Asbury and Mary Gaskill, sister Marietta (Gaskill) Weller, Wray


Asbury Gaskill was born about 1844 at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Timothy Sewell Gaskill born about 1811 at Wilmington, Ohio.

In 1850 Keokuk County, Iowa, Timothy Gaskill is 37, Judith A. Gaskill 28, bothg born in Oho. Wm. M. 10, Sewell 9, Francis M. 8, Asberry S. 6, Ann e. 2, and Martha P. 1 all born in Iowa.
Asbury Gaskill was just 18, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct 9, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861. Gaskill was discharged for disability (pneumonia after contracting measles while living in the barracks)on April 23, 1862, at Springfield, Missouri.
The history of Morrowville, Washington County Kansas says "Asbury Gaskill settled north of where the state lake is now. The Gaskill School got its name from this family."
In 1880 Washington County, Kansas, Asbury "Gascel" is 34, Mary 24, William 9, Franklin W. 8, Kanzeda 6, and Bertha Jane 4.


Asbury proved up a quarter in 9, 1S 43W in 1890.


In 1900 Washington County, Kansas, Asbury born Feb 1844 in Iowa, is a justice of the peace. Married 29 years to Mary Jan 1854 Virginia. Eva Oct 1863 Kansas, Frank M. a farm laborer born Feb 1871 Kansas, Myrtle E. Jan 1884 Kansas, Ida M. March 1888 Kansas, and Claude Sep 1890 Kansas.
Asbury spent some time in 1900 at the Leavenworth Soldiers Home but at some point ended up at Fort Dodge.

1908 "S.H. Gaskill and wife arrived in Wray Wednesday from Corning Iowa, and are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Weller. Mr. Gaskill is Mrs. Weller's brother."

In July 1910 Asbury was living in Morrowville "Sewell GASKILL was born in 1840 in Henry Co., Iowa. With his parents he moved to Brown Co., Kan. in 1857 and in 1872 came to Washington Co., Kan., where he has since lived. Through sickness he lost the power of speech and hearing when about eight years of age. When a child, he was baptised in the Methodist Episcopal church and always expressed his faith in Christ and the hope of the future life. He died Friday night July 15th. The funeral was held at the home of his sister Mrs. J. NUTTER, Sunday July 17, conducted by Rev. E.C. THORP of Greenleaf, and interment made in the Mt. James cemetery. He leaves two sisters and a brother, Mrs. J. Nutter of Greenleaf, Kan., Mrs. WATSON of Mich., and A. Gaskill of Morrowville, Kansas. "

Aubrey died May 20, 1925 as a resident of the Kansas State Soldiers' Home at old Fort Dodge in Dodge City, Kansas.
He's buried in Dodge City # 58413886, with Mary 1854-1919.
ZADA (Kanzada)
Zada 1874-1924 Lott # 67313476 "wife of Chas U. Lott" is buried in Dodge City.

WILLIAM

In 1910 William 39 and Elnora 42 are in Bent County, Colorado, with Lenna M. 14, Tracy M.12, Dale D. 10, Zala E. 6, Nedda C. 4.

W.M. Gaskill is in Dodge City in 1915, 44, married to Eleanora 48. California death index has him born March 8, 1871 in Kansas, mother's maiden name Nutter, dying January 30, 1950 in San Luis Obispo County.

CLAUDE
One descendant wrote a nice story "Such was the case with my Great Grandparents, Claude E. Gaskill and Myrtle Irene Currey Gaskill. My great grandfather Claude was born in 1890 in Wray, Colorado and before the age of five, the family up and moved taking Claude and his seven siblings (a 9th child would be born later) to Washington County, Kansas. He grew up in Mill Creek and after he turned 20 years old he left home looking for work as a "Hired Man" in Grandview, Kansas. He married Myrtle Irene Currey on March 24, 1917 when he 26 years old and Myrtle just 18. During their marriage they had four daughters, Dorothy, Billie (my grandmother), Marjorie and Ruth. Their marriage lasted about 10 years, then, for unknown reasons, by 1930 they were divorced and Claude was living in Wichita, Kansas shacked up with a woman thirteen years younger than himself. This left my great-grandmother in Dodge City to raise four daughters, all under the age of twelve, alone and during the Great Depression. This couldn't have been easy. After the divorce she rented a room at the Lora Locke hotel which had just opened in 1928 and where, coincidently, my 2nd Great Uncle Carl Clare was also a lodger. She began work as a maid at the hotel while the children lived with her parents. It's assumed that she also stayed with her children at her parent's home when she wasn't working as she was listed at both locations during the 1930 census."
Billie Louise Gaskill (grandmother)was born about 1919, Dodge City, Kansas FRANK

The Wray centennial book says Frank left for Kansas in the 1890's because of drought, married Grace Gibson in Kansas, lived in Prowers County, Colorado, for a while, then back to Yuma County.

1916 "Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gaskill of southwest of Vernon, and the latter's sister, Mrs. Gibson, of Morrowville, Kansas, were in Wray Monday spending the day with their friends, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Weller."

1917 "Mrs. Frank Gaskill, of several miles south on the Black Wolfe, is spending this week with her cousin, Mrs. W.J>. Weller and family."
Warren F. Gaskill proved up two quarters in 12 and 13, 2S 44W, in 1919.
In 1922 "Gaskill, W F, Farmer, PO Vernon, 1886, Born Kansas 1872, married Grace Gibson, four children. "

Frank 1872-1949 is buried in Wray # 81614022. with Grace 1881-1971.
His son Marion Glenn Gaskill 1905-1949 # 81614098 is also buried in Wray.
Marion Gaskill married Cora Hahn Sept 22, 1927, recorded in Yuma County. Cora 1904-1933 is buried in Wray # 81614002.
BERTHA
Louis and Bertha Foster are farming in Yuma County in 1930, with Olen M. 20, Wesley 18, Myrtle 17, James 17, Guy 14, and Letha 12, all kids born in Colorado.

"Born February 25, 1876, Washington, Kansas. Died January 11, 1946, at the home of Mrs. Dolly Warren, where she had been receiving care for many years. Married December 19, 1895, in Wichita, Kansas, to Luther Nelson Foster. Thirteen children, one of whom preceded the mother. Services 14 Feb, burial Grandview.

Survivors: 12 children; Jessie Tremis, Mamie Sigwing, Ferne Hester, Lucille Wilkins, Marie Naylor, June Cornell, Roy F, Wesley, Roxie, Glen, James, Guy; Two sisters and four (three?) brothers; Myrtle Rhodes, Ida McKibbens, William Gaskill, Frank Gaskill and Claude Gaskill. "
Bertha and Luthur Nelson Foster 1859-1931 are buried in Wray # 81599193 and 63684898.

Marietta Gaskill married William Joseph Weller. Mother of Mary Leah b. 12 Sep 1880, William Harlan b. 28 Jul 1882, Walter Wesley b. 13 Oct 1885, Henry Harrison b. 1 Dec 1891 and George Ellsworth b. 11 Apr 1893.
In 1896, Wm. J. Weller proved up a quarter in 11, 1S 43W - touching Asbury's, and another 40 acres cash-claimed in 1891. In 1898 Wm. timber-claimed a quarter the other side of Asbury.


1931 Adams County, Iowa "Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gaskill and family and Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Gaskill drove to Independence, Mb., last Friday morning and spent Friday and Saturday with Sanford Gaskill's sister, Mrs; Marietta Weller, in the George Bullard home. While there they also took in_some of the sights of Kansas City."

MRS. W. J. WELLER
Funeral services for Mrs. W. J. Weller, a pioneer resident of the Wray community, who died Wednesday of last week in Lincoln, Nebraska were held at the Lockwood Mortuary in Wray Sunday afternoon, conducted by elders Harold A. Tabor and S. F. Bullard of the L.D.S. Church and burial was in Grandview Cemetery. Mrs. Weller celebrated her 93rd birthday on last March 30. Marietta Gaskill was born in Marshal, Henry County, Iowa on March 30, 1856. She taught school before her marriage at Brooks, Iowa to William Joseph Weller in 1877. From Brooks, the couple moved in a covered wagon to Colorado in April that year and homesteaded 9-1/2 miles southeast of Wray. They continued their residence here until after Mr. Weller died, when Mrs. Weller went to Lincoln to make her home. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Weller. They were Mamie L. Bullard, who preceded her mother in death, William H. and Walter W., and Henry H. all of Denver and George E. of Lincoln, Nebraska. Mrs. Weller united with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on June 30, 1897 and was active in church work throughout her long life.

WILLIAM JOSEPH WELLER

William Joseph Weller was born September 8, 1854, near Dever(town), Ohio. At the age of 12 years he moved with his parents to the vicinity of Corning, Iowa.

In his 25th year (August 21, 1879 in Adams County, Iowa) he was married to Marietta Gaskill of Corning, Iowa to which union five children were born.
The family resided in Adams County, Iowa until the year 1886, when they came with team and wagon to eastern Colorado, arriving in what is now Yuma County in the spring of 1887. During that summer Mr. Weller homesteaded land 9-1/2 miles southeast of Wray, where the family resided until 1907, at which time they moved to Wray.


From 1907 until his last illness, which began about 9 months ago, Mr. Weller divided his time between the shoe business, in which he was engaged in Wray, and the general management of his farming interests.
During the 9 months preceding his death he was almost a constant sufferer and the end came Thursday August 18.
Mr. Weller led a conscientious Christian life, having at an early age become a member of the Methodist Church, in which organization he was active as class leader and Sabboth School worker.
Shortly after coming to Colorado he affiliated himself with the L.D.S. Church of which faith he remained an ardent supporter to the time of his death.
Mr. Weller leaves his wife and only daughter, Mrs. George F. Bullard of Fort Collins, Colorado and four sons, W. H. of Las Animas, Colorado, Walter W. of Elizabeth, Colorado, Harry H. and George E. both of Wray, also three sisters, Mrs. S. J. Lewis of Emporia, Kansas, Mrs. W. H. Penton and Mrs. B. E. Lewis of Wray and one half brother, J. W. Pletcher of Smith Center, Kansas.

Adams County Iowa, September 1921 "Word reaches us to the effect Joe Weller, a brother-in-law of S. Gaskill, of this county, died at home in Wray, Colo., the latter part of August. Mr. Weller was a resident of Adams county a good many years ago. His friends in this community will regret to learn of his demise. "

In 1940 Lincoln, Nebraska, George is a salesman in his second-hand store, 48 Colorado, Margie 50 Nebraska a saleslady. Catherine is 23, Colorado, Virginia 17 Colorado, and John 11, Nebraska.
Kansas City, January 5, 1973 "George Ellsworth Weller, Sr., 79, of 1117 S. Leslie, Independence, died yesterday at a nursing - words for the address. A service b , died Wednesday at the ^av atH Brothers ^’M^rcv Home, home at 3713 S. Hardy, Independence. He was born in Ray, Colo., Mr. Weller was a retired moving and antique dealer He was a member of the Reorganized Latter Day Saint Church. Independence; two daughters, ..."

George 1893-1973 and Margaret 1889-1977 # 78404596 are buried in Independence.

May 1977 "Mrs. George (Margie) Weller, 77, Independence, Mo., former Lincoln resident, died Wednesday. Survivors: sons, John Weller, independence, Mo., George Weller Jr., San Jose, Calif.; daughters, Catherine Link, Independence, Mo., Virginia Davis, Fairbanks, Alaska; two brothers, sister, 14 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren. Services: were Saturday in Independence, Mo." -------------------------------
In 1920 Lincoln, Nebraska, George is 26, Margaret 29, Neraska, Catherine 2, Colorado, and George E. Jr. newborn, Nebraska.

1941 Lincoln "The wedding plans for Miss Catherine Weller and Vance E. Link, both of Omaha, are now being announced. The bride, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Weller of Lincoln.... Her sister, Miss Virginia Weller, will be the matron of honor. "

1965 Lincoln "Mr. and Mrs. George Weller will be honored today at an open house celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 44th and South, 2:30 to 5 p.m. The Wellers were married Sept. 29, 1915, in Omaha and have lived in Lincoln most of their lives. They have four children, George of San Jose, Calif., John of Independence. Mo., and Mmes. Vance Link of Independence, Mo., and Arthur Davis of Fairbanks, Alaska. They also have 14 grandchildren and six great­ grandchildren."


"Miss Margaret Catherine Weller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Weller, was wed to Vance E. Link of Omaha, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Link of Eustis, at a ceremony performed Saturday at 8 p. m, at the Latter Day Saint church in Lincoln. Elder Harry J. Simons officiated in the presence of 160 gueits. The backgound was formed with ferns before a white silk curtain and tall baskets of pastel flowers. Tapers in seven branch candelabra furnished the lighting. Mrs. George Mechling furnished the music and Mrs. Charles Brockway ssng. The bride's white slipper satin gown was fashioned with sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice graduated to a point in the front and back, long sleeves made fitted at the wrist and full at the shoulder and a full skirt falling into a long train. The veii of illusion was floor length falling from a tiara of seed pearls. The bride carried a bouquet of white sweetheart. "
1962 Independence, Missouri "Dr. Vance Link Injured in Independence. The motor car of an Independence physician was struck by a freight train yesterday afternoon at Sixteenth street and Harvard avenue, Independence. Dr. Vance E. Link, 44, of 1201 West Thirty-sixth street, Independence, suffered a chin cut and a concussion. He was in fair condition last night at the Independence hospital."

Dr. Vance E. Link - 1918-1977 # 80759819 is buried in Independence, with Catherine 1917-2000, # 80759713.


"DIED. Friends were shocked to learn of the death of Walter Harlan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Gaskill, of Lincoln township, at 3:45 p. m., Saturday, September 3, 1921,"

1952 Lincoln, Nebraska "Arthur K. Davis, an experienced sheet metal craftsman, has joined the staff of the Wentz Fuel Oil and Furnace Service Company. He is in charge of the newly expanded sheet metal department. Mr. Davis, who is known throughout the trade for his careful attention to detail, will supervise the installation of furnaces, duct work and all repair work on any type of furnace."


1967 " Fairbanks, Alaska -- Mr. and Mrs. Arthur K. Davis, formerly of Lincoln, Neb., announce the engagement of t h e i r daughter Catherine Lorraine to Roger Lee Porter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jamie Porter, all of L a k e Hauasu City, Ariz. Miss Davis is a freshman at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and her fiance attends Nebraska Vocational Technical School in Milford, Neb. The couple plans a late January wedding at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lincoln."



Johnny Carson interviewed his former babysitter, 83-year-old Corning, Iowa resident Mabel Gaskill, during his November 6, 1987 show. Charming, quick-witted Mabel talks about Johnny as a baby and suggests a few Tonight Show improvements she'd like Johnny to consider. Mabel delivers some very clever one-liners, and Johnny seems to love every minute of it. Carson was born on October 23, 1925 in Corning and lived there with his family for a few years before moving to Nebraska.
