Francis H. and Alvernia (Baker)Hammond



In 1860 Boone County, Indiana, Charley Hammond is 31, Anna 26, Francis H. 9, John E. 8, Mary L. 5, Charley 2, and Isaac four months.

In 1880 Keokuk County, Iowa, F.H. is 29, Alverna 24, farming. He was born in Ohio, Alverna Illinois.

Francis cash-claimed a quarter in 10, 3N 48W in 1890, near a number of other 1890-1891 cash claimants. J.J. Lett described the wheat crop of 2892. "John Grantz and Frank Hammond operated one of the first threshing rigs. Five teams (ten horses) circled the agglomeration of gears that kept the cylinder hunning and the belt-wheeels spiinning by means of a long 'tumbling rod' extending from horsepower to separato, and over which the tired horses wee obliged to step, o stumble, each time they made the cicuit."
In 1900 Yuma County, Frank born Feb 1851 in Ohio, married 27 years to Alvernie H. May 1856 Illinois, have Eva June 1883 Nebraska.

In 1902 Francis filed for a timber claim on a quarter in 19, 3N 47W, witnesses Godfried Itten, Henry Holder, Charles G. Chrismer and Wenzel Blach. That was completed in 1908.

August 1906 "Frank Hammond left this week for his old home in Illinois on business connected with his father's estate.

Clarence Conover and wife spent this week at the ranch of Mrs. Conover's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hammond."

December 1907 "Frank Hammond announces that he will preach at the Denison school house week from Sunday."

1909 "Beulah Hammond of Lanark, Illinois, is visiting at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hammond."

1910 "Mr. Heyer, of Illinois, visited the fore part of the week with the Hammond and Conover families."
In 1910 Yuma County, Francis is still farming 59, with Alverna 54. Daughter Evellyn 27 is married to Clarence Conover, 36, and two of their three children are living. Wanda 5, Vernon 2 were born in Colorado.

November 1912 "Little Wanda Conover is quite seriously ill with whooping cough at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Prank Hammond, north of town."

In 1912 Louis Carls claimed a quarter in 14, 3N 48W, witnesses Frank H. Hammond, Lloyd Titterington, Edward Lensert, and William Mulder, all of Yuma.

November 7, 1913 "At Malden, Massachusetts, on Monday, October 20, occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Baker, mother of Mrs. Frank Hammond, who lives north of Yuma. Mrs. Baker visited here a few years ago, and will be remembered by some of our readers.
Following is the account of her death, taken from the Somerville, Massachusetts, Journal :
Mrs. Elizabeth Baker passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. James H. Butler, 48 Greystone road, Malden, Monday morning, October 20, just a week from the time she was stricken with cerebral hemorrhage.
She was born at Elkridge Landing, Maryland, October 80, 1830, daughter of Edward and Hannah Wilson Herbert, and was a granddaughter of John Wilson, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, who served with the New Jersey troops for six years, 1775 to 1781, and took part in the operations before Quebec at the siege of Yorktown, and was present at tho surrender of Lord Cornwallis.
She was married to George H. Baker at Mount-Morris, Illinois, in 1851. He died eight years ago at Stoneham, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Baker is survived by five children — Mrs. Frank W. Johnson, Stoneham ; Mrs. Frank H. Hammond, of Yuma, Colorado ; Mrs. James H. Butler, of Malden ; Mrs. Francis M. Wilson, of Somerville, and Mrs. Herbert W. Holden, of Somerville.
The funeral took place at Malden Wednesday, at. 2 p. m., Rev. N. B. Fisko, of Stoneham, officiated. The burial was in the family lot in Lindenwood cemetery, Stoneham." "
