One family member wrote "William Addison Pope born Hardy County, Virginia, 29 Dec 1841; died 12 Oct 1900 Pottawattamie County, Iowa; buried Oakland Cemetery; married Hardy County, Virginia, 8 Sept 1864 to Elizabeth Hertzler (_______-29 Nov 1865 Virginia). M/2 Hardy County, Virginia, 13 Oct 1869 to Paulina Dietrick (22 Mar 1851-21 June 1923; buried Oakland Cemetery). Moved to Pottawattamie County, Iowa, in 1875 at the site of the present Hancock, Iowa. Later, he moved to a farm purchased near the present Oakland, Iowa. His first wife died in Virginia, leaving one daughter. Evelyn Louise Berlin, William's granddaughter wrote: “This William Pope family, my mother's folks, were unusually interesting. They were of high religious standards; were witty and humorous (always)---often ridiculous, always precious and loveable and dear. They did treasure the memory of their ancestors and tried to set good examples for their descendants (wasted effort). None of them ever did anything outstanding, yet all of them kept good, close knit homes. They were hard workers, very artistic and clever with hand work, fine carpenters, etc.”" |
