Herbert cash-claimed a quarter in sections 14 and 23, 1S 43W in 1889.
Herbert had filed for a homestead in that township and a timber claim in 1S 42W,
but these two weren't completed.

In 1875 Onondaga County, New York, Mary is widowed, 40, with Arthur 22, Herbert 20, Clarance 18, Lillian 14, Earnest 9, Vivian 7, Marian 4, and Jessie 2.
In 1880 New York, Mary is 46 widowed, with Arthur G. 27, Lillian 18, Earnest 4, Vivian 12, and Marian 10.

Be it known that I, HERBERT W. MARKHAM, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plate-Lifters, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of implements which are employed for removing pie-plates from the oven and for manipulating other analogous hot plates. And the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the component parts of the plate-lifter as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the claim.
In 1900 Herbert, born Dec 1854 is single, a real estate agent. With him are brother Ernest R, May 1866, sisters Vivian June 1875 and Marion October 1877, and niece Winifred Nov 1884.
In 1910 Syracuse, Herbert is a real estate agent, still single, and his aunt Sarah, 68, divorced, is living with him.
One tree says that he married Lillian (Barrett) (Mason) (Thurston) in 1911.
Herbert's widow, Lilian M. Markham, died 1945 - born in Fulton, New York, she had resided in Syracuse the past 35 years.
Herbert - no grave marker per # 148519760, died in 1933 and is buried in Syracuse.
ANOTHER POSSIBLE - a Methodist minister in New York
ANOTHER - remote, but this one with a Colorado connection - the Markham family in Loveland from England - had a cousin Herbert in England who was born 1866 - Herbert, who isn't in U.S. records.
