Winthrop and Dora B. (Rickey) Curtiss, Wray

WINTHROP'S FAMILY

In 1870 Morgan County, Illinois, Myra Curtiss is 33, keeping house, with Charles 11 and Winthrop 9, all born in Illinois.

Lamira J. (Fry) Curtiss 1837-1870 is buried in Morgan County, # 11767720, wife of Charles Downs Curtis.

In 1880 Morgan County, Illinois, Winthrop Curtiss is 18, born in Illinois, nephew of Royce E. 41 and Calista M. Curtiss 46,. Cyrsl P. 21 is their adopted son, and Katie Roak 18 is a ward.

The Oberlin College 1882 history had "Winthrop Curtiss, Waverly."

"Calista L. Curtiss had no children, but she reared and educated ten. Among these juveniles were Ralph's nephew, Winthrop Curtiss (1862-1903), and his wife.."

DORA'S FAMILY

In 1881 Dora Rickey and Kate (Rickey) Marlowe were charter memebers of the Pi Beta Phi sororitey, composed entirely of young ladies of the town of Clarinda.

Dora B. Rickey, 18, married Edward R. Wooster, 20, on August 22, 1883 in Page County.

(This is probably Robert Edward WORSTER, 1864-1947 dying in Keokuk, Iowa, who married again in 1888 to Mary A. Virtz 1857-1930.
Dora was in Page County in 1885, 21, with Joseph K. Rickey, a physician 69 and Elizabeth 68. Eugen is 26, and insutrance teacher, William P. 49 a teacher, Kate 28, 28, Dora B. 21, and Kate W, 16.

" Dr JOSEPH K. RICKEY,age 85.. 20 Apr he was downtown shaking hands with friends and unusually well.... two days later he came down with pneumonia...died on birthday...His dau, Mrs TOBIN and son WILL were with him when he died peacefully...He was the 5th son of family of 13 children, and was the last survivor of the family...of Scotch-Irish descent... married 66 years...they had 13 children...6 still survive, as follows:
W.P.RICKEY of Dallas, TX; R.S. RICKEY of New Orleans; J.K. RICKEY of New York City; E.A. RICKEY, Mrs. EURENE TOBIN, and Mrs KATE MARLOWE of Clarinda, Iowa. Besides there are 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren living...Married in Sharon, PA...lived in PA until 1840, when he removed to Marion, IA, then to Keokuk, IA, and about 1877 removed to Clarinda, IA...extensive medical practice for 55 years...when a boy of 15, he was converted to Methodism at a camp meeting under the ministry of the great Alexander Campbell...member of Methodist Episcopal church for more than a half century...Music at his funeral was furnished by a quartet from the M.E. choir, Misses Greene and Osborne & Messrs Keener and Spry, assisted by Miss Frazier... eight practicing physicians acted as pall bearers...unusually large funeral attendance." Dr JOSEPH was both a dentist and physician; resided on S side of Blondeau St between 3rd and 4th in Keokuk, IA; 1856 City Directory. "

(Des Moines, Iowa February 16, 1928 "Mrs. Kate Rickey Marlowe, 73 years old died at her home here. She is survived by two sons, W. H. Tobin of Sacramento, California. and J. K. Tobin of Los Angeles. She was a native of Keokuk, Iowa " ")

WINTHROP AND DORA

W. Curtis and Dora B. Rickey married at Yuma,in Washington County, Colorado on October 23, 1888 (at that time Wray was in Washington County.)
Dora was of Page County, Iowa, and W. Curtiss was of Washington County. The Presbyterian minister of Akron, Joseph L. Lower performed the ceremony, withnesses J. Walter Bee and Kitt L. Sawyer.

Dora had a record of a timber culture filing in 3 North 53 West, which would be near Akron. But it wasn't completed. (many were not, so this wasn't unique.)


1889 Yuma, Colorado "Messrs. Rickey and Curtiss purchased 300 bushel of fine, solid corn of Mr. Robert Turner, grown on his farm 12 miles north of town. Robert is a good farmer."

1890 Yuma "The Whist Club held their last meeting at the Bank of Yuma, Monday evening. The holders of the lucky numbers were Mrs. Curtiss and B.F. Durham."

Winthrop cash-claimed a quarter in 21, 2N 43W in 1890. This was a couple of miles north of Wray. In 1891 he cash-claimed another quarter in 18, 1N 43W, a mile south of Wray.

The Clarinda newspaper of August 13, 1890 mentioned "Curtiss, Dora B., b 16 Dec 1861 Canton, Mo; d Clarinda; father W.P. Rickey; Clar; infant child also died."

Dora is buried in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa, "Dora B. Rickey witfe of W. urtiss, died August 7, 1890 aged 28 years.

June 1895 New Orleans, Louisana "Mr. Winthrop Curtis, who has been stopping at the pleasant boarding-house of Miss L. S. Alderson, at Bonnie Oaks, left Thursday for a few weeks' visit at his home in Waverly, Illinois."

WINTHROP AND IDA

"Winthrop married 31 Mar 1896 in Morgan County, Illinois, a bride named Ida McCasland."

In 1900 Ocean Springs, Jackson County, Mississippi, Winthrop Curtiss is farming, born January 1862 in Illinois, married four years to Ida M. born May 1874 in Illinois. Ralph Dec 1987 and Helen October 1899 were born in Mississippi.

Jackson County, Mississippi, Evergreen Cemetery "Mrs. Winthrop Curtis to 11-20-1902."
FindaGrave # 42367171 has her dying November 20, 1902. "Mrs. Withrop Curtis."

"Winthrop Curtiss died at San Antonio, Texas on January 15, 1903. His brother, Charles F. Curtiss (1859- ) of Waverly, Illinois, was the executor of his estate, Jackson County, Mississippi Chancery Court Cause No. 1129-February 1903.
Maternal aunt, Grace McCasland of East St. Louis received $5.00 per month to rear the ..."

"The Edward and Mary Firth and children had left Ocean Springs and returned to Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio before November 1902. At this time, E.T. Firth was named as a surrogate to W.C. West in the Last Will of Winthrop Curtiss, who expired at San Antonio, Texas in January 1903. Winthrop Curtiss (1862-1903)"

"In October 1898, Ralph C. Curtiss conveyed a one-half interest in all of his East Beach property (about 70 acres) for $1500 to Winthrop Curtiss, his nephew. Winthrop and Ida M. Curtiss had two children, Ralph Charles Curtiss (1897-1910+) and Helen M. Curtiss (1899-1910+), who were born at Ocean Springs. "


RALPH

"Rolf" Charles Curtiss, 12, is with his aunt Fannie Curtiss, 56, widowed in Morgan County, Illinois.

He's in Chicago in 1920, a manager of a steel firm, 22, born in Mississippi, single, in a lodging house.

Ralph C. Curtiss, 22, and Camille Guthorinsen 25 married in Chicago on June 30, 1920.

Ralph C. Curtiss, 24, and Carmille Guathounse, 26, had Charles Francis Curtiss on April 4, 1921 in Chicago.

Camille is divorced in 1930 Chicago, born 1894 in Wisconsin, with Charles 9.

Charles 19, and Camille 47, a registered nurse, are in Winnebago County, Wisconsin in 1940, living wiet Camille's sister Gunhild Gutharnsen, 57, born in Wisconsin.

In 1940 Chicago, he's a clerk, single, living in a hotel.

Ralph C. Curtiss, born December 2, 1897 in Mississippi to Winthrop Curtiss and Ida McCasland, died in Chicago June 9, 1965, widowed, a salesman living at 4544 N. Hazel. The informant was Rose Koelper. He was to be buried in Graceland.

University of Wisconsin "Chuck Curtiss, longtime Professor in the Theoretical Chemistry Institute, died on Christmas Eve. The following obituary appeared in the Capital Times December 27, 2007.
"Charles F. Curtiss, age 86, passed away on Monday, Dec. 24, 2007. He was a professor of theoretical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin for 41 years. Charles is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois; three sons, Larry (Jane), Glenn (Cindy) and Ned (Gay); and three grandsons, Andy, Greg and Ryan."

HELEN

In 1910 Helen is in East St. Louis, Illinois, 10, living with her grandfather William A. McCasland 74, born in Indiana, and his daughter Grace MCasland 38 Illinois

Helen was living at 335 W. 45th Street, New York City, in 1922 when she arrived from Barbados. She was born October 31, 1900 (Wrong- 1899)

Helen Curtiss and Philip W. Lowry married in Philadelphia in 1923.

In 1930 New York City, Helen C. Lowry is 29, born in Mississippi, parents in Illinois, a saleswoman in a book shop, married to Philip W. Lowry, 36.

Philip and Helen are on East 68th in 1940 New York City.

Winthrop Curtis took a teacher exam in San Miguel County, Colorado on September 7, 1891.

May 25, 1886, County Superintendent J.B. Cooke of Weld county declared our present district organized and enumbered it the Sixty-firast (sic) district of Weld county, Colo. Pursuant to notices legally posted some years before, the citizens of the proposed new district met at Newel's hotel, in the town of Wray, for the purpose of organizing a new district with boundaries as follows: Beginning at the Nebraska line; extending west to the middle of range 45 west; and from the Arapahoe county line north, to the north line of township 2 north. At this meeting Mr. Wm. B. Hays was chosen chairman and Mr. W. Curtiss Secretary. After this temporary organization a vote was taken whether or not proposed new district should be organized. The ballot box remained open from 1 till 4 p.m. p ten votes were cast for the organization and none against it. At the regular time, the first Monday in May, a school board was elected with S.C. McClusky president, Wm. Curtiss secretary, and W.J. Newell treasurer.


1911 "Ed Curtiss, from the Curtiss ranch up in the hills, attended the Yuma county fair at Wray last week."

1913 Wray "Ed Curtiss of twenty miles north of here was seen at this place the latter part of last week."

March 1913 "Henry and Ira Curtiss of twenty eight miles north was in our city the first of the week."

November 1916 "Comer Curtis, of several mile north of Wray, Friday became the owner of the east delivery line, having purchased the same from John Dalrymple. Mr. Curtiss will move his family down within a short time."
