Many Clarinda people were surprised last week to learn of the sudden death in Kansas City of Charles H. White, who formerly lived in Clarinda, having come here in 1897 as pastor of the Christian church, and was the first secretary for the Clarinda Chautauqua, in 1897-98. The accident occured in the Gloyd building at Kansas City. He was going up in the elevator which was being operated by a young man named Scott, when at the ninth floor, in some unaccountable manner, Mr. Gloyd [sic] became wedged between the floor of the elevator and the entrance from the 9th floor; and as the elevator man lowered the machine to release him, he fell below the car, and on down for nine stories, killing him instantly. Mr. White has recently been city manager of the Central Life Assurance Society at Kansas City, besides filling a pulpit of one of the churches. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, May 21, 1914

Mary White, 62, was living with her parents Robert Stevenson 89 and Mary M. 65 in Clarinda, Iowa.

"One of the oldest settlers of Page county, Robert Stevenson, died at his home on East Waiter street in this city, Friday evening, Sept. 3, 1920. Mr. Stevenson was born in Preble county, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1830. In 1848 he came to Louisa county, la. He was united in marriage June 1, 1852, at Burlington, la., to Miss Mary M. Fales. In the fall of 1854 they came to Page county, which has been their home ever since. They took a homestead on land a mile and three quarters southwest of Clarinda, which is now the John Steeve farm. When their log cabin was built the next spring they went there to live and resided there continuously until 1903 when they came to Clarinda to make their home. When Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson came to Page county there were only three houses in Clarinda. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson, one of whom was born in Louisa county, the other twelve upon the old home place in this county. Mrs. Stevenson and five of the children survive the husband and father. The children are Mrs. Mary White, Clarinda; Mrs. William Arthur, Woodland Park, Colo.; John Stevenson, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. E. D. Patterson, Siloam Springs, Ark.; Herbert Stevenson, Los Angeles, Calif. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:30. The services were conducted by Rev. M. S. McMillan of the Reformed Presbyterian church in Harlan township. Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson were charter members and among the organizers of that church. The church was established within a year or so after they came to Page county. At the funeral music was given by members of the church choir. Burial was in the cemetery at the church. Mr. Stevenson was a fine man— companionable, straightforward, honorable. It would seem that this mention of his demise would be incomplete without at least brief reference to his distinguishd personal appearance. He was an unusually tall man, of commanding proportions, and despite the weight of his recent years he walked with shoulders well back and with form as erect as a soldier's. He will be much missed by many people in this vicinity.
