and Maggie M. Dec 1887 were born in Kansas, Fannie E. Oct 1889 in South Dakota.
Nathan Chandler Calhoon 1839-1921 is buried in Hughes County,
South Dakota # 57488246, with Sophrona Elizabeth (McMillan) Calhoon
1848-1915 # 57488261.
November 1909 "R. Calhoon left for his home in Missouri last week."
In 1910 Yuma County, Roy is farming, living alone.
August 1914 Dewey Ridge items " Miss Katy Thomas went to her home near Vernon Saturday.
She has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas."
Anna Minnie Emma (Winkelman)(Calhoun) Thomas 1862-1936 is buried in Vernon # 6668391.
"Anna was a daughter of Ernst/Williams and Johannah Louise (Gumelt) Winkelman.
She was the sister of: Anna Amilia, Mono and Ottelea W.
She was first married to Mr. Calhun. Then she was married to John B. Thomas.
They had the following known children:
Fred H., Clara, John W., Edward F., Harry L. and Johannah L."
March 24, 1905 "Miss Katie Thomas, who has been up at Pueblo for some time,
arrived in Wray Saturday and went out to her home south of Vernon."
"Miss Katie Thomas who has been employed at Pueblo, Colo.,
returned to her home, eight miles south of Vernon, last Saturday."
October 1906
November 1906 "Katie Thomas was threatened with typhoid a few days ago, but is up and
around now."
March 1907 "Katie Thomas expects to leave here for California to visit a sister.
Eddie Thomas, who had the misfortune of discharging the contents of a gun
into his foot, is able to be about again."
July 1, 1910 "Miss Katie Thomas arrived Wednesday from Ocean Park, Cal.
She went out to the home of her mother, Mrs. Anna Thomas, where she will probably
remain for a few months."
Roy E. Calhoon, 29, married Katherine H. Thomas, 26, on October 21, 1914 in Yuma County.
August 1914 Dewey Ridge items " Miss Katy Thomas went to her home near Vernon Saturday.
She has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas."
December 1914 "At the newly established home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Calhoon
on the Ainslee ranch Mrs. Calhoon's mother and sister from Vernon, Mrs. Minnie Thomas
and Miss Louisa Thomas were guests for the week.
The spirit of festivity extended to many other homes and with business suspended,
the day was spent in a truly Thanksgiving spirit."
January 1915 "Mrs. R. E. Calhoon is acting as nurse in a Wray family,
and Roy is grieving over the loss, temporarily, of a splendid housekeeper."
March 1915 "Mrs. Roy Calhoun's mother and sister, Mrs. Thomas
and Mrs. George Hadlock spent several days with her during her
illness. They returned home Friday. Mrs. Calhoun is better
at present."
April 1915 "A twelve-year-old boy from the orphans home
in Denver came down on number 14 Saturday, to make his home
with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Calhoun. The little fellow is
fortunate in having these estimable people as foster parents
and they in turn deserve commendation for their charitable
enterprise."
June 1915 "R. E. Calhoun who was called to Blunt, S. D. by
the serious illness of his mother reports her only slightly
improved. Mrs. Calhoun's sister, Miss Louise Thomas is staying
with her during her husband's absence."
July 1, 1915 "Mrs. R. E. Calhoun received a telegram from her
husband at Blunt, S. D., Sunday, stating that his mother had
passed away that morning. The community tenders heartfelt
sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun."
March 1916 "Mrs. Minnie A. Thomas and daughter Louise,
returned Wednesday of this week from Chedron, Nebraska,
where they had been visiting friends and relatives.
Mrs. George Hadlock visited with her sister, Mrs. Roy Calhoun,
of Laird, Sunday of last week."
April 13, 1916 "Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Calhoun, of north
of Wray, Saturday night, a girl baby."
April 1916 "Dr. and Mrs. Mathews, Mrs. Carl and Mrs. Hedrick
called at the R. E. Calhoun home Sunday to see the little girl,
Helen Emaline. They report Mrs. Calhoun and baby getting along
fine and Cal is improving."
May 1916 "Mr. and Mrs. Jim Adams and Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Calhoon took Sunday dinner
at the J. E. Shay home."
August 1916 "R. E. Calhoun's father and sister are with him at
present. Miss Calhoun will teach north of Laird this winter."
Willhelm Lollman made an additional stock-raising claim for land in 31 and 32, 3N 42W, witnessed by Charles Lofthouse, Frank Merrill, RayCalhoon, and D. Carl McGinnis, all of Laird.
Roy proved up two quarters in sections 2 and 11, 2N 43W in 1916, and another 40 acres in section 11 for Stock.
March 1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Roy Calhoon, who live several miles northeast
of Wray were visitors in Wray Saturday."
May 1917 "Mr. and Mrs. Roy Calhoun and children,
accompanied by the father and sister of Mr. Calhoun,
all of whom reside north of Laird, spent Sunday with
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Miller of Wray."
February 1918 "Miss Frances Calhoun spent Saturday evening with her brother Ray Calhoun."
January 1919 "Miss Calhoun, who has been an assistant in the
office of the county clerk for several months,
recently severed her connection with that office and has
been spending the past week visiting her brother, Roy Calhoun,
and family, in Laird."
In 1920 Roy, Katherine, and Helen are farming in Yuma County, Laird precinct. The census index has them as "Calkoon."
March 2, 1922 "Mrs. Calhoun has been quite sick the past
few days."
March 1922 "Mr. and Mrs. Joe Green were Thursday morning visitors at the home
of R. E. Calhoun.
R. E. Calhoun took his wife to the Mayo sanitarium at
Rochester, Minn., last Thursday evening.
Mrs. D. W. Pilkington and son Webster and Mrs. Heyer
and son Dale were Wednesday evening callers at the R. E.
Calhoun home."
March 23, 1922 "Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun came home from the sanitarium on Sunday,
where they hud gone a week ago for medical advice."
September 1922 "R. E. Calhoon is cutting corn
this week for Mr. Lollman."
December 1922 "Mr. and Mrs. James Patton and family and R. E.
Calhoun and family were Thanksgiving dinner guests at the
Fred Roper home."
In 1930 Yuma County, Roy is farming, 44, with Katherine 42 and Helen E. 16.
Roy and Katherine are farming alone in 1940 Vernon precinct.
Roy registered for WWII in Yuma County, with Katherine, born October 6, 1885 in Kingman, Kansas.
Roy is buried in Vernon, Colorado 1885-1972 # 80217067. So is Catherine 1888-1975 # 80216987.
In 1940 Dundy County, Nebraska, Helen is married to Carl Sharp, farming. Mary Grace 2 and James C. eight months were both born in Colorado.
Carl 1915-2001 and Helen E. 1916-1993 # 71449738 are both buried in Haigler, Nebraska.
FRANCES
Frances Elizabeth Calhoon was born October 1, 1889 in Hughes, South Dakota to Nathan Chandler Calhoon and Saphrona Elizabeth McMillan.
In 1910 Marshall County, Kansas, Frances E., 20, is a housekeeper for her brother Abner O. Calhoon, 26.
January 1919 "Miss Calhoun, who has been an assistant in the
office of the county clerk for several months,
recently severed her connection with that office and has
been spending the past week visiting her brother, Roy Calhoun,
and family, in Laird."
In 1920 Frances is in Wray, a stenographer for a fruit company, boarding with A.A. and Stella Wilkins, both 22
In 1930 Frances is in Lincoln, Nebraska, 40, a bookkeeper for a printing company, living with sister Anna B. Collins 50, Mildred L. Collins 23, an Dorothy C. 6.
Frances is still in Lincoln in 1940, a clerk, rooming with Roy and Anna L. Evans, both in their 40's botn in Nebraska.
Frances E. Calhoon 1889-1964 is buried in Vernon # 80216922. SSDI has her dying February 1963.
