George M. Johnson , 1 South 42 West


Joseph Johnson married Barbara Goings December 21, 1873 in Iowa County Iowa.
"GOINGS, GEORGE W.—Farmer and stock-raiser, Sec. 15, P. O. Marengo, Iowa County. Was born in Ohio on the 25th day of December, 1818, and when six years of age removed with his parents to Indiana, where he was raised. After completing his education he learned the trade of stone-cutting and followed it for seven years, when, on account of ill health, he was obliged to give it up. Then he engaged in farming and followed it there until the summer of 1849, when he came to this county, being one of its pioneers. He is the owner of a fine farm of 288 acres, well improved. Has a good location for his residence, four miles northwest of Marengo. Mr. Goings has been twice married. First, in Indiana, in October, 1846, to Miss Susanna Wood. By this union they had eleven children of whom one is living. His second marriage was in this county, to Miss Mary J. Norris. They have five children, two boys and three girls."


Sylvester and Hannah Gleason Greenman homesteaded in Phillips County, KS. They came from Wayne Co, IO, in 1876 where they took a homestead in Phillips County. Obituary described location as 13 miles NE of Kensington,KS. (Kensington is located in Smith County, and the adjoining county on the west is Phillips County. In 1885 Phillips County, Kansas, S. F. Greenman is 48, Hannah 34, Wm. 9, Emma 7. and Rosa 4.
Hannah died in 1904, and Sylvester died in 1922. They're buried in Smith County Kanasas # 48613964.

They are buried in Smith County--Also an infant daughter died in 1888, and an adult son, Willliam Henry Greenman was buried there in 1934 in Fairview Cem.
Hannah's mother--and Wm Henry's grandmother--was Emeline Munson Greenman. She married Philander Gleason c.1832 --probably at Huron Co, OH. Emeline was the daughter of Nathan and Abigail Dodge Munson.

Children of Hannah and Sylvester Greenman (and siblings of Wm. Henry) who were still livng when their brother, Wm Henry Greenman died in 1934 are:

Mrs. Relia Greenman Johnson, of Sugar City, CO
Mrs. Ella Greenman Brown of Kensington, KS.

George M. Johnson married Rella Greenman in Phillips County, Kansas Sept 16, 1896.

In 1900 Smith County, Kansas George M. born Sept 1874 in Iowa is farming, married four years to Rilla Aug 1881 Kansas. They have Barbara Aug 1897 Kansas and Joseph July 1899 Kansas.

George proved up a tract in sections 26 and 27, 1S 42W, Yuma County, in 1906.



In 1910 Dundy County, Nebraska, George is 34, Iowa, farming with Rilla 27 Kansas. Rilla has had six children with only two living. Frank 10 and Alva 4, both born in Kansas.

In 1920 Polk County, Missouri, George M. is farming, 47, born in Iowa, with Rilla R. 40 Kansas, Robert 8, Leslie 7, and Verl E., all three boys born in Nebraska.

They're farming in Hickory County, Missouri in 1930, with Leslie J. 18 and Verl 15 (but they said all were born in Missouri).

George Madison Johnson, born Sept 7, 1874 at "Maringo", Iowa to Joe Johnson and Barbara Goings, died July 11, 1963 at the Nevada, Missouri, state hospital, wife Reari R. Johnson.
Marella Rose "Rella" (Greenman) Johnson is buried in Sheldon, Missouri 1881-1962, # 114311680.

Verl Ebdon Johnson was born June 30, 1915 at Wray or Haigler to George M. Johnson and Rella Greenman, dying October 8, 2004.
He's buried in Lamar, Missouri # 114345513 " Verl E. Johnson, 89, Lamar, Mo., died at 11:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Truman Healthcare, Lamar, after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 30, 1915, in Haigler, Neb., to George and Rella (Greenman) Johnson.
He was a lifetime area resident. He was a carpenter and a farmer.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Lamar, and a member of the KeenAgers at the church.
He married Eva Lorene Johnson. She died March 7, 1984. He then married Marjorie Johnson. She died in June 2000.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie and Robert Johnson.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Walker, Sheldon, Mo., and Willa Fay McNary, Reeds; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granchildren. "

In 1940 Rapid City, South Dakota, Leslie Johnson is a gas station attendant, 28 with Nellie 24, both born in Nebraska. They had been in Cheyenne Wyoming in 1935.


Leslie J. Johnson 1912-2004 is buried in Pueblo, Colorado, # 106840484.
