Verland was a living testament to life's joyful potential until the day he died. He passed peacefully during the late afternoon on May 16, 2012, in his beloved home on Ten Mile Lake. Verland was born Nov. 29, 1911, in Smith Center, Kan., to parents Clifford and Estelle (Cook) Reavis.
Raised on a farm, he grew up understanding the values of hard work, hospitality, and gratitude. Most of his family moved from Kansas to Colorado by covered wagon. Education became his passion and he worked on the railroad and as a butcher to pay for school to become a teacher. While at a one-room school in Laird, Colo., in 1934, he met the love of his life and wife of 50 years, Mildred Banister. Verland enjoyed sharing stories of yesteryear, like when he rode a mule many miles every day to teach a schoolhouse of six children. He went on to teach junior high and high school math, enjoying geometry the most. From Pueblo, Colo., the young family moved to Coos Bay for Verland's teaching position at Marshfield High School.
In addition to building his Lakeside residence, he also manually cleared the forest and constructed Reavis Road with his daughter after many trials. His efforts have created road access for much of the area. Always trying to improve matters, he founded the School District 9 Federal Credit Union.
During his long retirement, he found great joy in ballroom dancing and traveling, and was known to say, “Who has more fun than people?” Verland was deeply grateful for his many blessings including his 40 years of teaching, his world travels, his long-time partners, Betty Reeves and Donna Kirby, who undoubtedly kept him young, his ability to dance at his centennial celebration, his healthy mind, his wonderful family and friends, and especially for his 100 years to experience it all.
Verland is survived by his son, Daryl of Lakeside; his grandson, Chris of Phoenix; his granddaughter, Kelsey of Portland; and his great-grandsons, Harrison and Campbell of Phoenix.
In addition to his parents, Verland was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred F. Reavis (1984); his daughter, Roberta F. Reavis (1965); his son, John L. Reavis (2002); grandson, Peter Reavis (1980); and three siblings.
The Reavis family asks you to carry on Verland's spirit in optimism and gratitude. If you had the blessed opportunity to be a part of his life, know that he felt equally blessed to be a part of yours.
