In 1885 Jefferson County, Nebraska, John Conner is 32, Sarah 33, with Robert 7, Hazzie 6, Lula 3, and John 1.

They're in Jefferson County in 1900, John 46, Sarah 49, Robert M. 27 and his wife Nellie 20, Hazzie 20, John 16, Roy 13, Charles 11, WIllfred 9, and Paul 6.

John Thomas Conner was born in Hardin County, Ohio, on June 12, 1853. The first leg of a westward trek, which was to end in Stratton, Nebraska, was to Porter County, Indiana, where he worked for a year.

In 1875 he joined a Wagon Train of the Quinn Family's (which consisted of: William T. Quinn, James Quinn, Daniel Dick, Wm. Austin and others) to Jefferson County, Nebraska.

In 1876 he and Sarah Quinn (daughter of Robert and Catherine Phillips Quinn) were married, and they farmed near Fairbury until 1902, when they moved to Rawlins County, Kansas. The next year they moved to a farm on Muddy Creek northwest of Stratton, Nebraska. Later they farmed the Fitzgerald place three miles east of town and then retired to love in Stratton.
(Nebraska marriage records have John J. 23, and Sarah Quin, 24, marrying Feb 8, 1877 in Fairbury, Nebraska.)

They were the parents of seven sons and one daughter, namely: Robert Mason, Hazard Elijah “Haze”, John, Roy Merit, Charles Franklin, Wilfred, Paul “Pat” and Lulu (Mrs. U.S. Burks).

Haze, Roy, and Paul were World War I service men and all lived to return home.

Their four younger boys, (Roy, Charles, Wilfred and Paul) attended the University of Nebraska and taught school in and around the Hitchcock County area before picking up where their father left off on his westward trek. Wilfred and his wife, Della, and Lulu and U.S. Burks were the only children of the Conner family to remain in Stratton.

Sarah Quinn Conner obeyed the Gospel in 1870 in Valparaiso, Indiana and John Thomas in 1880 at Fairbury, Nebraska, where they were members if the Silver Creek Church of Christ, located on a plot of land donated by William T and Mary Frances Quinn to the Church in October 31, 1888. The Church was organized as a Christian Church but then the deed and plot of the cemetery was recorded as a Church of Christ.

John T Conner died the 9th of February 1923 and Sarah Quinn Conner passed away the 16th of March 1928. John's funeral was held at the home and Sarah's funeral was held at the Methodist Church. Both are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Stratton, Nebraska.

In 1910 Hitchcock County, Nebraska, John T. Conner is farming, 56, born in Ohio, with Sarah A. 46 Indiana. Roy 22, Charles 20, (both teaching school), Wilfred 18 and Paul 16 were born in Nebraska.

May 21, 1914 "We learn that the E-V ranch was purchased by Mr. Burke of Stratton and the Jack Finn claim by Mr. Conner also of Stratton. We learn that Jack intends building on his home place soon."

John proved up 320 acres in section 18, 3 North 44 West, in 1917. His witnesses were Clyde Cunningham, Ulysses S. Burks, Noble C. Smithson, and Otto S. Finn, all of Wray.

April 1915 "Mr. and Mrs. John Conner of northwest of town, have a little daughter born last Saturday, April 3rd."

1915 "John Conner of Stratton, Nebraska, came up to Wray last Saturday to visit in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Burke and family, who live on the Weatherfield ranch , north of town."

In 1920 Hitchcock County, John and Sarah are alone.

Paul Grant Burks was born August 9, 1916 in Yuma County, dying October 23, 1998.

August 17, 1916 "U. S. Burks, who now owns the old E-V ranch, fourteen miles northwest of town, was in the county seat yesterday, the first time in several weeks. Mr. Burkes says he has been so busy the past ten days taking care of a new son and heir at his home that he scarcely thought of coming to town."

1917 "Miss Anna Klein and Mrs. Goldie Hedman, who are teaching in schools about thirty miles south of town, left Sunday for their work after a few days vacation spent with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Klein and Mr. and Mrs. Burks, of north of Wray."

Ulysses S. Burks proved up 320 acres in sections 13 and 24, 3N 45W in 1917.

In 1920 Hitchcock County, Ulysses is 45, born in Missouri, with Lulu 37 Nebraska. Gladys 17 an, Grace 12, and John 10 were born in Kansas, Lillie 8 an, Lulu 6, and Paul 3 in COlorado, Jean 2 in Nebraska.

Lulu is buried in Hitchcock County 1881-1964 # 142650976.

Lulu Conner, daughter of John Thomas and Sarah Conner, was born November 6, 1881 in Jefferson County, near Fairbury, Nebraska. She grew to womanhood in that vicinity and on November 29, 1899 was united in marriage to Ulysses Samuel Burks. To this union ten children were born, four sons and six daughters. Her husband, two sons and three grandsons preceded her in death.
In 1901 they came to Atwood, Kansas and later were early settlers on a farm in Rawlins County near McDonald, Kansas. In 1909 they moved to Rifle, Colorado and spent four years in that vicinity. From here they moved to a homestead at Wray, Colorado. In 1916 they returned to Stratton, Nebraska and were farmers in this community. After the death of her husband in 1945 she moved into town and has made it her home since.
She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, having united with her Savior in baptism September 25, 1949.
She was always interested in the community and has been an active member of the Garden Club, Stratton Woman's Club and M.G.R. and Goldenrod Circle Clubs.
She leaves to mourn her passing eight children: John Burks, Gladys Pierce, Grace Cushing, all of Stratton; Lillie Jones, Cambridge, Idaho; Lulu Bailey, Phoenix, Ariz.; Paul Burks, Stratton; Jean Carse, Palisade; and Ruby Rains, Trenton, Nebraska; thirty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, John Conner of Long Beach, Calif., Charles Conner of Pryor, Okla. and Paul Conner of Los Angeles, Calif; nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

"Lulu V. Bailey passed away peacefully on February 12, 2010.
Born in Rifle, Colorado on November 29, 1913. A long time resident of Ahwatukee, Arizona and member of the Arizona Quilter's Guild.
Predeceased by her husband, Willis, and granddaughter, Kendra.
She is survived by her children, Janet, Phyllis, Ann, Sharla, Kathy and Bill, and their spouses; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be at Resthaven Park, 4310 E. Southern Ave. in Phoenix on Tuesday February 16th from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Graveside services will be February 17th at 10 a.m., at Resthaven Park also."

" Jean C. Carse, 88, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at the Cambridge Manor, Cambridge, Nebraska.
She was born in Stratton, May 25, 1919, to Ulysses S. and Lulu (Conner) Burks. She attended and graduated from Stratton High School. She went to Kearney State College where she took normal training, she then returned to the area and taught rural school.
She taught elementary school for 32 years in Hayes Center.
She was united in marriage to Leon B. Carse in June of 1945. The couple made their home on a farm between Hayes Center and Palisade. He preceded her in death in 1994. She then moved to McCook and lived at Highland Park.
She was a Pink Lady at Community Hospital in McCook, a member of the United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, Retired Teachers, Jolly Jane's Extension Club and held many offices in the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon; four brothers, Paul and Johns Burks and two in infancy; three sisters, Gladys Pierce, Grace Cushing, and Lilly Jones.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan and husband, Gene Witte of Cambridge; two sons, James and wife, Elizabeth Carse of Monroe, Ga., and Bruce Carse of Girdwood, Alaska; two sisters, Ruby Rains of Stratton and Lulu Bailey of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. (CST) at the Palisade Cemetery. "
