Frank E. and Della (Alcorn)(Nicholson) Merrill, Laird


In 1900 Cloud County, Kansas, Henry L. Merrill is 62, Annie C. 53, both born in Ohio. Frederick is 27, Frank born July 1874, Charles 23, Augustus 20, Abbie 16, and Mary 15 were all born in Kansas.

1905 Ottawa, Kansas "Henry Merrill, who has been the guest of his brother, O. B. Merrill, the past three weeks, returned to his in Cloud county yesterday af ternoon."

Henry L. Merrill 1837-1928 # 94345719 is buried in Oakland Union Cemetery, Cloud County, with Anna 1847-1926.

Frank E. Merill married Margaret M. Wharton on August 11, 1902, recorded in Denver (but this is not likely.)

Frank proved up 320 acres in sections 7 and 18, 2N 42W in 1916.
That land would be about six miles north of Laird, twenty miles from Forrest's claim.

In 1910 Dickinson County, Kansas, Charles Nicholson is 44, born in Kentucky, widowed. Annie is 16, Mary A. 14, Frances 11, Tessie 7, and William B. his brother is 38.
Next household is Joseph P. Clennon 35 and Agnes 33, married five years.

Della Alcorn is in Dickinson County in 1910, 16 born in Kansas, with mother Hanna E. 48 Babb, who's been married seven years to Grant S. Babb 45 both born in Indiana.

Hannah is probably Hannah Wells, sister of Charles A. Wells 1863-1946 buried in Miltonvale # 94450647.
William T. Wells 1858-1942 is also buried there # 94450671.
Walter A. Wells 1868-1946 # 70625709 and Effie M. 1877-1964 are also buried in Miltonvale.

Charles Thomas Nicholson 1866-1914 is buried in Dickinson County. He was first married to Agnes McGrath of Topeka, who died, lwaving six children. Charles then married Della ASlcorn June 2, 1913.

In 1915 Dickinson County, Kansas, Pierce Clemson is 75, Della Nicholson and Anna Nicholson both 21, Frances 16, and Teresa 13.

February 28, 1917, Concordia Kansas "A marriage license was issued to Frank E. Merrill, aged 42 of Miltonvale and Delia Nicholson aged 23 of Chapman. The couple was married by Judge Thompson."

In 1920 Yuma County, Frank is farming, 45, born in Kansas, with wife Della 26 born in Kansas.

January 1922 "Mrs. Della Merrill, who has been spending several months in Kansas came home last Thursday."

March 23, 1922 " Mr. and Mrs. Charles Merrill came on Saturday from Miltonvale, Kansas, to make a visit at the Frank Merrill home. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Merrill and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Merrill were Sunday visitors at the Joe Green home. Frank Merrill and Roy Werning were hauling hay from the Caldwell ranch Monday."

Frank is widowed in 1930 Cloud County, Kansas, 55, born in Kansas.
He's also listed with his sister Abbie 46 and George Henderson 49. Mary Merrill , single 45 is also in the household.

Abbie 1883-1974 # 37990461 and George F. Henderson 1880-1964 are also buried in Oakland Union cemetery.

In 1940 Yuma County, Frank E. Merrill is widowed, 65 born in Kansas, living alone. He was in Cloud County, Kansas in 135.

Frank E. Merrill 1874-1947 is buried in Oakland Union cemetery, Miltonvale, Cloud County # 94345524.

Della Lola Merrill 1894-1929 is buried in Miltonvale Cemetery, Miltonvale # 44937538.





Garden City Kansas, October 24, 1962
Charles Albert Merrill, 85, 1109 N. llth, died at St. Catherine Hospital early today after a lengthy illness. He was a retired farmer and had moved to Garden City from near Concordia five years ago. He was born March 10, 1877 at Miltonvale, and married Anna Clara Calahan at Mound City on Dec. 1, 1905. Survivors, in addition to the widow, are a daughter, Mrs. Walter Buell, 2524 N. Main; sons Cloid E. of Nashville, Tenn., and Cecil D. of Wichita; sisters Mrs. Abbie Henderson and Miss Mary Merrill, both of Concordia, three grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phelps Funeral Home in Miltonvale. Burial will be at Oakand Union Cemetery there.

Mrs. Anna Clara Merrill, 83, 1109 N. 11th, died unexpectedly Friday evening at her home.

Born Dec. 5, 1884, in LaCygne, she had been a resident of Garden City since moving here from Concordia in 1957. She was married to Charles Albert Merrill Dec. 1, 1905, in Linn County. He died Oct. 24, 1962.

She attended the Christian Church, Miltonvale.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Walter Buell, 2524 N. Main; two sons, Cloid E. Merril, Nashville, Tenn., and Cecil D. Merrill, Wichita; two brothers, James Calahan, Los Angeles, Calif., and Frank Calahan, Oil City, La.; two sisters, MRs. Amanda Haas, LaCygne, and Mrs. Kate Sims, Paola; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Christian Church, Miltonvale, with the Rev. Larry Walden, officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Union Cemetery, Miltonvale.

Phillips-White Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
