"Mr. Dungan, who owns the farm on which the fort was located, states that
the old Fort Kearney crossing, commencing on the south side of the Platte,
started at a point one-half mile west of the fort, taking a northeasterly course,
striking the north bank about two miles east of the fort, making the crossing
quite three miles in length. It is related that a ferry was operated at one time
near this crossing, consisting of a large flat-bottomed scow drawn back and forth
by several yoke of oxen."

November 15, 1923 "Mrs. James E. Burnside, an old lady who lived
five miles north of Wray, died Friday, Nov. 9, following a
brief illness. Mrs. Burnside was born at Cadis [should be Cadiz], Ohio, March 11, 1842,
and was in her 83rd year at the time of her death. The body was taken
to Stratton, Nebraska, where on Sunday, Nov. 11, funeral services
were held and interment took place. Mrs. Burnside is survived by her
aged husband and six sons, two of whom, Selden and Jim, live
in this community. The deceased had been a member of the
Methodist church since the age of 10.
She was married to James R. Burnside Sept. 27, 1864, and to
this union 10 children were born."

James "Burnsides" proved up two quarters in 6, 2N 43W in 1916. Because the elder James had homesteaded in Nebraska in 1890, this claim is probably the younger James.

Carl McIrvin died March 29, 2017 at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.
Mr. McIrvin was born May 15, 1940 in Wray, Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1970 and was a member of DAV and VFW. He had worked at Soapy Suds Laundromat and enjoyed fishing and watching wildlife.
Survivors include two sons, Ricky Allen McIrvin and James Robert McIrvin and daughter, Tina Marie Jones; brothers, Lawrence 'Larry' McIrvin and Alfred McIrvin; 12 grandchildren, Misty Michaels, Sky, Sabrina, Joshua, James H., James L., Thomas and Kathran McIrvin, Cody Ingram, Brad Jones, Brandon Clark, and Amanda Knight; as well as 9 great-grandchildren, Eli McIrvin, Zane McIrvin, Jaxson Ingram, Dakota and Paige Michaels, Elija and Caden West and Kenda and Quinton Burnett; and special friends, Steve Sullivan, Ray Aubuchon and Dewayne Beller.
He is preceded in death by his father, Winfield Scott McIrvin and mother, Julia (Cummingore) McIrvin; sister, Louise McIrvin and brothers, Ora and William Albert McIrvin.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Fowler-Sullivan Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. April 3, 2017 in the chapel with Bro. Raymond Nelson officiating. He will be laid to rest at 12 noon in the Missouri State Veteran Cemetery, in Bloomfield, with full military honors."

Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery in Rockdale, Texas.
Mr. McIrvin died Friday, Sept. 7, at his home.
He was born in Idalia, Colo. to Orley D. McIrvin and Goldie G. Eagleburger McIrvin. He had lived in the Rockdale area since 1952.
He was a crane operator with Alcoa at Rockdale from 1952 until he retired in 1974. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Lucille Luetge on May 11, 1946, in Belton.
His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1984.
Survivors are a son, Robert Cecil McIrvin Jr. of Rockdale; four daughters, Shirley A. McIrvin, Delores J. Beran, Donna L. McIrvin and Debbie McIrvin, all of Rockdale; two brothers, Delbert McIrvin of Scott's Bluff, Neb., and Elmer McIrvin of Rockdale; a sister, Viola Bodeman of Sidney, Neb.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren."

Three children were born to this union. Mrs. Little was of the Christian faith and had a love of crocheting and cross stitch in her spare time. Marie was employed at the Good Luck Glove Factory until she retired.
Survivors include her two daughters, Linda and husband Robert Wood of Vienna, IL, Karen and husband Dale Beyers of Tuscola, IL and her son, Leslie Little of Joppa, IL; 7 grandchildren, Ron Wood, Christine Wood, Jim Wood, Shawn Beyers, Jason Little, Ryan Little, and Sara Little; 6 great grandchildren, Courtney Tabor, Ethan, Lilly and Hudson Wood, Mack and Tent Beyers; 1 great-great granddaughter, Gabby Ellet; 2 sisters, Inez Pritchett of Joppa, IL and Edna Robbins of Grassy, MO.

Mr. Burnside was born April 13, 1931, in Wray, Colorado. He worked for many years as a sales clerk at Kater Inn Grocery, and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include four sisters, Hazel Manns, of Poplar Bluff, Edna Robbins, of Grassy, Mo. and Marie Little and Inez Pritchett, both of Joppa, Ill.
A graveside service with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, in Bloomfield. Bobby Robbins, a member of the family will officiate."
