Leon Clinton Clifton and Buena Mae (Masters) Clifton, Laird

One descendant said Leon was called "Baldy."

In 1900 Williams County, Ohio, Leon, born January 1882 in Indiana. is with John and Mary, farmers.   Leon and brother Selva May 1870, Ohio, are day laborers.  Another brother Ora, Oct 1886, Ohio, is a farm laborer, and there's another brother Noel July 1887.

Buena Masters was the daughter of Charles and Isabel (Kinghorn) Masters.

Charles -Jan 15, 1857-Nov 25, 1921 and Isabelle E. Masters Feb 26, 1859-Oct 7, 1944 are buried in Indianola Cemetery, Red Willow County, Nebraska.

In 1910 Yuma County - on the same page as the Daum, Post, and Odell families, Leon is farming, with wife Burna 21, married three years.  Burna and daughter Mary J. 1, both born in Nebraska.

Leon proved up a parcel in 26 and 35, 3N 43W in 1916. 

1912 "The Misses Macy and Elsie Teel, of Indianola, Nebr., arrived in Wray Saturday.  They were met by their brother, Walter, who resides north of Laird."

1913 Walter E. Teel of Laird was a witness for Harry H. Halley's claim in 4N 42W.

1914 Ami C. Teel of Laird was a witness for the claim of Albert Sampson for land in 2N 42W.

1915 "Miss Alta Sampson and Ami C. Teel were married in McCook Tuesday and are at home to friends in their homestead north of Laird."


August 26, 1915 "Ami Teel barely escaped a serious injury Tuesday morning. When driving his team in the barn one of the pair kicked him with both feet, bruising his arm and breaking a rib."

1917 Laird "Mr. and Mrs. Ami Teel are visiting relatives in Nebraska."  "Ammi Cutter Teel" of Alvin registered for WWI, saying he was born December 3, 1891 in Indianola, Nebraska.

1917 "A.C. Teel, north of Laird, has disposed of his 320 acre farm to Charley Desclemns, who gets immediate possession.  Mr. Teel will leave after corn husking time for Nebraska where he has leased a section for the coming year."

1918 "Miss Mina Sampson is visiting her sister, Mrs. Ann Teel in eastern Nebraska."

Mina was dau. of Albert & Georgia Sampson. After her mother died when she was about 5, the family moved from Hitchcock Co. NE, to a farm north of Parks in Dundy County. Mina was sister to Ross Elijah, Alta May (Teel), Earl Mason, Bert Thomas, and half-sister to J. Roberta.



June 6, 1918 "Miss Mina Sampson is visiting her sister, Mrs. Arm Teel in eastern Nebraska."
She married 10 Nov 1925 to Joseph Cyrus Graham, son of Oliver and Lillie Graham of Wray, CO. Wray was just across the state line from her home. Mina and Joe lived lived in Wray, and had one known daughter, Barbara.

Mina Oct 24, 1904 - Feb 5 1996 is buried in Wray

He registered in McCook, saying he was born January 19, 1882, and was a fireman for the CB&Q RR - nearest relative Buna May Clifton.

In 1920 Leon, a railroad brakeman,  and Buena are  in Red Willow County, Nebraska, with Mary, son Dekare 6 born in Colorado,  and Ruth 2, born in Nebraska.

Mary married John A. Teel, and they're in McCook in 1930 with nine-month Ruth L.   They moved to Denver - in 1951 John is president of a labor union - buried in Olinger Highland 42949822

John A. Teel in 1910 is 3, with brother  Ammi C. Teel  in Frontier County, Nebraska - in 1900 Frontier County Walter E. is 13 - so he's also a brother - homesteading a few miles north in 4N 42W in 1913.


June 6, 1912 "The Misses Macy and Elsie Teel, of Indianola, Nebr., arrived in Wray Saturday. They were met by their brother, Walter, who resides north of Laird."
October 21, 1915 " Robert Larington has purchased the Walter Teel place north of Laird which joins Mr. Larington's home place. Mr. Teel is living in Canada."

In 1916 and 1921 Walter is in the Canadian census.

Walter E. Teel is working for the WPA, 52 and Cecilia F. 44 Teel, in Dundy County Nebraska in 1940, with Hrold E. 14.

He's buried in Payette County, Idaho 1888-1963, with Ceceilia Francis (Aylward) Teel 1893-1984. Walter died in Malheir County, Oregon.

In 1930 McCook, Red Willow County, Leon is a locomotive fireman.  With them are Devere L. 16, Chester C. 2, son Merle, 7, and Ruth R. 12.

Devere L. Clifton - Sept 15, 1913- March 7, 1993 is buried in Fort Logan, Denver.

Doloris Elizabeth Clifton of McCook died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 83 years old.

Doloris was born on Jan. 27, 1924, at McCook to Louis John and Susan Anna (O'Dea) Colling. She graduated from Red Willow High School in 1941, and St. Francis College of Nursing in Grand Island in 1947.

On Aug. 24, 1948, she married Merle Fulford Clifton. To this union five children were born. They made their home in the McCook community where Doloris was a busy mother and homemaker. She was also a nurse for St. Catherine's and Community Hospital for 37 years.

Doloris was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a Cub and Boy Scout Leader and volunteered for the collection of Muscular Dystrophy Association. She was instrumental in organizing disaster drills through the hospital for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Louis and Susan Colling; her husband, Merle Clifton in 2001; three brothers, Bernard, Donald and George Colling; and two sisters, Lucille Hill and Mildred Stratman.

Survivors include her two daughters, Patricia Clifton and Jo and husband, Bert Klein, all of Dallas, Texas; three sons, Roy Clifton and wife, Joan of Ravenna, Ray Clifton of North Platte and Garry Clifton and wife, Jennifer of Park City, Utah; two brothers, Joseph Colling and wife, Bernadine of Onalaska, Wis., and Harold Colling of Wichita, Kan.; one sister, Marge and husband, Gene Malleck of McCook; five grandchildren, Emma, Clinton and wife, Brienne, Brecken, Joshua and Jonathan; and one great-grandchild, Sebastian.

Virginia Lee Clifton died Wednesday (July 12, 2006) at Hillcrest Nursing Home.  She was 83 years old.
 
She was born Nov. 15, 1922, to E. Carl and Bessie (Austin) Macy in Marion.  She graduated from McCook High School in 1940 and McCook Junior College in 1973.
 
She married Chester C. Clifton on Dec. 1, 1940 at St. Francis, Kan.  To this union, three children were born, Charles L., Chester A., and Bess C.
 
She was an excellent mother and homemaker, and enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.
 
She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband Chester C. on Dec. 20, 1969; a granddaughter; her parents, Carl and Bessie; and two sisters, Ella Gallagher and Cleo Childers.
 
Survivors include her sons, Charles L. Clifton of Albuquerque, N.M., Chester A. Clifton and wife, Judy of Bayard; daughter, Bess C. Gull and husband, Randy of McCook; grandchildren, Pamela Lawson and husband, Ray of Hampton, Craig Clifton and wife, Kerri of Thornton, Colo., Meghan Gull of Lincoln, Moriah Gull of Kearney, Miranda Gull of McCook; great-grandchildren, Cody, Matthew, Nathan and Taylor; and sister, Marion Mosher of Minatare.
 
Memorials may be given in her name.
 
Memorial services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on Tuesday (July 18th) at 9 a.m.

"I have had several occasions to be very proud of McCook and those folks who are responsible for the McCook Service canteen.

"The typical conversation starts, 'Where are you from buddy?' The answer may be New York, California, Georgia, Maine, Pennsylvania, or any of the 48 states.

"When the other soldier asks me, I say 'McCook, Nebraska' my chest swelling out almost popping off a couple of buttons (which I'd have to sew on myself). Then the other soldier often says, 'McCook, Nebraska? I remember that town. Some nice ladies from the town were at the station and gave us fellows on the train a lot of stuff like magazines, candy, fruit, cigarettes and other things that we really appreciated.'

"It would surprise you folks to know how many fellows I have contacted that have said that very thing to me."

The above quote comes from a letter to the editor in the Dec. 30, 1942, Gazette --sent by Pvt. Chester C. Clifton, Squadron A, Aerial Gunnery School, Wendover Field, Utah. He also added, "You probably never have traveled on a train without knowing your destination. That's the way we all travel."
