Dorene was born August 8, 1922, to Fred William and Mary Amling Holtzman at the family farm in the Amitie community southeast of Holyoke. Dorene attended the Amitie School until the family home was destroyed by fire and the family moved into Holyoke. She then attended Holyoke schools and graduated from Phillips County High School in 1941. On July 25, 1941, in St. Francis, KS, she was united in marriage to Lewis A. Getchell, also from Holyoke. They lived in Holyoke until September 1942 when Lewis was inducted into the Army Air Corps. Dorene then moved to Boulder and lived with Lewis' parents, former Holyoke residents, Leonard and Zora Getchell. In May 1944 while Dorene was in Boulder and Lewis was stationed in England, their son Leroy was born. Lewis returned from England in September 1944 and was then stationed at Lowry Field, Denver. Their daughter Patty was born in June 1945 at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver. After World War II, the Getchell family returned to Holyoke where Lewis worked for several years before starting a gravel hauling and excavation business. Dorene assisted him in that business by doing the bookkeeping in addition to driving trucks when necessary. Dorene also worked in the office of the Holyoke Town Clerk and worked in the office of the Holyoke Co-Op elevator. In 1960, Lewis sold the family business due to health problems and moved to Pasadena, CA. While Dorene lived in Fallon, the family purchased a small farm and raised registered Polled Herford cattle. In 1980, Lewis and Dorene "retired" and moved with the cattle to a farm they purchased near Piece City, MO. Dorene assisted Lewis with most aspects of the farm and did the required bookkeeping. In November 1992, they dispersed their cattle herd then retired and sold their farm in 1993 and moved approximately 10 miles to Sarcoxie, MO. It was during this time Dorene attended Morningside Baptist Church at Sarcoxie where she served as pianist and church treasurer for a number of years. In 1996 due to ill health, Dorene and Lewis moved to Joplin, MO where they have lived since that time. She faithfully attended Calvary Baptist Church where she practiced and demonstrated her love for her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. Dorene was especially devoted to her family and to her grandsons who spent a great deal of time with her.
