James P. May



One tree said that James' parents were Alexander Proctor May 1834-1914 and Tressa Stanfield 1841-1927 buried in Cedar Hill, Smith County Kansas.

In 1880 Marion County, Iowa, "Proctor" is 2, with Alexander46 and Tressa 39. Van Martin May is 18, and Nancy A. 8.

In 1895 Smith County, Kansas, James P. is 17, Marget T. 11, with A.P. May 60 and Trese May 54.

In 1900 Smith County, Kansas, James P. May born March 1878 in Iowa, married three years to Hannah May 1878 Kansas, have Edna Dec 1898 Knnsas.


Mrs. A. P. May, nearly 87 years old, pioneer lady of this place, died at the Funk Hospital in Smith Center, Monday afternoon.

Mrs. May had been in very poor health for several weeks, and about ten days ago, suffered the injury of a broken hip, in a fall at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Don Hardesty. The injury, combined with her weakened condition from illness, and her advanced age, proved too much for her to withstand.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist Church in Smith Center, and interment made in the Cora cemetery.

Mrs. Tressa May was born in the state of Ohio, July 20, 1840, and departed this life March 7th, 1927, at the hospital in Smith Center, Kansas, Age 86 years, 5 months and 7 days.

She is the last member of a large family to cross the stream of death. At the age of 17 years, she was united in Holy wedlock to Alexander P. May. To this union was born six children, four of whom survive her, two sons and two daughters, M. V. , Mrs. Lina May, James May and Mrs. Margaret Beah, all living in Smith county; two of the children having gone one before, one daughter in infancy, and Frank, who met death accidentally three years ago. There are 22 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren who mourn her loss, besides other near relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. May lived in Smith county since 1886 and had her home in and near Kensington, during most of that time.

She united with the M. E. Church in early life and has been a faithful member of the Church in all her years. Her home was one in which prayer had a large place. The family altar was an institution that was given its rightful place in the home life; the Church was first and Jesus Christ was honored. She died in the faith of her early life, and joy of her life was in serving God.

The funeral was held in the Methodist Church of Smith Center. Burial was in the Cora cemetery. Rev. Roy Allsbury, pastor of the M. E. Church of Smith Center, assisting.

Five of her great grandsons, Claud and Elmer Herdesty, Melvin and Gerald Yenne, Verlin May, and one grandson, Floyd Beach, acted as pallbearers.


March 1908 "Mr. and Mrs. James May and children arrived Wednesday from Smith Center, Kansas, and will reside on their farm in the Reece neighborhood."

June 1909 "James P. May informs us that B. P. Edwards has the finest patch of wheat he has seen in eight years, and it is growing on sod ground."

James cash-claimed a quarter in 22, 3N 48W in 1910, near a number of 1890-1891 cash claimants. His witnesses were Jay Pount, John A. Herron, Frances H. Hammond, and Clarence C. Conover.

In 1910 Yuma County, James is 32, Maud H. 31, with Edna L. 11 and Effie C. 9 both born in Kansas.

In 1920 they're back in Smith County, James and Maude both 41, Effie C. 19, and Georgia A. 8.

James Proctor May 1878-1963 is buried in Smith County, # 126638026, with Maude 1878-1964 # 126637975.

July 24, 1964, Salina Kansas "The funeral for Mrs. Maud May, 90 former resident of Smith Center, will be Monday at 10:30 am at the Nazarene church in Smith Center. Burial will be in the Fairview cemetery. Mrs. May was visiting her May V U79, in Smith county. Effie Maude Dannenbarger, 91, Smith Center, died Monday, April 6, 1992; at the Bethesda Care Center, Smith Center. Mrs. Dannenbarger was born Effie Maude May on Sept. 30, 1900, at Bellaire and was a lifelong resident of- Smith Center. She was a homemaker and a former member of the First Baptist Church and attended the First Christian Church, Smith Center. Her husband, George, died in 1978. Survivors include three sisters, Edna Lotriqe of Lawrence, Georgia Hall of Indianapolis and Esther Wright of Topeka. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Simmons Chapel, Smith Center, the Rev. Victor Schwarz officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.

Graveside funeral services for Edna Louise Lotridge, 99, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Lotridge died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born in a sod house in Smith County on Dec. 6, 1898, to James P. and Maude Bunnell May.

She married James A. Apple on Dec. 5, 1917. He died Nov. 21, 1943. She married Claude W. Lotridge on Oct. 3, 1946. He died on Sept. 28, 1984.

Mrs. Lotridge attended school in Smith Center and Fort Collins, Colo. She graduated as a professional nurse from Larimer County Hospital at Fort Collins and worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital from 1945 until her retirement.

She also worked in the insurance and real estate business with her first husband, James Apple.

She was a longtime resident of Lawrence. She was a member of the Church of Christ, American War Mothers, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Woodlawn Family and Community Education.

She was a graduate of the Menninger Bible Course. She was active in her church. She loved to sew, crochet and knit, making items for rest homes.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Survivors include a son, Arthur Dale Apple of Lancaster, Ohio; two stepchildren, Edmond Lotridge, Belvue, and Arlene Brown, South West City, Mo.; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Wright of Topeka.

Esther Ruth May Wright, 77, Topeka, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at a Topeka hospice house.

Mrs. Wright had worked at the courthouse in Smith Center, in the Supply Depot at Pauline and 40 years for the state of Kansas. She retired from the Kansas Department of Transportation in 1986.

She was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Smith County, the daughter of James P. and Hannah Maude Brunnell May. She attended school at Rising Sun No. 48 and graduated from Smith Center High School in 1942. She moved to Topeka in 1958.

Mrs. Wright was a member of Dover Federated Church and she attended Fairlawn Heights Wesleyan Church in Topeka. She did volunteer work at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. She was a member of Washburn Walkers, Ladies with a Purpose and State Highway Retirees. She also was a 50-year member and past Noble Grand of Dover Rebekah Lodge No. 733.

She married Floyd R. Wright on Sept. 16, 1944, near Keene. He survives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Fairlawn Heights Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Keene Cemetery west of Dover.
