GEORGE'S FAMILY

Joseph's first wife was Nancy, then he married Jane (Cruikshan 1814-1863 # 40346283.

Joseph 1805-1867 is buried in Delaware County # 40346288, with Nancy (Longwell) Leonard 1806-1848 # 40346432.

George served in Company F, 16th Iowa Infantry from November 1864 to July 1865.

In 1870 Iowa County, George is farming, 33, born in Ohio, with Sarah A. 29, Mary A. 9, Anna L. 7, and Herman 4.

In 1880 Iowa County, George is 45, Sarah 39, Mary 18, Anna 16, Scott 13, Charles 7, and Duane 4.

In 1885 Iowa County, George is 48, Sarah A. 43, Anna 21, Herman S. 12, CHARLES J. 11, John D. 2, and "Reva J." 1
George W. Leonard cash-claimed a quarter in section 24, 1S 44W, Yuma COunty, in 1890. This was about ten miles south of Wray.
Then in 1893 he proved up a quarter in section 1, 2S 44W, about three miles south of his other claim.

In 1895 George W. Leonard of Wray was granted an original pension.

August 1898 "C. F. Leonard of Claremont. Colo.,(LIKELY THE AREA NEAR STRATTON, KIT CARSON COUNTY) son of G, W. Leonard, was over visiting Wednesday."


August 1899 Wray, Colorado "Mrs. O. D. Mercer's uncle, J. H. Leonard of Lincoln, Neb., brother of G. W. Leonard made a short visit here this week, and went on to Colorado Springs, where they will meet G. W."

Charles F. Leonard is in 1900 Kit Carson County, born April 1873 in Iowa, a sheepherder with his father George W. Leonard 64 born in Ohio.

May 1901 Wray "G. W. Leonard sends the Times over to the boys at Claremont. Says they want to hear the news from here every week."

February 1902 Wray, Colorado "B. D. Prentice purchased a bunch of cattle from G. W. Leonard the last of the week."

December 1903 "H. S. and C. F. Leonard, prominent Arickaree farmers shipped cattle to South Omaha Monday night."
So Charles had moved from Kit Carson County.

May 1904 "George Leonard and Miss Veva were trading in Wray Saturday."

January 1905 "G. W. Leonard of south of town, is visiting relatives in Colorado Springs."

George is buried in Wray, Colorado 1836-1905 # # 80711264, with Sarah 1841-1895 # 81586599.

April 7, 1905 "George W. Leonard was born at Delaware, Ohio, December 28, l836, and received his education there. After arriving at maturity he chose farming as a profession, which he followed successfully throughout a long and useful life. He selected as the field for his beginning the state of Iowa where he located in 1856, and it was here that he met, and married Miss Sarah A. Ewing in 1860. To this union was born eleven children, six of whom survive him. Mr. Leonard and family came to Colorado in 1886, locating on the Black Wolf in Yuma county, and which place was his home until his death.
He was a member of Fred H. Beecher Post, No. 79 G. A. R., and holds an honorable war record. He served through a large part of the war and was with Sherman on his march to the sea.
He united with the Presbyterian church in early life and was a faithful member until death took him to the church triumphant last Sunday evening at the hospital in Colorado Springs, age 68 years, 5 months and 5 days. The remains were brought to Wray Monday night, and the funeral services held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday forenoon under the auspices of the G. A. R., the services being conducted by Rev. Robt. V. Carson of the Methodist church, and the tired body was tenderly laid to rest in the Grand View cemetery. Mr. Leonard had been in failing health for the past year more, and had entered several hospitals for treatment, the last being in Colorado Springs where recent1y he was operated on and he was thought to be well on the road to recovery, but the latter part of last week he took a change for the worse and Sunday evening shortly after 6 o'clock he passed away.
Deceased was well known in Yuma county, and to know the man was to love and honor him , and his taking away leaves a vacancy in religious and social circles of the county.
To the bereaved relatives the Gazette joins with their host of friends in extending heartfelt sympathy."

In 1945, regarding land in 1S 44W, Yuma County "In the Matter of the Petition of ESTHER L. MILLER, for the Determination of Interests in the Lands and Tenements of SARAH A. LEONARD, also known as SARAH A. LENNARD, deceased. Notice is hereby given that Esther L. Miller has filed her verified Petition in this Court, praying for the Determinaton of Interests in the Lands and Tenements of Sarah A. Leonard, also known as Sarah A. Lennard, deceased, alleging that the sole and only heirs at law of the said Sarah A. Leonard, also known as Sarah A. Lennard, are George W. Leonard, Herman S. Leonard, Charles F. Leonard, Veva I. Leonard, Annie L. Mercer, John D. Leonard, Mary A. Barton, and that said decedent was, at the time of her demise the owner of the real estate hereinafter, described. That the hearing upon said Petition has, by order of said Court, been set for Monday the twentieth day of August. A. D. 1945, at ten o'clock."

ANNIE

Anna L. Leonard, 23, born in Jasper County, Iowa, married Charles D. Mercer in Iowa County, Iowa on February 25, 1886.

March 1899 Wray "As we predicted; a surprise party enlivened social circles last Sat. eve. It was at Mrs. Mercer's, it being the thirteenth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Mercer. The company arrived early in the evening in the jolliest spirits and the evening passed all too quickly in social converse, music, and dainty and substantial repast. A beautiful china teapot was presented by W. A. Leonard, a handsome oak center table by Cloyd Mercer and Veva Leonard; and an elegant and comfortable oak rocker by the company. Supper was served at 10:30 and all partook liberally of the numerous and delicious edibles furnished by the ladies. Misses Ella Lynam, Estel Chenney and Veva Leonard acted as waiters in a charming manner. The event will always be a pleasant memory to all there. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Willson; Mr. and Mrs. Hudgal, Mr. and Mrs. Chensey, Mr. and Mrs. Hendrie, Mrs. Butts, Mrs. Hedrick, Mr. and Mrs. Lynam, and Mr. W. A. Leonard of Collins, Iowa."

March 1899 "W. A. Leonard departed Tuesday evening for his home at Collins, Iowa, after a few days visit with C. D. Mercer and family. Mr. Leonard is cousin to Mrs. Mercer."

Possibly he is the Asa W. Leonard who timber-claimed a quarter in section 9, 2S 44W in 1900.

August 1899 "Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Leonard of Lincoln were here the early part of the week for a visit with relatives. They departed Wednesday for Colorado Springs, where they will visit for a week prior to their return to their home. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard are uncle and aunt of Mrs. C. E. Mercer."

In 1900 Wray, Charley Mercer is a blacksmith, born Nov 1860 in Ohio, amrried 14 years to Annie L. born July 1863 in Iowa. Cloyd F. was born Dec 1888 in Colorado.

June 1900 "Miss Ella Leonard of Lincoln, Neb., a cousin of Mrs. C. D. Mercer, is here for a few weeks visit. Miss Leonard has been teaching in the McCook schools for the past two years."

August 1901 "Sherman Leonard, a cousin of Mrs. Mercer, stopped off Thursday evening for a short visit. He was in the Philippines about two years. He has a position with the B. & M. now."

October 1908 "Mrs. C. D. Mercer of Ft. Collins, arrived in Wray last Friday and visited for a short time with her brother, Scott Leonard, on the Black Wolf. She also visited a few days with many friends in this city. Mr. Mercer is engaged in the hardware business in Fort Collins."

Anna Laura Mercer 1863-1947 is buried in Fort Collins 3 102413054, with Charles D. 1860-1928.

Cloyd 1889-1982 and his wife Florence E. 1885-1921 are also buried in FOrt COllins.

VEVA

August 1901 Wray " Miss Veva Leonard came down from Colorado Springs to spend a week or so with her sister, Mrs. Mercer, and her father and brother."

When John D. Leonard registered for WWI, his nearest relaive was Miss Veva Leonard of Biggs, Butte County, California.


Charles is farming in Butte County, California in 1920, 46, with sister Veva 36, both born in Iowa.

They're in Santa Rosa in 1930 and 1940.

CHARLES

Charles was born April 29, 1873 in Iowa County, Iowa to George W. Leonard and Sarah Ewing.

August 1898 Wray "C. F. Leonard of Claremont, Colo., son of G. W. Leonard, was over visiting Wednesday."

Charles F. and Herman S. Leonard were both members of the Wray Masonic Lodge in 1904.

In 1906 Charles F. Leonard of Wray, Colorado, was granted a patent on a wire fence machine.


Charles is farming in Butte County, California in 1920, 46, with sister Veva 36, both born in Iowa.

They're in Santa Rosa in 1930 and 1940.

Charles is buried in Santa Rosa, California 1873-1959 # 95188563.

VERA

Vera M. Barton 1885-1974 is buried in Long Beach # 133588511. Harry Kaytor Barton born Fe b2, 1887 at Curtis Nebraska, was a meat cutter at Colorado City, Colorado in 1917.

HERMAN

Herman is farming alone in 1900 Glendale Precinct, born August 1866 in Iowa, both parents born in Ohio.

Charles F. and Herman S. Leonard were both members of the Wray Masonic Lodge in 1904.

In 1910 Vernon precinct, Herman is farming, 43, married three years to Lola 38, first marriage for both, but Lola has had one child, still living. George B is 2, born in Colorado.

July 1911 "H. S. Leonard from the Black Wolf, was in the city Wednesday, on business, and he brought along some samples of his dry land alfalfa. One of the samples measured 56 inches high, and was strictly from unirrigated fields; the other was not quite so tall; but was taken from the second cutting from a field that was only sowed last year. Scott has clearly demonstrated that dry land alfalfa is a success in Yuma county."

July 1912 "Mrs. Helen Goforth, of Denver arrived in Wray Saturday and visited the A. C. Miller family before going out to the H. S. Leonard home on the Black Wolf. Mrs. Goforth is a sister of Mrs. Leonard."

December 1912 "Mrs. H. S. Leonard who lives south of Wray, left for Buncombe, Illinois, the latter part of last week to visit with her parents for the coming two weeks."

In 1920 Herman 53, Nola B. 47, and George B. 12 are farmingin Gooding, Idaho.

January 1927 Wray "Mrs. H. S. Leonard of Denver arrived in Wray Tuesday evening and is visiting a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Arch Miller of this city, and with friends in Vernon and vicinity."

Herman 63, Nola D. 57, and George B. 22 are ranching in arbon County, Wyoming in 1930.

Herman S. Leonard 1867-1938 is buried in Denver # 123468017.

JOHN

John D. Leonard registered for WWI in Elko, Nevada, a hoisting engineer for the Pacific tungsten Company in Humboldt County, Nevada, his nearest relaive was Miss Veva Leonard of Biggs, Butte County, California.

In 1930 Reno, Nevada, John D. is 53, born in Iowa, with Beulah H. 47 (nee Hershish) born in Ohio. Beulah and Veva, both 7, were born in California.

John D. Leonarad, born April 24, 1876 in Dresden, Iowa, died in Reno, Nevada on October 8, 1945, divorced, a miner. He was to be buried in Mountain View.

Beulah Leonard, dying January 26, 1966 in San Leandro, California, is buried in Reno # 124920335.

"Nick Florio, a former resident of Castro Valley, passed away November 3, 2007 at 87 years old. He was born May 29, 1920 in Sala Consalina, Italy, the youngest child and only son of Michele and Caterina Florio. His family immigrated to Berkeley, California in 1923. Nick resided 84 years in Alameda County, growing up in Berkeley, graduating from Berkeley High School and becoming an electrician in Oakland in 1941. Nick served his beloved country during the Second World War as an electrican mate in the U.S. Navy, serving primarily on a LSM 330 in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked in construction and wired many of Oakland's and Castro Valley's schools. He had homes in Oakland and Castro Valley while he worked for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in electrical maintenance for over 20 years, retiring in 1978. He was proud to be a member of Local 595 I.B.E.W. for 66 years.
He was preceded in death in 1985 by his late wife, Veva Leonard Florio, after 37 years of marriage. He is survived by his loving children, Catherine (Cathy) Kuhn and Charles (Chuck) Florio, son-in-law Jack Kuhn and daughter-in-law Linda Florio. interment to follow services. CHAPEL OF THE CHIMES"


MARY


Mary A. Leonard, age 23, born in Iowa, to George W. Leonard and Sarah Ewing, married Robert A. Barton December 23, 1883 in Iowa County, Iowa.

They're in Colorado Springs in 1900 and 1910. In 1920 they're in Los Angeles, California, Robert and "Mora" both 58, Vera 35, Rowland A. 20, and Blanche M. 17.

Mary is buried in Long Beach, California 1861-1943 # 133588962, with Robert A. 1861-1933.
Vera M. Barton 1885-1974 is buried in Long Beach # 133588511. Harry Kaytor Barton born Feb 2, 1887 at Curtis Nebraska, was a meat cutter at Colorado City, Colorado in 1917.

ASA WALTER LEONARD
BIRTH DEC 1868 Iowa,

In 1880 Jasper County, Iowa, A. L. Leonard is 47, Jane Leonard 36 Wife, Joseph Leonard 18 Son, Charles Leonard 16 Son, Harvy Leonard 13 Son, and Walter Leonard 11 Son.

A. W. Leonard Birth Place: Jasper County, IA Marriage Date: 24 Feb 1892 Marriage Place: Collins, Story County, IA Father: Byron Leonard Mother: Sarah Ashton Spouse: Gertie Angelo.
Her parents were Henry Angelo and Minerva Wells.

" Samuel Henry Angelo was the second child of Samuel Wescott and Rhoda Angelo, and was born the 7th day of December, of the year 1840, on the Buck Horn prairie near Linnville and Jacksonville, in Morgan county, Illinois. In 1840 his parents moved and settled on a place in Jasper county Iowa. Six years later his father died, leaving his older brother, William J. Angelo and him to look after his mother, sister, and younger brother. He was a volunteer, soldier of the civil war, having enlisted In Company C of the 23rd Iowa regiment, U. S. volunteer service, August 10th, 1862, at Des Moines, Iowa. He was in the siege of Vicksburg and other engagements and was mustered out with an honorable discharge July the 25th 1865, at Harrlsburg, Texas, having been a corporal and a good and faithful soldier till the close of the war. After the war he returned home and was united in marriage to Minerva H. Wells on the 15th day of April, 1869. To tnis union four cnuaren were born; Gertrude M. Angelo, (now Mrs. Walter Leonard), William W. Angelo, Samuel H. Angelo and Charles W. Angelo, all of Alfalfa county, Oklahoma.
He resided in Iowa until eight years ago, when he moved to his present home in Oklahoma.
Early in his youth be united with the Christian church and was baptised at Rising Sun, Iowa, He was a faithful Christian, never making a loud profession, but living the life of Christ in his daily walk and talk. He was a kind, loving husband and father, and always had the welfare of his family at heart. He never complained but suffered with great patience and courage. A man of good habits and clean life.
He leaves to mourn his loss two brothers, J. B. Angelo of Maxwell, Iowa, and W. J. Angelo of Driftwood, Oklahoma, and two sisters, Mrs. Ann Thompson and Mrs. Ellen Carr of Collins, Iowa.
A fataer and mother, one brother and sister, a little grand daughter and grand son preceded him to the better world. His wife and children all survive him. He died at the home of his son Charles, April 16, 1913, at 2:30 p. m., having attained the age of 72 years, 4 months and 9 day. Interment Saturday, at the Keith (Okla.) cemetery. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Bishop M. Honkins, and was largely attended by the many neighbors, who mourn the loss of their esteemed friend. "

In 1910 Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, Asa W. Leonard is 41, Minerva G. Leonard 38 Wife, Byron H. Leonard 16 Son, Ruth R. Leonard 13 Daughter, Dewey C. Leonard 11 Son, Amos J. Leonard 5 Son, Mabel C. Leonard 3 Daughter, and Gracie Leonard 2 Daughter.
The last three were born in Oklahoma.
