Doris E. 8 and Juanita V. 4.

All four of them are in Adams County in 1940.

On the same census page in 1940 are Elden Mattingly 33, with Mollie 27, Charles Elden 10, Gale Donald 1,

Next household is Val Mattingly, 24, Dorothy May 21, Lou Milva 2, and James Lee 1.

Ina M. Mattingley, 65,  married Howard L. Nelson, 67 Feb 23, 1975 in Sacramento County.

California death records have Ina May Nelson born Aug 16, 1909 dying Jan 22, 1995 in San Bernardino County, mother's maiden name Herrington, father Mattingley.

She's buried in Desert Lawn, Riverside County.  51573715

Elden J. Mattingley married Mollie Murray April 18, 1929 in Arvada, Colorado

Eldon James Mattingley -1907-1967 = 64191164 =  and Mollie Elizabeth (Murray) Mattingley July 15, 1912 - Dec 1, 1985 are buried in Montrose, Colorado.

Joseph married Katherine Ella McElwain Dec 16, 1933.

Joseph A. Mattingley - June 3, 1904 - October 15, 1995 is buried in the Louisville, Colorado cemetery - on the same stone as Katherine E. - Sept 4, 1914 -May 14, 1988.

One of Juanita's brothers was William , born 1869 Missouri.  - William D. Harrington married Celia M. Dilts in Denver March 28, 1913.  If this is the same one in Nebraska in 1910, widowed, and in the 1913 Denver directory, they would be about the same age.  In 1900 Madison County Nebraska "Cilia" was born May 1850 in Illinois, married to Gilbert Dilts, with son Walter D. Dilts, March 1885 Nebraska

AND Missouri was the daughter of Harvey Belcher and Susan Williams.

In 1848 Harvey Belcher was a Presidential Judge in the national presidential elections. I'm inclined to thing IF THIS IS THE SAME MAN, Henry was a nickname and Harvey was his given name at birth and when he signed on with the government for his "official job" he used
his legal name on the job application. Two of Harvey/Henry/Harry and Susan Williams Belcher's daughters are both my great great grandmothers. Missouri Ann Elizabeth Belcher married William Leonard Stepp and were pioneers in the Denver area. Martha Jane Belcher
married Thompson Boneurgus Harrington, JR. Missouri's daughter Lora Valley Stepp (my G Gma) married Martha's son Ulysses Harvey Harrington (my G Gpa). And, to even unite the families further another of Missouri's sons married one of Martha's daughters. My dad had lots and lots and lots of double cousins.

Celia DILTZ m in Denver, CO, William David Harrington b bet 1869 - 1871.

William David was blind in one eye, and I've seen it written almost blind in the other. William was in the 1900 Denver Census, but I believe he died in Canada much later. I have more on William David Harrington's family.

I have nothing else on Celia Diltz, but would love for a match here. I've very curious about her parents and siblings.

THOMPSON BONEURGUS HARRINGTON and wife MARTHA JANE BELCHER, my GGgrandparents were enumerated in the 1880 McPherson City, McPherson Co., KS. Census. They moved there after being enumerated 10 years earlier 1870 Trail Creek Twp Harrison Co., MO. Census.

By the time of the 1900 Census they were living and working in Denver City, Precinct 3, Ward 11, Arapahoe Co., CO.

Because there is no 1890 Census as a reference point, I was wondering if any the readers of this list have any references about my family or ties to this family to help place them either here in KS or in CO during the 20 year gap.

Children enumerated and their ages at the time of the 1880 Census:
Oran Callister 15, William David 11, ULYSSES HARVEY 8, Naomi 5, Junettie 3 and baby Margarette less than 1.

Anna Belcher, daughter of Nelson and Nancy C. Rutledge, widow of Erastus Belcher, born Feb 14, 1872 in Poweshiek Iowa, died September 17, 1955 in Nodaway County, Missouri, buried in Oak Hill, Maryville, Missouri.
