Clara L. (Farr) Collins, Alvin


In 1850 Addison County, Vermont, Clarissa is 15, with Jesse B. (Buell) Farr, 46 and Hannah 45. James is 24, Henry 23, Horace 14, and Joly 10.


Jessie 1803-1885 is buried in Addison County, # 97574278, with Hannah Guyette (Sumner) Farr 180501888 # 97574331.


Clara's younger brother Horace L. Farr 1830-1907 was in Henry COunty, Iowa in 1880, and is buried in Colorado Springs # 34811526.

Clarra L., born at Huntington, Vermont, and Loyal Collins born at Monkton, had Leonard Leonard B. COllins June 28, 1857 in Monkton, Vermont.

(Leonard B. Collins 1857-1960 is buried in Chuluota, Florida # 26599776.)

In 1880 Henry County, Iowa, Loyal S. Collins is farming 50, Clara L. 46, with Ellen 13 and Harvey 9.
Daughter Caroline Clemmons 20 is with them, as is Homer B. 1 her son.

"Linard" B. Collins born in Vermont to Loyal S. Collins and Clara L. Farr, married Amelia T. Steaver in Buena Vista County Iowa June 16, 1885.

"Loyal S. Collins, aged 79 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. N. Clemmons, 15721 Vincetines ave. He was the husband of Clara Collins and father of Mrs. W. N. Clemmons and H. B. Collins of Chicago, L. B. Collins of Atlanta, Ga., and A. J. Ambler, of Wray, Colo. The funeral was held Thursday, February 4th, and interment was made in Mount Greenwood cemetery. The above was the grand-father of H. B. Clemmons, who used to be with tho Red Cloud Nation and Chief. "


Clara's husband Loyal Smith Collins 1830-1909 is buried in Chicago # 137958650.

In 1910 Chicago, Clara is widowed, 76, born in Vermont, with daughter Caroline H. Clemmons 50 and her husband Wm. N. Clemmons 54.

September 1910 "Mrs. Clara Collins arrived last week from Chicago, to spend the winter with her daughter Mrs. E. L. Ambler."

1912 "Mrs. C.L. Collins spent a few days of last week at the L.D. Mulliosn home...

Lew Mattson and family, Al Swintz and family, L.D. Mullison and daughter Ima took Sunday dinner at the E.L. Ambler home."

1912 Wray "Mrs. Clara Collins, a lady seventy-eight years young who has a fine claim in the sandhills valley, took a horse-back ride of a mile Sunday afternoon. She has a nice garden she cares for herself. The vegetables are fine and no weeds. Who does better?"

Clara proved up 320 acres in 2 and 3, 4N 44W in 1917 (that land was owned partialy by the Merrill family, and partiallly by the Ambler in 1920. E. L. Ambler proved up 40 acres next to Clara's in 1922.)
Her witnesses were Claude C. Burchett and Victor H. Fair - addresses Holyoke, and Oliver H. Goodwin and Laura M. Ambler of Wray.

Lura M. Ambler proved up two quarters in 34, 5N 44W in 1917, and Buell C. Ambler 320 acres in 33, 5N 44 in 1919.

June 1913 E. L. Ambler came down from his ranch today and reports crop conditions in the sand hills to be all one could ask. His mother, Mrs. Clara Collins, accompanied him and will spend two weeks at the Ambler home in Wray."

July 2, 1914 "We wish to speak a few words for one of our enterprising farmers in the sand hills, E. L. Ambler and family whose home is eighteen miles north of Wray. Mr. Ambler is not only a farmer, but is intensely interested in making the soil of the sand hills yield the best it can in the cultivation of fruit, both large and small. His orchard is a seven-acre tract enclosed by a hedge of trees and contains a good and well developed field of peaches, plums, cherries and apples, together with several varities of berries. Mr. Ambler planted this orchard ten years ago and has since given a great part of his time to its study and care, experimenting with different varieties of different fruits and the result is a beautiful orchard yielding fruit for their own use and a surplus for the market. Grandma Collins, mother of Mrs. Ambler, and who has reached the age of 74 years, is spending this summer as usefully as Mr. Ambler and is cultivating trees and a large garden on her homestead which joins the Ambler land." "

In 1920 Clara is living in Chicago with daughter Caroline Clemmons. Her son Harvey E. Collins 49 is widowed, living with them.
Clara L. Collins died in 1926, and is buried in Chicago # 53061527.

MRS. CLARA L. COLLINS IS DEAD AT AGE OF 94

Leaving four children, 14 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren, of 94 years last Friday, at the home of her son, Harvey Collins, 50 W. lO8th st. Mrs. Collins, who was born in Huntington, Vermont, March 16, 1834, came to the middle-west with her husband and four children in 1869, locating in New London, Iowa, and moved to Chicago in 1885. With the exception of a period of months each year from 1903 to 1909, spent in proving a claim near Wray, Colorado, her residence in Chicago has been continuous.
In addition to Harvey Collins the surviving children are Leonard B. Collins of Orlando, Fla.. Mrs. Nell Ambler of Wray, Colo., and Mrs. Caroline Clemmons, Blue Island, Illinois. Mrs. Collins was the grandmother of Homer B. Clemmons of the Blue Island Sun-Standard staff. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, October 23, at the Englewood Christian church, with the Rev. C. Q. Kindred officiating. Interment was at Mt. Greenwood cemetery.
