Charles F. Chartier, Laird
In 1900 Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, Charles, born February 1894 in Oklahoma, is with parents Charles May 1862 and Hattie M. July 17, 1868, both Illinois. Siblings are Rosana Feb 1885, Curtis I June 1887, Meredith Aug 1889 - all Kansas, and Emmett May 1900 Oklahoma.
They're in Cloud County, Kansas in 1905 - Charles 42, Hattie M. 36, Rose 20, Corliss 17, Minnie 15, Frank 11, Emmet 4, and Arthur 1.
In 1910 Charles - no occupation - and Hattie are in Cloud County, Kansas, with Charles, and Emmit F. 9 and Arthur L. 6. Hattie has had six children - all living.
Charles Frank Chartier, Junior married Bertha Spellman June 15, 1915.
Charles proved up two quarters in 6, 3N 43W in 1919.

Chartier was born July 18, 1896, to George and Minnie
Spellman. She died June 27, 1994, at the Renotta Health Care
Center in Wray, Colorado, at the age of 97. She was born
near Valentine, Nebraska, in Cherry County where she and her
brother, Jess, fished in the nearby Niobrara River as small
children. She traveled
with her family by covered wagon to Maywood, Nebraska, at an
early age to make their home. When she was 13, they moved to
Alvin, Colorado, and she lived in Yuma County the rest of
her life.
She married Frank Chartier June 15, 1915, and to this union 12 children were born. One baby boy, Charles Franklin, died at birth. Mrs. Chartier was baptized in the Church of Christ July 18, 1969. She was a devoted wife and mother while raising her 11 children. Not one stick of wood or corncob was wasted in the cook stove to bake the five loaves of bread, a pan of rolls and, of course, a pan of cinnamon rolls for the family to enjoy. She fed her family well with hard work and what little they had The chickens they raised and the canned food from the garden were for the winter months ahead. She always made sure the turkeys they raised were sold to buy Christmas gifts and no one was left out. She allowed herself the pleasure in the evening to milk her cow, which she named "High Legs," while Frank and the kids milked the rest of the cows. She and Frank were active in 4-H for the children and they never missed a county fair or rodeo. In later years she watched her boys ride in the rodeos and she was quick to tell them if they didn't ride real well. Her humor lasted all of her life and she enjoyed every minute of it. She always did her best to make everyone around her happy. She used to say, "It's hard to get old, but if you don't get old, you have to die young." She took pleasure in belonging to the Royal Neighbor's Club and was proud to be a member of the Laird Community Club. That was a very important part of her life. She was grandma to all, and anyone was welcome in her home. No one ever left her house hungry. Even the stray cats and dogs knew they would be fed at Grandma's. The kids all knew where to go on Halloween as she insisted on making 100 popcorn balls each year. She looked forward to the children's coming. Her good deeds were many and after each one she would say, "I want to put another jewel in my crown." Her husband preceded her in death May 17, 1961. She was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother, a son in infancy, two daughters, Selma Jean Brandner and Leah Madge Haun, and four grandsons. She is survived by nine children, including Emmett of Fort Collins, Colorado, Keith of Laird, Bill of Longmont, Colorado, Everna 'Tude" Guernsey of Benkelman, Nebraska, Bob of Laird, Don of North Platte, Nebraska, Phyllis Lowe of Haigler, Nebraska, Shirley Trembley of Chandler, Arizona, and Dallas of Benkelman; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren: 16 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, E.T. "Bud" Spellman of Wray, and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 1, 1994, at the Spellman-Schmidt-Baucke Funeral Chapel in Wray with the Rev. Tim Swenson officiating. Interment was at Grandview Cemetery in Wray with Spellman-Schmidt-Baucke Mortuaries of Wray and Yuma in charge of arrangements. |
1915 "Mrs. H.M. Chartier and little son, who have been visiting Mrs. Jess Shay at Laird, returned to their home at Miltonville, Kansas Thrusday(sic) afternoon." Jesse E. Shay is in the 1910 Yuma County census, 30, born in Kansas, with Rose W. 25, Kansas, with Kenneth 2, Kansas and Alene three months, Colorado.
So Rose W. must be the R Sana in 1900 Kingfisher County, sister of Charles Frank Chartier.

1917 Laird news "Mr. Shay moved his household effects to his homestead near Eckley Thursday. Mrs. Shay and Glenn will join him soon." 1919 Eckley items "Mrs. John Shay and son, Glen, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Craig, at McDonald, Kansas."
Jess and Rose are in Cloud County in 1920, no occupation, with Kenneth 12, Alene 10, and Geneva 2.
Jess and Rose are in Cloud County in 1930, too, with the three kids, and now H.M. Chartier, mother, is with them.
In 1940 Jesse - a senior foreman for the CCC - and Rose E are alone in Morris County, Kansas - they had been in Cloud County in 1935.
There's a Jesse E. Shay recorded in Miltonvale cemetery, with no date of birth or death - and a Geneva Shay - also no birth or death.

Frances Alene Shay, born Oct 8, 1909 in Laird, married Harlan Abel Nelson in 1934 and died October 28, 1971 in Multnomah County, Oregon. She and Harlan are buried in Portland. 98311884

Charles Franklin Chartier registered with a Wray address, saying he was born February 22, 1893 in Hennessey, Oklahoma, and had a wife and child.
In 1920 Yuma County he's Frank C. Chartier, married to Bertha, 23, and they have Madge L. 5 Colorado, and Emmet G. 1. Nebraska. Frank is a drayman for a store.
In 1930 Yuma County Charles is farming. They have Lea M. 13 Colorado, George E. 12, Nebraska, Keith 9, William R. 7, Everna M. 4, Robert L. 3, and Selma 2 - the last five born in Colorado.
"Frank" is farming in 1940 Yuma County. Emmet is a farm laborer, Keith a common laborer for the SCS, William no occupation. Everna 14, Robert 13, Selma 11, Donald 8, Phyllis 6, and Shirley 4 are all born in Colorado.
| Then we had a 1951 or 52 Kaiser. Daddy bought it from Vic Stasser, who was the dealer in Haigler for Kaisers, Frazers and Henry J’s. One icy day, we were attempting to get up the hill on the old highway 27 and were slipping and sliding when Frank Chartier came over the hill and hit us. Luckily, both cars were creeping along so no one was hurt, but the car was totaled. We got another Kaiser instead of fixing the wrecked one. About this time, my grandparents had a 1950 Frazer and I believe my uncle Lloyd Crabtree was driving one too. He might be the C. Frank Chartier 1893-1961 buried in Ogallala, Nebraska, and Bertha is probably the Bertha A. (Spellman) Chartier in the Wray cemetery - July 18, 1896- June 27, 1994.
One tree said Charles Franklin Chartier, Jr married Inger Larsen July 29, 1960 at Torrington, Wyoming. In 1984 Mrs. Inger Chartier of Torrington was a living sister of Rose (Larsen) Petersen of Hooper, Nebraska. Inger O. Chartier was buried January 31, 1987 in Ogallala.
It says Leah Madge was born 12/27/1916, married Marcilos Haun and died 12/23/1977,
| Jack Haun, 62, of Grover, CO, died December 11, 2002 at his home.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Jack was
born on October 22, 1940 in Wray, CO the son of Marcellous Alwin Haun
and Leah Madge (Chartier) Haun. He was raised in Wray, CO and had
lived in Grover for the last few months. Jack graduated from Laird High
School in Laird, CO in 1957. He worked for several construction
companies in Colorado and New Mexico for 25 years until he retired in
2000.Jack enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and hunting and was a bull
rider in his younger years. Jack's parents Marcellous and Leah
Haun precede him in death. He is survived by his sons Robert and Chris
Haun, his daughter Kimberly McCleskey, and 5 grandchild.

| Keith Chartier began riding broncs in rodeos at the age of 15 for $1 to $2 a head, called “Mount Money” in the rodeos. He earned $43 at the Cheyenne Wells Rodeo when he was 17. When he was 20, he went to California where they paid more money, and he had a jackpot rodeo every weekend. After being there for two years, he was drafted into the Army. He spent the next three years in the Air Force as a tail gunner on a B-17. Keith flew 50 missions over Germany, Romania and other countries. He was a T-Sgt. and was awarded the Air Meal with two Oak Leaf clusters. After being discharged, he traveled coast to coast rodeoing. He won first in some and placed in some, riding bareback, saddle broncs and bulls, and even bulldogged a few times. He met his wife in California. |

3/15/2008 at Benkelman. BENKELMAN -- Everna May "Tude" Gurnsey, 83, died Friday (March 15, 2008) at Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman. She was born in Yuma County, Colo., on June 8, 1924, to Charles Frank and Bertha (Spellman) Chartier. She attended country school near her home for many years. During World War II, she moved to California, where she worked in the factories and helped support the war effort. She later returned to the area. In June of 1945, she married Clarence "Max" Guernsey. Together they farmed and ranched in Dundy County for the rest of their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Bertha Chartier; her husband, Max; brother, George; and sisters, Madge and Jean. Survivors include her children, Dick Guernsey and wife, Connie of Parks and Cheryl Bentley and husband, Dick of Benkelman; sisters, Phyllis Lowe of Crete and Shirley Trembley of Globe, Ariz.; brothers, Dallas Chartier and wife, Sharon of Benkelman, Bob Chartier and wife, Masie and Keith Chartier and wife, Margie, all of Laird, Colo., Bill Chartier and wife, JoAnn of Longmont, Colo., and Don Chartier of North Platte; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A graveside service with inurnment will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m., (MDT) at the Benkelman Cemetery with Rev. Brian Fong officiating. |
| C. Max Guernsey, 88,
died Thursday (Sept. 8, 2005) at Dundy County Hospital in
Benkelman. He was born Sept.
13, 1916, to Clarence and Mabel (Taylor) Guernsey in Holyoke,
Colo. He joined the U.S.
Army in 1941 and served as a tech sergeant in India and
Pakistan. He received an honorable discharge on Sept. 1, 1945.
He married Everna "Tude" Chartier on June 13, 1946. The couple made their home in Dundy County. He spent his youth working on ranches, which he parlayed into a career. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mabel Guernsey, and four sisters, Audrey, Daisy, Evelyn and Wilma. Survivors include his wife, Tude Gurensey of Benkelman; daughter, Cheryl Bentley and husband, Dick of Benkelman; son, Dick Guernsey and wife, Connie of Parks; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Services were today at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with the Rev. Brian Fong officiating. Interment with military honors followed services at the Benkelman Cemetery. |

| Maurice C. Brandner, 84, of Millsboro, Delaware, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, in the Atlantic Shores Nursing Center, Millsboro. He was 84. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Selma Jean Chartier Brandner in 1992 and a son, Tony Brandner in 1994. Mr. Brandner is survived by three sons, Frank Brander and Rick Brandner both of Millsboro, Larry Brandner of Lincoln; three daughters, Judy McGinnis of Delmar, Ruth Lewis of Dagsboro, and Teresa Lockerman of Millsboro; a brother, Harvey Brandner of Seaford; a sister, Seatta Murray of Clarksville; 22 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Services were, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro.. Pastor Bob Boyce officiated.. Burial was in Millsboro Cemetery |

| Robert Lynn (Bob) Chartier was
born in the Alvin district north
of Wray, Feb. 7, 1927 to Bertha
(Spellman) and Frank Chartier
the sixth of 11 children. He attended country schools, helped break horses and farm the farms where they lived and all daily chores. Bob loved animals and rodeo was his passion, he started going to some county fairs riding saddle broncs, bareback horses and bulls. He joined Professional Rodeo Association in 1945 going to Elk City, Oklahoma working for Butler Brothers Rodeo Company and riding bulls profession-ally, winning 2nd in the I.R.A. for the world in 1951 and placing high in the national standing throughout his career. God gave Bob many gifts. He loved people, his god, and the rodeo, was a self taught sculptor, and drawing was a pastime. He lived life to the fullest. He married Laura Mae Brown on Sept. 4, 1949, celebrating 60 years of marriage, they were blessed with four loves in his life. Scott Lynn, Jan. 14, 1952, David Joe, June 8, 1953, Jeffery Kim, Sept. 9, 1954, and Codi Carol, Nov. 9, 1959. He always had horses for them to help break, cows to milk, hay to put up, coyote hunting, cooking and teach-ing them to work and then going to their functions they chose in life. Preceding him in death were his parents, Bertha and Frank Chartier, daughter-in-law, Cindy Lawson Chartier, brother, Emmett Chartier, and sisters, Madge Haun, Everna Gunersy and Jean Brandner. He is survived by his wife, Maisie, children, Scott and Brenda, Joe, Jeff and Dixie, Codi and Tom Cass, 11 grandchildren, Sabrina and Dustin Chartier, Samantha and Eldon Van Vickle, Jessi and Cody Holmes, Brooke Chartier, Sara and Bryan Chacon, Ann, Jake and Luke Clouse, Misty and Darin Rousselle, Willy and Kassidy Clouse, nine great-grandchildren, DeVonte Chartier, Trae Nunnley, Lexie, Trinitee and Ray-Vonn Holmes and David Chacon, Owen Scheafer, Kody and Beau Clouse.
