Mary proved up 160 acres in sections 12 and 13 in 1897, and timber-claimed a quarter in 13, 1S 43W in 1899.
Possibly the one born 1858 in Marion Ohio, to Joseph and Elvira (Harris) McCollum, in 1870 and 1880 Black Hawk County, Iowa, marrying Charles M. Bates in 1883, but not married in 1900.

Charles died 1893, and is buried in Harrison County, Iowa, per # 138020830. In 1930 Omaha, Mary was living with daughter Effie M. Borwn and her husband Grant Brown Mary is also buried there Child Effie M. (Bates) Brown is also buried in Omaha # 138022786.
In 1895 Harrison County Mrs. Mary Bates 41 born Ohio and Effie Bates 7 born Harrison Co are in Missouri Valley precinct.
In 1900 Harrison County, Mary A. Bates, born June 1859 in Ohio, is widowed, living with sistere Odella Girton and her husband Willard. and their two daughters.
Because Effie was living with another family in Harrison County, Iowa in 1900, going to school, that might be why - if this is the Yuma County Mary - Effie was left in Iowa.
