Robert George Maley and Jerusha (Chase) Poplin, James W. and Viola (Poplin) Stevens, Calvin C. Stevens, Jesse C. Stevens, Robb

In 1870 Iowa Robert is 34, Ohio, Jerusha 28, Iowa, with Violia 10, Charlotte 8, Ida 6, Linda 3, and Lily 1.

Viola Poplin married James W. Stevens Oct 14, 1877 in Decatur County, Iowa.

In Fremont County Feb 12, 1879 "Sharlott" Poplin and Abraham Merritt filed for an intended marriage.

In 1880 Fremont County Abraham 26 is (single) with John and Sarah Merritt, farming.  There's a Charlotte Merritt - daughter-in-law- 18, in the same household, with John six months old.  So the census taker checked the wrong column.

Next household is the E.W. Pease family, including Vine, 24. -

In 1895 Fremont County Sarah Merritt is 62, Abraham 42 -divorced, James E. 40, George H. 30, with Essie 12 and May Boles 19 born in Kansas.

In 1900 Fremont County Abraham says he's widowed, born Oct 1862 in Indiana.  He and brother James E. are with their mother Sarah Dc 1824, and a Ageany Pease, farm laborer, Aug 1872 Iowa.  On the same page is Vine Sep 1855 Pease, and wife Ida Sep 1864.

In 1920 Grady County, Oklahoma, Abraham Merritt, 67, Indiana, is boarding with the Conner household.

In 1930 there's an Abraham Merritt 77, Indiana, widowed, living in the Grady County, Oklahoma Almshouse.

In 1880 Fremont County, Iowa, Robert is 45, "Marusha" 42, Ida 15, Linda 13, Lillie 11, Grant 8, Walie 6, Juston 4, and Luella 1.

In 1885 Fremont County Robert and Jerusha have Malindia A. 17 Lottie O. 23 (widowed) , James C. 12, and William J. 8.

Robert proved up 160 acres in 3 and 4, 1S 45W in 1893, and another one in section 4 in 1901 on a timber claim.  Witnesses for the timber claim were James W. Stevens, Viola B. Steens, Carl Lepper, and Joseph H. Mitchell, all of Vernon.

In 1900 San Miguel County, Colorado Robert G. Poplin - Nov 1835 Ohio and Jerusha R. May 1838 Iowa have James G. Dec 1872 Iowa.

James married Anna S. Mahon September 25, 1901.

 

Minerva Emeline Chase. daughter of Lyman J. Chase and Sarah Olivia Smead,  married James Poplin, son of David Poplin and Charlotte McKinney, on 2 September 1870 at Wayne County, Iowa.  Minerva and James appeared on the census of 1880 at Precinct 10, Douglas, Colorado. Minerva and James appeared on the census of 1900 at Sioux Township, Plymouth, Iowa.  Minerva and James appeared on the census of 1910 at Tingley, Ringgold, Iowa. Minerva Emeline Chase married Robert George Maley Poplin, son of David Poplin and Charlotte McKinney, on 12 December 1913 at Bedford, Taylor, Iowa.9 Minerva Emeline Chase appeared on the census of 1930 in the household of her niece Ida at Walnut Township, Fremont, Iowa. Minerva Emeline Chase died on 14 January 1946 at Plymouth County, Iowa, at age 94.  She was buried on 16 January 1946 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Adaville, Iowa.

Minerva was in Eckley, but wrote to her niece in 1943 saying "I don't want to be buried in Eckley."  Thanks to Doris Bernhardt for the letter.

So Robert married his brother's widow Minerva, the sister of his first wife.

In the Eckley cemetery is Robert George Maley Poplin -1834-1922-  Viola's mother Jerusha Rosetta (Chase) Poplin, 1838-1906 buried in Wilson Mesa, San Miguel County (same burial spot as Frank Hollman, just a couple of years later). 25788286

In 1910 Chaffee County Colorado Grant is 36, Anna 26, Robert 7, Paul 5, Lillian 4, and Nora 1.

James Grant Poplin registered in Yuma County, with a Vernon address, born Dec 29, 1872, and nearest relative Anna Agnes Poplin.

James and Anna are farming in Yuma County in 1920, with J. Robert 17, Paul J. 15, Lillian M. 13, Nora A. 11, Rosa E. 9,- all born in Colorado  - Lucy M. 7, Eugene G. 5, and Viola E. 3 - these three in Idaho.

Rose Evelyn (Poplin) Collier is buried in Mount Olivet, Chaffee County. 43158020

In 1922 Yuma County paid for labor- probably roads - R. Poplin, Paul Poplin, and Grant Poplin.

In 1900 Norwood, Colorado William Poplin is 24, working for the William Swinford family.

William Justin Poplin registered in San Bernardino, saying he was a farmer born Nov 21, 1875, and nearest relative was Mrs. Bertha Poplin.

William Justin Poplin 1876-1935 and Bertha M. Poplin 1871-1941 are buried in San Bernardino, California.114682806

Charlotte Poplin Patterson and John Milton Patterson had a daughter Feb 7, 1891 in Mills County Iowa.

Jesse C. Stevens married Nettie Wakefield July 5, 1899.

They're farming in the Wray precinct in 1900. Nettie M. born Mar 1883 in Iowa.

Jesse C. Stevens proved up a quarter in 17, 1S 45W in 1907.

October 1906 "Emmett Sechrist of Vernon, has sold his mercantile business, Jesse Stevens and A.J. Wakefield being the purchasers.  The Gazette has not learned Mr. Sechrist's future intentions."

February 1907 Vernon Doings - "Wakefield & Stevens' new store is well under way."

1909 "Last Wednesday, the wind blew the front off of Wakefield & Stevens' store."

October 1909 they sold the general merchandise store to Charles Weaver.

In 1910 Vernon precinct they have Leora B. 5, and are running a retail store.

Jesse Conway Stevens registered with a Vernon address, born Feb 28, 1879, nearest relative Nettie.

He's a mail carrier in 1920 Vernon, and they have just Leora, 15.  Leora married Frank H. Jones August 16, 1924.  In 1930 and 1940 he's still a mail carrier in Vernon.

James and Viola are in Ralls County Missouri in 1880, with a one-year-old son.

They had Jerusha May 10, 1862 in Kossuth County, Iowa - she married John M. Patterson in 1886 and (per one tree) died in Nucla, Montrose County, April 23, 1949.   She had Ilah Maytina Patterson Aug 8, 1895 in Mills County, Iowa.  Ilah married Joseph A. Wilson August 7, 1914 in Durango, Colorado, and died there June 9, 1935.

James did a cash-claim of 160 acres in 9, 1S 45W in 1891, and then proved up 160 acres in 4 in 1896.

In 1900 Glendale precinct he's farming, born Dec 1853 in Ohio, Viola September 1860 in Iowa, with Eilburn E Aug 1885 Missouri, Robert E April 1889 Colorado, and Lillie F. Dec 1891 Colorado.

Robert Eli Stevens registered with a Vernon address, saying he was born April 12, 1889, had a wife and child.

Wilburn Stevens, 24, married Josephine Shepherd, 26,  Jun 16, 1909 in Jackson County, Missouri.

Era Wilburn registered with a Vernon address, born August 25, 1885, and worked at the Vernon State Bank.

In 1920 on Weld Avenue in Yuma, Ora, a bank cashier,  and Josephine have Mildred 8, J. Olin 6, Norma 2, and Nadean two months, all born in Colorado.  They're in Fort Collins in 1925, a bank cashier.

Josephine Ina Stevens -Jan 7 1882-Feb 28, 1925 is buried in Grandview, Fort Collins.

In 1930 Timnath- near Fort Collins, Ora is married to Edna, 26, and her mother Mabel F. Horner is with them.  Mabel is also listed in the 1930 San Diego census.

Mabel (Thayer) Horner Sep 8, 1875 - Feb 27, 1953 is also in Grandview.

Jesse Conway Stevens was born 28 FEB 1879 in Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa and died 25 NOV 1949 in Colorado Springs, Colorado (burial Eckley) He was married on July 5, 1899 in Wray, Colorado to Nettie Wakefield b: 5 MAR 1883 in Leon, Decatur County, Iowa. One known child, Lenora Stevens

1901 Yuma "The masquerade ball held on the evening of Washington's birthday was a great success.  A good crowd was present, among them being visitors from Wray, Eckley, Burdette, Hyde and Vernon.  Stevens brothers of Vernon furnished the music.  After thoroughly enjoying themselves the party broke up in the early morning."

Norma Stevens was the third of 4 children born to E.W. and Josephine Shepherd Stevens on Nov. 9, 1917 at Vernon, Colorado. She attended grade school at Timnath, Colorado and graduated high school at Eckley, Colorado. She then attended Colorado State University at Fort Collin, Colorado.

On March 26, 1937, Norma was married to Clifton Perry Taylor at Eckley, Colorado. To this union 3 children were born, Steve, Kent and Debi. The family ranched and farmed in Colorado until their move to SD, in Aug of 1954. They settled on a farm south of Presho, the buying and moving to a ranch north of town. Shortly after Clif's death in 1974, Norma moved into Presho where she made her home. She continued her interest in the ranch and in helping her family when and wherever she was needed. Norma was the founder of Paint 'N Sketch Art Club of Presho and instrumental in the establishment of the present Presho Library where she served on the board for 25 years. She was baptized and a member of the United Methodist Church of Presho and served in various office there throughout her life. Her hobbies were reading and traveling throughout the world. Her main interest was always her family, who all loved her very much.

Norma is survived by her children Steve, Kent and Debi, 7 grandchildren, 2 brothers Jim and Joe as well as nieces and one nephew and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, one brother, 2 sisters and her husband. 
 

Calvin proved up a quarter in 9, 1S 45 W in 1892, so he filed earlier.

Calvin Stevens is the son of Hubbard and Abigal Wyman Stevens, it does not appear that he ever married, he and his sister Lydia lived and died in Storm Lake, Buena Vista, IA.

Calvin was 12 in the Iowa County, Wisconsin 1860 census, and still there in 1870.

Lydia was teaching school in 1880, and she and Calvin are in Storm Lake in 1900.  Calvin was born Feb 1860 in Wisconsin, and is a laborer.  So Calvin might have gone out to Yuma County

E.W. Stevens was administrator of the estate of James W. Stevens in 1918.  In 1919 Roy Thompson of Wray bought the E.W. Stevens interest in the Vernon State Bank.

James 1853-1916 Stevens and Viola B. 1860-1947 are buried in Eckley.
