Lucy Frances (Burrows) Hayes, Alvin

Lucy was born Janaury 7, 1850 at Concord Station, Pennsylvania to Thomas BUrrows.

In 1850 Erie County, Pennsylvania, Thomas Burrows is 32, Elizabeth 22, William 7, Martha 5, and newborn Charles.
In 1860 Thomas is now married to Keziah.

In 1870 Erie County, Pennsylvania, Thomas Burrows is a minister, 52, born in England, with Heziah 37. Martha is 24, LUCY 19, George 14, Alice 12, Eva 10, Elmon 9, Edgar 7, Walter 4, and Alfre 2.

Thomas is buried in Erie County # 73704320, 117-1907.

In 1880 Geauga County, Ohio, Edward Hayes is 32, Lucy F. 28, Mary A. 8, Alva 6, and William S. 2. Her sister Martha Wilson, 33, divorced, is with them.

In 1900 Clay County, Nebraska, Lucy, born January 1871 in Pennsylvania has had two kids, both living. William Sept 1877 in Ohio is a salesman. Leota April 1887 in Pennsylvania .

March 1912, Wray "Mrs. Lucy L. Hayes, of Laird was transacting business in town Tuesday."
Lucy proved up two quarters in section 12, 4N 43W in 1919. Her witnesses were Jim Colson, William C. Richards, William E. Minton, and George W. Starkey, all of Alvin.
In 1920 Valley precinct, Lucy is 68, widowed, born in Pennsylvania, living with daughter Leota M. Colson 32, also born in Pennsylvania. James R. Colson is 37, Loren H. 13, Fred H. 12, Harold J. 9, all born in Nebraska. Inez E. 5, and Berlinea 1, both born in Colorado

In 1922 the county atlas shows James with 480 acres in section 13, 320 acres in the tsection 18 4N 42W and living in that section 18.
and Lucy with her 320. Lew Cornish is working wtih James, owning 240 accres in setion 24.

Lucy was delinquent on taxes for that land in 1923.

In 1930 Chase County, Nebraska, Jim Colson is 49, Leota 44, Lonie 23, Fred 22, Inez 15, aNd Bernice 11. Lucy HAyes, 79 is living with them.

She's buried in Clay County, Nebraska 1850-1938 # 10491467.
"Mother of Mary Ann, Charles T. (a.k.a. Thomas Edward), William Stephen, and Leota May. Lucy was the fourth child for Thomas Edgar Burrows (1817-1907). Her mother was Elizabeth Luce (1827-between 1851 & 1855), her father's second wife. Her mother died after Lucy's birth and her father then married Keziah Beardsly. Lucy's father Thomas was a minister in Elgin, Erie County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Burrows was born in England and her mother in New York. Thomas is buried in Concord Cemetery, Elgin, Pennsylvania. The resting place of her mother is not known.
Lucy was 20 when she married Edward J. Hayes, Jr. The family moved to Clay County, Nebraska about 1890. In 1895 Lucy filed for and obtained a divorce. She never remarried. She lived most of her older years with her daughter Leota Hayes-Colson in Chase County, Nebraska.
After her death in 1938 in Chase County, her remains were buried in Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield, Clay, Nebraska. Her grave, and that of her son Charles T. Hayes, are not marked with a tombstone.  "




THOMAS

"The Sterling Democrat, Sterling, CO, Friday, November 17, 1899, page 1, column 2: "A consumptive named Hayes died in this city Saturday night. The remains will be taken to his home at Fairfield, Neb., for interment by his mother and brother. It is sad indeed to lose a loved one among strangers."

The Glenville Bee, Glenville, Nebraska, Friday, November 17, 1899, page 8: "Fairfield: The funeral of Mr. Hayes was held yesterday "

LEOTA

James LeRoy Colson was born September 5, 1882 in Western, Nebraska to Lincoln Colson and Minerva Pantieer, dying April 15, 1960 in Phoenix, Arizona.
He married Lucy eota May Hayes born March 22, 1887 who died in Benkelman, Nebraska December 20,m 1964.

In 1910 Frontier County, Nebraska James Colson is 27, Leota 22, married five years. Lyman is 3, Fred 2, and Orrill W. 1. All five were born in Nebraska.
February 26, 1909 Wray "James Colson of Vernon was in the county seat on business Wednesday of this week."

Jim Colson proved up two quarters in 13, 4N 43W in 1917 - next to Lucy's
His witnesses were James H. CoAst, William D. Minton, Jasper N. Myers, and Clem Richards, all of Alvin.

July 24, 1919 "Mr. and Mrs. L. Colson, who had been visiting their son, James Colson and family, near Alvin, left Friday evening for their home in Fairfield, Neb.. They think this country has improved greatly during the last five years."

July 31, 1919 Wray "Mesdames Jim Colson, Lew Cornish and sister-in-law, Mrs. D. H. Gilbert of Lockwood, Mo., who is visiting Mrs. Gilbert, motored down from Alvin, Thursday, to do some shopping here."

Leota 1887-1964 Colson is buried in Chase County # 104874659
Fred Hayes Colson born in Frontier County, died on fcarbon monoxide poisonin January 2, 1955, marrying Bernice Amelia Norman on June 9, 1937 in Sterling She died August 14, 1985 in Greeley.

LUCY'S HUSBAND

Lucy's husband Edward is buried in Lincoln, Nebraska 1848-1927
"Around 1890 he and his family moved to Fairfield, Clay County, Nebraska. E.J. and Lucy divorce in 1895. According to census records E.J. marries his second wife Sarah C. Shuck about 1896.
Exactly what work E.J. did after the family moved to Nebraska around 1890 and prior to him rejoining the ministry in 1903 is not known. Clay county business directories for 1890-1891 show that he and his brother Solon are operating a general merchandise store in Sutton. No further information until the 1900 census has been located and by then he is living in western Nebraska in Lincoln County and reports his occupation as optometrist.
He began his ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1903 and was taken into the West Nebraska Conference in 1908. He served congregations in Potter, Gering, Kimball, Curtis, Sidney and Chappell. In 1916 he was obliged to give up his work because of ill health and then moved to University Place, Nebraska where he resided until his death, February 27, 1927. "

William is buried in Harvey County Kansas
"Husband of Valeria D. Gregory Hayes. Father of Violet O. (Hayes) Shropshire, Keith G. Hayes, Gretta S. (Hayes) Horton, W. Leighton Hayes, Glenn E. Hayes, and Gordon Hayes.

William S. Hayes was born in Middlefield, Geauga County, OH the third of four children born to Rev. Edward J. Hayes and Lucy Francis Burrows. About 1890 his family moved to Fairfield, Clay County, NE.

William and Valeria were married in 1902 in Bartley, Red Willow County, NE. Shortly thereafter Will and Val moved to Kansas. Will graduated from Southwestern Optical College, Kansas City, MO in 1905. From 1905 until his death in 1940 he practiced optometry both in Burrton and by traveling to numerous towns in southwestern Kansas. "
