Oliver M. Goldsberry



In 1850 Ross County, Ohio, Amos Goldsberry is 42, Anna 41, Goerge 20, Hannah 18, John 16, Melissa 13, Eliza 11, Samuel 8, William 5, and Charity 2.

In 1860 Henry County, Illinois, Sinclair Ross is 45, Lydia 20, Jas 17, Sarah W. 15, Ethalinda 13, Mary J. 10, and S.C. 5.


O. M. GOLDSBERRY, Sheriff of Howard Co., Neb., came to St. Paul in the spring of 1872, and engaged in blacksmithing until January, 1881; then he became sheriff; being elected in the fall of 1881. He was born in Madison Co., Ohio, April 22, 1835; lived in native State until the fall of 1848; moved to Warren Co., Ind., and farmed a year. Family then moved to Mercer Co. Ill., and farmed ten years. He then began blanksmithing; worked three years, and then enlisted in August, 1862, in Company G, One Hundred and Second Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry; participated in battles of Atlanta, Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga to Atlanta; then from the latter city, on march to the sea; and in all the engagements attending the latter campaign. Then through the Carolinas to Raleigh, N. C. Mustered out in Washington, D. C., June 6, 1865. He then returned to Mercer Co., Ill. and resumed his trade until 1868. Moved to Toledo, Tama Co., Iowa, and followed his trade for four years; then to St. Paul, Neb. Married in Henderson, Knox Co., Ill., in 1868, to Miss Lydia A. Ross of latter place. They have two children, Hubert W., and Edward R. Mr. Goldsberry is a member of the Canby Post, No. 8, Grand Army Republic, St. Paul, Neb.

In 1889 Denver, Oliver M. and Hubert W. Goldsberry are both residing at 2031 Welton. Oliver is a blacksmith.

Oliver cash-claimed a quarter in 17, 3N 48W in 1890, near a number of other 1890-1891 cash claimants.

Oliver M. Goldsberry served in the Civil War in Company G of the 102nd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

Oliver M. Goldsberry married Lydia Ann Ross on 26 November 1868 at Henderson, Knox County, Illinois.Lydia was born 4 July 1840 in Ohio, daughter of St. Clair Ross and Lucy Davison.

Oliver and Lydia had two children:Hubert Ward Goldsberry, born 24 November 1869, and married Mrs. Julia Waddell; and, Edward Ross Goldsberry, born 29 October 1878 in Nebraska

Oliver M. Goldsberry and his family appear in the 1870 Federal Census for Toledo, Tama County, Iowa;his household included his nephew, Sylvester Goldsberry.
Oliver M. Goldsberry and his family appear in the 1880 Federal Census for St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska.
Oliver is 45, Lizzie 38, Hubert W. 10, and Edward R. 11.
According to Civil War pension records, Oliver M. Goldsberry was living at Hayes Center, Hayes County, Nebraska, in April 1891 and in January 1892.


In 1900 Chase County, Nebraska, Oliver is the postmaster at Lamar precinct, born April 1834 in Ohio, married 32 years to Lydia A. July 1840 Ohio, have Edward R. Oct 1878 Nebraska - aclerk in a ahardware store.
Oliver M. Goldsberry died 18 June 1901, and is buried in the Lamar cemetery April 22, 1835-June 18, 1901 # 153714920.


His wife, Lydia, died 25 June 1937 at Perris, Riverside County, California, and she is buried there.
Civil War pension records indicate that after Oliver died, Lydia was living at St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska, in July 1901, and at Lamar, Chase County, Nebraska, in July 1902.
Lydia moved to California about 1907, and she appears in the 1910 Federal Census for Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, living in the household of her son, Hubert Ward Goldsberry;she was still living in Los Angeles in October 1916, and she appears in the 1920 Federal Census for Mira Monte, Los Angeles County, California, living in the household of her sister, Nancy Evans.Lydia lived at Perris, Riverside County, California, from about 1933 until her death in 1937.


Lydia is buried in Perris, Riverside County # 40563874 1840-1937.
Hubert Ward Goldsberry and his family appear in the 1900 Federal Census for Precinct 1 South, Phillips County, Colorado;their household included Julia's children from her previous marriage, Edna Waddell and Ray Waddell.Hubert also appears in the 1910 Federal Census for Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California;his household consisted of himself, his mother, and his uncle, James Ross. From the others on the census page, they're living southeast of Holyoke, near the Nebraska state line.

In 1910 Los Angeles, Hubert is divorced, 40 a carpenter born in Iowa. Lydia, his mother, 69 is with him, and his uncle James Ross. 68 Ohio.

In 1920 Los Angeles, Lydia is 79, widowed, living with widowed sister Nancy Evans 81. Nephew Elmer Goldsberry (probably son of George) , 59, widowed, born in Illinois, is with them.
