Harry and Sarah O. (Brown) Shriner, Wray


SSDI has Harry born November 14, 1870 in Bedford City, Pennsylvania.

In 1880 Bedford County, William M. "Schriner" is 33, Anna M. 29, Samuel D. 11, William H. 9, Nora A. 6, and Van R. 4.

In 1885 Douglas County, Kansas, W.M. Shriner is 39, Annie M. 34, S.D. 16, W. H. 14, Nora A. 11, and Vanny 9.
(Nora married Henry Hohman on November 29, 1915 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.)
(Van Ransom Shriner married Josie (Hare), and is buried in Pawnee City, Nebraska 1876-1944 # 82768224.)

February 1890 Lawrence, Kansas "W. M. Shriner loaded his household goods and chattels on the cars last Tuesday, and billed them for Vernon, Neb; the family followed the next day. "
"A number of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Shriner's young friends gave them a pleasant surprise last Saturday evening. Notwithstanding the evening was rainy a large number were present. The host and hostess did all that was in their power to make the evening pleasant. A supper was served at the proper time. The evening was pleasantly passed in social conversation and games, after which the guests took their leave, wishing Mr. and Mrs. Shriner and family a pleasant and safe journey to their future home in Nebraska. "

W. M. Shriner is in the 1890 directory of Nelson, Nuckolls County.


William H. Shriner, 28 son of William Shriner and Anna M. Griffith, married Sarah O. Brown, 20, daughter of William Brown and Mary A. Rennel, on December 7, 1898 in Table Rock, Nebraska.

In 1900 Nuckolls County, Nebraska, Harry is farming, born November 1870, with Sarah O. May 1878, both born in Pennsylvania. Vernon H. was born October 1899 in Nebraska. His father William April 1846 in Pennsylvania, is with them.

1892 Lawrence, Kansas "Wm. Shriner, an old and well known resident of this county, was down from Nelson, Nebraska, on a visit to his brother, J. C. Shriner, of Grant township, before the latter left for Pennsylvania to make his home. Mr. Shriner likes Nebraska very much , and the health of himself and family has been much better than in Kansas."

All four are in Barton County, Kansas in 1905.
1906 Great Bend, Kansas "S.D. Shriner has returned to Offerle."

(In 1920 William is back in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, 73, with son Samuel D. Shriner 51, a single carpenter.

In 1910 Harry, Sarah, and Vernon are in Dundy County, Nebraska.

1912

November 1913 "The deal was closed just recently whereby George Short disposed of his relinquishment north of town to Harry Shriner of Haigler. Mr. Short will give possession the first of March and Mr. Shriner and family will locate here permanently. The George Short family will build on their quarter section of land joining their homestead on the south right side of the Crystal lake. They have just completed a substantial dam and are planning on putting up a big supply of ice this winter."

January 1914 "Mrs. Gail Carrol, and her brother, W. R. Horton, both of Haigler, Nebraska, were visiting their aunt, Mrs. Harry Shriner, and family of north of town, and also visited in the D. M. Patchen home. They returned to Haigler Sunday."

March 1917 "Mrs. Harry Shriner one mile northeast of Wray, returned Friday from Haigler, Nebraska, where she had been called to take care of her brother's wife, Mrs. Henry Brown, who is seriously ill."

December 6, 1917 "The death of Mrs. Mary A. Brown occured last evening at 7:00 o'clock at the home of her daughter. Mrs. D. N. Patchen, north of Wray. Mrs. Brown was a woman of seventy years nine months and fifteen days of age and had been ill for some time. Three months ago she was taken seriously ill and during her last few weeks, she was taken care of by Mrs. Patchen and family.
During her residence in this county she had resided on her homestead which joined the Patchen farm. Mrs. Brown leaves four daughters, Mrs. Viola Horton, of Adena; Mrs. D. N. Patchen of north of town; Mrs. Sarah Shriner, of Wray; and Mrs. Vina Woodman, of Carter, Oklahoma. She also leaves three sons, H.J. and H. W., both of Haigler, Nebraska, and A. P. Brown of Hubbell, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, at the D. N. Patchen home, . Freeman Bullard will have charge of the services and burial will be made in Grand View Cemetery. It is expected that all of the children will be present with the exception of Mrs. Woodman, Mrs. Horton and A. P. Brown. We extend our sympathy to the family and friends."

July 1919 "Mrs. Mary A. Brown died December 5, 1917 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. M. Patchin, at Wray, Colorado. She was a devoted Christian, a member of the M. E. Church of Table Rock, Nebraska. She spent most all her active life in Table Rock, and in accordance with her request, and with the consent of her children, the remains were placed in the Table Rock cemetery July 1, 1919. Those who survive are Livina Woodman of Carter, Okla., Mrs. D. M. Patchin and Mrs. Harry Shriner of Wray, Colo., H. W. Brown of Benkelman, Nebr. and H. J. Brown of the same place.
A brief service was held in the cemetery by Adolph A. Bolden, Pastor of the Church of Christ."

William M. Brown 1815-1901 is also buried in Table Rock, # 38331005.
"Word was received here Tuesday morning announcing the death of William Brown at the asylum at Hastings. Relatives had the body sent home for burial and the funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. W. Shamel. About a year ago he was sent to the asylum at Lincoln and a few months ago was transferred to the one at Hastings. He was born in the state of New York on November 18th, 1815, consequently was a a few days over 86 years of age when he died. He came to Table Rock in 1879, and since then ran a blacksmith shop here, working early and late at his trade until incapacitated by old age. He was a great reader and had a retentive memory, which enabled him to keep well posted on events of the day. While he was rough in exterior, he was a great lover of music, and the writer has seen the tears roll down his cheeks, as he talked of musical events in his history. His wife, who was divorced from him, lives at Howe, and he leaves several children, two of whom reside here. "

Mary's heirs had proved up 320 acres in sections 30 and 31, 3N 43W in 1919, and Dennis M. "Patchin" e20 acres in section 32 in 1918.

March 1919 "The Conrad garage is doing a thriving business these days and it looks as if if the people in and about Wray are indicating their prosperity by awaiting the arrival of cars. Those whose orders are now on file are : Arch Cox, Harry Shriner and Henry Sears, all of Wray, Sellers Nelson of Laird and others that will soon be sporting Ford touring cars."


In 1919 Harry proved up 320 acres in sections 31 and 32, 2N 43W.

In 1920 Harry, Sarah, and Vernon are farming in Yuma County.
August 1923

In 1930 Yuma County, Harry is farming, 59, married to Sarah O. 51, both born in Pennsylvania.

W. Harry Shringer 1870-1955 is buried in Great Bend Kansas # 129798840, with Sarah O. Shriner 1878-1964 # 129798828.

March 20, 1955 "Funeral services for William Harry Shriner, 84, were held Saturday afternoon from the Cook and Weber funeral home with the Rev. Cecil Swindle officiating and burial in the Great Bend cemetery.
Shriner died Wednesday at Englewood, Colorado. He is survived by his widow Sarah and a son Vernon of the home."

December 9, 1964 "Graveside funeral senvces for Mrs. Sarah O. Shriner, 86, a former Great Bend resident, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Great Bend Cemetery. She died Sunday morning in a hospital in Englewood, Colorado.
She is survived by a son, Vernon, Denver, and a grandson. Her husband, Harry, died in 1955."

VERNON

Vernon married Mary M. Garten on April 28, 1926 in Yuma County.

In 1940 Vernon is a mechanic in Denver, 40, with Mary 38, Louis 11, and Ramana 8.

Mary, born August 17, 1901, died January 30, 1994.
