JOHN SHROYER (1813-1897)

Obituary -- John Shroyer was born near Dayton, Ohio, Feb. 16, 1813. At the age of three years he moved with his parents to Sullivan county, Indiana, where Dec. 21, 1840, he was married to Mary Meadows. In the fall of 1841, he moved to Mercer county, Illinois, where he lived till 1876, when he came to Nodaway county, Mo., residing on the same place until his death.

Besides two children that died to infancy, Mr. Shroyer left seven children, twenty-two grand children, and eleven great grand children. The children are J.W., living near Gaynor, Chas. P., of Wray, Col, Catherine Beeder, and Harriet West of Mercer county, Ill, J.T. of Skidmore, and Emma and Raymond, who still live on the home place with their mother. Deceased was converted more than 40 years ago, and joined the United Brethren church and remained a member till death. His house was a home for the pioneer preachers for near half a century. He died in the full assurance of faith, October 26, 1897, aged 84 years, 8 months and 10 days. The funeral services were held at the home, conducted by the writer, after which the remains were interred at White oak cemetery, east of Pickering. (Nodaway Democrat, 04 Nov 1897)

CHARLES P. SHROYER
farmer and stock raiser, section 33, post office Hopkins, was born in Mercer County, Illinois, on the 11th day of July, 1844, being the son of John and Mary (Meadows) Shroyer. His father, who was an agriculturist, was a native of Dayton, Ohio, and his mother was born in Indiana. Charles passed his youth on a farm in Mercer County, Illinois, obtaining an education in the common schools of the neighborhood. In January, 1874, he became a resident of Missouri, locating in Nodaway County, where he now owns 260 acres of land, upon which is an excellent barn and a neat, comfortable house. A wind pump supplied the place with water. He is quite largely interested in stock raising, and has graded stock and some thoroughbred sheep. Mr. Shroyer has held the positions of school director and road overseer. He was married March 16, 1866, to Miss L. B. West, a daughter of H. R. West, a native of Kentucky. They have six children: Clara A., born February 8, 1867; Joseph R., born May 7, 1868; Effie, born August 4, 1870; Charles W., born December 18, 1871; Laura, born August 21, 1876, and Sarah A. born February 14, 1878. Mr. Shroyer is a member of the M. E. Church. He is Democratic in politics, and has done his share towards developing the richness of Nodaway County.

Laura might be the one married to Albert Flurea - In 1900 Nodaway County they have Jessie F. 3 and Hazel M. 1.

In 1850 Mercer County, Illinois, John 38 and Mary 34 Shroyer have John W. 8 , Charles P. 6, Catharine 4, James S. 2, and newborn Harriett.

In 1860 they've added Emma 6 and Raymond, 2.

In 1880 Nodaway County, Missouri, Charles B. is 35, married to Lovina B. 33, Illinois. They hae Clara A. 14, John R. 13, Effie 10, Charles W. 8, - all born in Illinois, Laura 3, and Anna, 2, both born in Missouri.

1906 Gladys Shroyer was a new pupil in the third grade in Wray.

1899 Wray "Frank Shroyer is a newly enrolled pupil"

J.G. In 1900 Nodaway County is William Logan ,Aug 1867 and "Etty" July 1870 both Illinois. Step-daughter Golda Filler, 10, Missouri is with them -maybe Ethel married earlier....

Evans married Goldie Filler February 28, 1909

In 1910 Yuma County "on the Vernon Road " are Guy 30, and Goldie M. 20 Evans, married one year.

In 1920 James G. and Golda M. have Opal E.,3 and William -six months., and all four are in 1930 Yuma County.

In 1940 Yuma County J. Guy and Goldie have "Opa" 24, a pharmacist at a retail drug store. Guy is the postmaster.

Opal E. Donelson, 87, of Greeley died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at the Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado inpatient unit in Greeley.

She was born Aug. 29, 1916, to James Guy and Goldie (Filler) Evans in Wray, where she attended elementary and high school. At the age of 17, she moved to Denver to attend and graduate from the Denver School of Pharmacy.
James Guy and Golda M. Evans are buried in the Wray cemetery.

In 1900 Yuma County Charles - born July 1844 in Illinois, has been married 35 years to Lovina, Mar 1858 (probably should be 1848)They have John R., May 1867, Illinois, and his wife Sella April 1870 Virginia - married five years.

Next household is Charles H. Dec 1872, married four years to Adie, Jan 1875 in Missouri. They have Lettie April 1897 Illinois and two-month-old boy, born in Colorado

That might be the C.W. Shroyer, proprietor of the City Dray Line in Wray.

The Shroyer House was a "railroad" hotel across the tracks north of the Wray railroad depot. In the 1890s it was known as Owings Hotel. The Charles Shroyer family appear to have acquired it about 1902-1904.

Sometime prior to 1910 the Shroyers sold it to Oscar Shields.
The Shroyer House

Although not as pretentious as the other Wray hotels, the Shroyer
House, situated north of the depot, is making rapid strides into public
favor. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Shroyer took charge of the hotel in December,
and their patronage grew from day to day, until now the house is taxed
to its utmost capacity in caring for its patrons. Guests are treated
with the utmost courtesy, and no other hotel in Wray surpasses it in the
excellence of its meals. Mrs. Shroyer is an exceptionally fine cook,
and the culinary department receives her personal supervision. The fare
is simply delicious and it is served invitingly and characterized by
abundance.

Mr. Schroyer is a native of Missouri and he came to Yuma county in
1898, engaging in the cattle business. Five years ago one of his legs
was amputated at the knee which resulted from a run-away accident. In
1895 he married, Miss Adah Chamberlain, a charming and accomplished
Missouri lady, and they have three children. The estimable couple are
highly regarded by all who know them, and their hotel well merits public
patronage.

In 1905 John W. Shroyer sued Charles P over a note, and land in 1N 44W - 320 aces was to be sold at a Sheriff's sale.

In 1905 the Beecher Island monument arrived "it took three cars to haul it here. Tom Grant and Pike Shroyer have the contract to haul it over. It required two two-horse teams, one four-horse team, and one six-horse team to take it over. The Denver marble works men came to put it up."

The Lavina B. Shroyer buried in the Long Branch Cemetery, Nodaway County might be ours - Mar 29, 1847 - May 9, 1908.

July 31, 1908

In 1909 Frank Shoryer was manager of the Hayseed Ranch, range 18 miles northwest of Wray.

July 1909 "Joe Shroyer, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Pike Shroyer, residing 10 miles southwest of town, was kicked on the head by a horse Wednesday evening and seriously injured. He was take to Denver Thursday morning for treatment. .....the little boy was much better and that hopes are entertained for his recovery."

December 31, 1909

In 1880 Nodaway County Missouri James T. Shroyer, 32, is married to Sarah R. 23, both born in Illinois. With them are Estella 10, Clarance 8, Gussie 2, Missouri and Burtha ten months, Missouri.

In 1910 Yuma County, "on the Haxtun road", Charles is widowed, living with son Frank E. 28 and his wife Edith L. 26, Iowa. They have Wayne E. 4, son Clare P. 3, and two month Keith.

On the same page are John R. and Sally, no children.

This might be the John R. Shroyer who married Verna Catherine Filler in Missouri in 1890, divorced her., a son Brice Otto Shroyer, born 1892, died in warren County Illinois September 9, 1945.

Also on that page are William H. Logan 42, married fifteen years to Effie, 39. Goldie M, 4 born in Missouri, is with them.

William H. 1867-1967 and Effie Shroyer Logan Aug 4, 1870 - Feb 20, 1923 - are buried in Parnell Cemetery, Nodaway County. The death record said her father was Charles P. Shroyer, mother Lovina West, "died at residence in rural Hurricane Township, informant Mrs. Guy Evans.

1911 "Mr. and Mrs. John Shroyer came back from Denver last Saturday night, bringing with them a small baby which they have adopted."

Marion "of Alvin" made three-year proof in 1911 for land in 4N 43W- witnesses Baker Post of Laird, James H. Coast, Charles L Rath, and John A. Conover of Alvin.

1912 "Mrs. George Lane and Mrs. Wecks arrived in Wray yesterday from Iowa and went out to the home of Frank Shroyer, north of town, for a short visit. Mrs. Lane is a sister and Mrs. Weeks a sisteri-in-law of Mrs. Shroyer."

1912 "School commenced Monday in the Frank Shroyer district with Miss Kate Hitchcock as teacher. As the school house is not yet completed, the school is being held in Mr. Shroyer's residence."

October 1912

1916 Eckley "An addition is being made to the A.E. Shea pool room which is to be used for a restaurant. Mrs. Frank Shroyer will be in cahrge."

John proved 320 acres in 28 and 33, 3N 45W, proving up in 1916. and in 1921 he added another 80 acres by script

James and Sadie proved up on 240 acres to the west of John in 1911.

1913 "Charles Shroyer came in from Anamosa, Iowa, Friday and is visiting different relatives in and around WSray. Mr. Shroyer was until a few months ago a resident of Yuma county but now is making his home in Iowa."

1915

1915 "John Shroyer bought the Frank Shroyer home. Frank expects to have a sale some time in March."

Franklin proved up on 320 acres to the south in 1916

Willis "of Alvin, Colorado" made entry for land in 4N 43W in 1919 - Witnesses were Marion E. Shroyer, John H. Coast, John A. Conover - all of Alvin, and John F. Post of Laird

1916 "C.W. Shroyer, popularly known as 'Pike', returned Saturday from an extended visit in the east."

June 1916

1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shroyer and little son, Dallis, Miss Lillian Gerard, sister of Mrs. Shroyer, in company with the Weller boys and their wives and babies, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Weller last Sunday."

1918 Yuma County - .C. P. Shroyer and Mary Shroyer filed for divorce.

1919 Yuma County - Charles Henry Shroyer and Florence Maye Shroyer filed for divorce.

Charles proved up on 320 acres to the east in 1922, and also in 1922 added another 320 by script.

In 1920 Frank and Edythe are still in Yuma County with Wayne, Clair, and Keith.

They're in Denver in 1930, where Frank is an ironworker, Edith does laundry, Wayne is a draftsman, and Clair doesn't have a job.

October 1923 "PIKE SHROYER DEAD - Word was received several days ago of the death of Pike Shroyer, who was well known to many Wray people 20 years ago when he lived here."

The Las Animas, Colorado cemetery ahs a stone "Charles Wesley Shroyer, Dec 18, 1871 - Oct 10, 1923 - His father was Charles Preston Shroyer -1844 -1927 and mother was Lavina Belle West Shroyer - 1848 - 1918"'

1930 Denver - Clair P. Shroyer and Ruth Shroyer filed for divorce.

Marion Elder Shroyer was born September 1, 1859 in Wright (one tree says Greene County) County Iowa, to Adam and Keziah (Antrim) Shroyer. married Emma Dallma on Feb 9, 1895 in Ottawa County, Kansas, and died Mar 15, 1923 in Wray. Emma was born March 6, 1856 in Kankakee, Illinois and died January 24, 1925 in Wray.
