Davis and Frances E. (Sharer) Murphy, Mildred




In 1860 Somerset County, Pennsylvania, Samuel Sharer is a carpenter, 46, with Catherine 39. Margaret is 19, Amanda 12, Charles 6, "Franklin" 3, and Albert six months.

In 1870 Stark County, Illinois, Samuel and Jerusha Sharer are farming, both 51. They and Charles 16 were born in Pennsylvania, Frances C. 12 adn Harriet 10 in Illinois.


In 1880 Poweshiek County, Iowa, Benjamin F. Sharer is 29, and his parents S.C. and Jerusha 61 are with him.

Jennie's sister Sarah, born Nov 1, 1842, died on July 31, 1910, buried in Malcom, Iowa # 31677316.

Benjamin F. Sharer 1851-1923 is buried in Poweshiek County, # 88413106 ""
Grinnell Iowa, March 11, 1930 "Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Sharer were held at her late home, 1022 Spring St. at two o'clock this afternoon, conducted by the Rev. George Blagg. The hymns, "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," "Rock of Ages" and "My Saviour," first of all were sung by Mrs. Roscoe Dempster and Mr. Davis Green. Mrs. Sharer had been in poor health for some time and during the last few weeks had suffered intensely. It was characteristic of her to carry her own cares and this characteristic showed itself in the fortitude in which she bore her sufferings. Mrs. Sharer was a life long member of the Methodist Episcopal church and found great comfort in trusting the promises of her Savior. Her relatives and friends sincerely mourn the loss of a good woman. Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Edward and Mary C. Jones, was born August 11, 1850 at Walsall, Staffordshire, England. When she was fourteen months old her parents came to America and located near Pittsburgh, Penn. Following the Civil War, in which Mr. Jones served the full time, the family came to Iowa and lived at New Sharon. Mrs. Sharer came to Grinnell to live before her first marriage and has kept her residence here since that time. On May 17, 1873 she was united in marriage to August Lootens, who died in 1883. Three sons, Edward J.; Charles L.; and William D. Lootens, were born to them. All are deceased. On November 29, 1899 she married B.F. Sharer, who died July 1, 1925. The near relatives who mourn her decease are, two stepsons, Arthur R. Sharer, Grinnell, Cecil C. Sharer, Marshalltown, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jessie Lootens, Denver, Col.; six grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Bashford, Clarksville, Iowa, Mrs. Martha Squire, Grinnell and one brother, W.D. Jones of New Sharon, Iowa. Burial was in Hazelwood. The following served as pallbearers: Cecil and Arthur Sharer, Sam Murphy, Austin Peters, Archie Kiester and Charley Barnhardt.

Charles E. Sharer 1853-1926 is also buried in Poweshiek County # 87123756.


Samuel Cole Sharer 1820-- # 88412792 and Jerusha (Smith) Sharer 1820-1882 #88412878 are buried in Poweshiek County, Iowa.

In 1880 Poweshiek County, Iowa, Davis Murphy is farming, 31, with Francis E. 20. Samuel D. is nin months old.

In 1900 Poweshiek County, Davis is running a general store, 51, with Francis 42, Samujel 20, Palmer 19, and Margaret 4.

In 1910 Yuma County, Davis Murphy is farming 51, born in Canada, married 32 years to Francis Evaline 52 born in Illinoios. Charles 29 and Margaret 14 were born in Iowa.

January 4, 1912 "Mrs. Murphy and daughter, Miriam, of southwest of Vernon, who had been visiting at Fort Collins a few weeks, returned home to Wray Monday night, going out to their home Tuesday. They were guests of Mrs. Murphy's nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Funk while in town."
December 11, 1913 " Palmer Murphy and sister, Miss Marion, returned Monday morning from a visit with relatives and friends near Grinnell, Iowa, and went out to the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Murphy, of southwest of Vernon."

October 1914 "Mrs. David Murphy, Mrs. Jennie Funk and daughter, Miss Jennie, of south of Eckley, were Yuma visitors yesterday."
March 18, 1915 "One of our most estimable old friends, Mr. Davis Murphy, had a stroke of paralysis last Friday morning, and is in bad shape, but is reported some better at this writing."

December 1915 " Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, of Mildred, were visiting for several days last week with Miss Jennie Funk, our primary teacher, who is a niece of Mrs. Murphy."

February 1917 "Palmer Murphy of Mildred was seen on the streets of Vernon on Sunday, and some are asking why the attraction? We don't know; ask Palmer."

1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Davis Murphy were Vernon shoppers on Tuesday of this week."

Elmer Kimport is in Decatur County, Iowa in 1900, with Martin 56 born in Pennsylvania and Augusta 50 born in Illinois. Charles E.21, William F. 18, Mamie 15, twins Elmer and Elma both 11.

March 22, 1906 Decatur County, Iowa. "John MCalla visited Elmer Kimport Sunday."

MARTIN KIMPORT, one of the highly respected citizens and old soldiers of Leon, passed away at his home in this city about noon on Monday August 9th, at the age of seventy years, four months, and five days.

MR. KIMPORT was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, March 4, l845. When he was three years of age his parents moved to Iowa, locating in Cedar County, where his boyhood days were spent.In l863, when he was a lad of eighteen he enlisted in the services of his country in Co. A. l3th Iowa Vol. Inf., and served with honor until the close of the war.He was with General Sherman on his "March to the Sea," and during the last six months of his service was color bearer of his regiment. When the Union Forces were successful, he had the honor of placing the Stars and Stripes on the Capitol of South Carolina.
December 2, l868, he was united in marriage to MISS AUGUSTA REIFENSTAHL, at Vinton, Benton County, Iowa. To this union were born nine children, five daughters and four sons, all of whom with the widowed mother survive him.The children are: MRS. EMMA DEXTER, of Des Moines; MRS. NETTIE LAUGHLIN, of Lineville; MRS. EDITH JOHNSTON, of Pleasanton; CHARLES E., of Manchester; WALTER, of Des Moines; WILLIAM, MAMIE and MRS. ELLA CAMPBELL, of Leon, and ELMER, of Vernon, Colorado, the last two named being twins. All of the children were present at his funeral except ELMER and MRS. DEXTER, who were unable to be present.The death of MR. KIMPORT makes the first break in the family circle.In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by twenty-two grandchildren.

MR. KIMPORT and family came to Decatur County in l895 and located on a farm in Morgan Township, removing later to a farm in Eden Township, and when his health would no longer permit active work, he moved to Leon five years ago, where he continued to reside until his death.For a number of years after the close of the war he taught school.In l890 he united with the M.E. Church, and always took an active interest in the church and its affairs. Some years ago on account of not being able to attend the church of his choice, he transferred his membership to the East Eden Church of Christ.His health had been gradually failing for several years.

Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Guy J. Fansher, Pastor of the Leon M.E. Church, the services at the grave being in charge of the G.A.R. Post, of which he was a member.The floral offerings were many and beautiful, testifying to the high esteem in which he was held.Interment was in the Leon Cemetery. The sorrowing wife and children have the sympathy of many friends in their great affliction.

Elmer Kimport married Margaret Murphy on May 31, 1917, recorded in Yuma County.
June 7, 1917 "License to marry was issued Thursday, May 31, to Elmer Kimport of Vernon, and Miss Margaret M. Murphy, of near Mildred."

Elmer Kimport was slightly wounded in combat in October 1918.

In 1920 Yuma County, Charles Murphy is farming, single 39, born in Iowa. Francis E. 61 is widowed. With them is Elmer L. 30 and Margaret M. 23 "Kinsport", both born in Iowa.

Elmer was president of School District # 54 in 1922.

November 29, 1923
In October and December 1923, the Yuma County commissioners paid Mary E. Staininger $60 for caring for Mrs. Frances Murphy.

In 1930 Yuma County, Elmer 40 and Margaret 34 are farming.

Elmer Kimport - 1889-1936 is buried in Eckley, # 53005908. The headstone application, submitted by the Service Officer at Yuma, said he was a private in Co. D.., 100th Infantry, dying March 28, 1936.


Elmer was in Decatur County, Iowa in 1900 and 1910. His parents are Martin 1845-1915 # 122640214 and Augusta 1850-1921 # 6427209.

Margaret Miriam "Kimpert" married Guy Raymond Powers on Feb 8, 1937, recorded in Denver.

Samuel Davis Murphy is buried in Poweshiek County # 81714031.
"Samuel David Murphy who passed away last Friday at the age of 62 was the first born child of David and Eva Murphy.
The parents were members of the Ewart Methodist Church where their children also received their religious training.
During his youth in Ewart and throughout his life he proved himself an honest and industrious man.
He was married to Weltha Nevada Fields on December 12, 1900 at Jacobs, Iowa. Nine children were born to them.
He was a devoted father and always faithful in his efforts to provide for the comfort and welfare of his family.
After a lingering illiness he died at the St Francis Hospital in Grinnell, Iowa.
The children are; Farold, Maurice, Emory, Maxine, Alice, Eva, Irene, Iceline and Charles.  "
Miriam Margaret Powers, born about 1896, died in Vancouver, Washington Nov 12, 1959, spouse of HGuy R. Poweres.

In 1940 Marion County, Oregon, Miriam and Guy are farming. They were in Greeley, Colorado in 1935.
She's buried in Vancouver # 147442565, with Guy 1886-1967.

Charles Palmer Murpohy was born in Malcom Township, Poweshiek County in 1881 to David Murphy.

In 1930 Yuma County, Charles is a farm hand, 50, born in Iowa.

Charles Murphy is in Marion County, Oregon in 1940, too, farming, 59, single. He was in Yuma County in 1935.
Charles is buried in the City View Cemetery, Salem Oregon 1880-1954.
March 4, 1954 "Charles P. Murphy In this city March 3 at the age ot 73 years. Survived by a sister, Mrs. Guy Powers, Vancouver, Wash. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Announcement of services will be made later by the Howell-Edwards Chapel. "
