James proved up a quarter in 2 and 11, 1S 42W in 1894, and timber-claimed another in section 10 in 1898.
Thursday August 15, 1974 THE WRAY GAZETTE Helen Avis Hultquist was born May 8, 1899, on the homestead of her parents, George F. and Agnes McGinnis Drommond, at the place known as Sanborn in Dundy County, Nebraska. She attended elementary school at Sanborn and high school at Haigler. After graduati g she taught elementary grades at both Haigler and Sanborn and also taught piano. Helen was married to Arthur E. Hultquist of Laird November 25, 1923 and to this union were born Carl E., Phillip R. and Eva Jean. The daughter died August 27, 1954. For a short period the family lived in California but most of their years were spent at Laird. She was an active member of the Laird Methodist Church serving in offices of both the church and womens organization plus being a teacher of a church school class for many years. After the death of her husband July 9, 1964, she continued to live in their home at Laird until failing health obliged her to move to Cedardale Nursing Home at Wray, where she remained until her death August 8. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William H Drommond, her husband and daughter. Survivors include two sons, Carl E. and Phillip E. of Ft Morgan, three granddaughters, three grandsons, one great great granddaughter and three great grandsons. Born May 8, 1899 Died August 8, 1974 |
FLOYD B. DROMMOND, 86, a farmer and rancher, died from cancer July 25, 1997, at a local care facility. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at Village Christian Church, 3113 Primrose Drive, with the Rev. Tom Hobby and the Rev. Al Howard officiating. Mr. Drommond was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Colorado Springs to John and Hattie Belle (Steele) Drommond. He was married Dec. 14, 1932, in Colorado Springs to Ellen Elizabeth Vandusen, who is deceased. He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Valdez of Denver and Phyllis Ross of Colorado Springs; a sister, Fay Spears of Colorado Springs; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest, and a sister, Maude Wiseman. Mr. Drommond graduated from Fountain High School. He earned the Farmers and Homemakers Award. He was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher, youth director and member emeritus at Village Christian Church. Mr. Drommond enjoyed his church, hunting and soil conservation. He was a lifetime El Paso County resident. THURSDAY JANUARY 11, 1962 WRAY GAZETTE Earl Clement Drommond, a life-long resident of this community, former business man and civic leader, died at his home Monday forenoon. His death followed more than ten years of declining health. He was 71 years, 5 months and 28 days old. The funeral service for Mr.Drommond will be held this Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev.Robert Bill officiation. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. The youngest of ten children born to James and Amanda Drommond, Pioneer settlers just east of the Colorado-Nebraska line near Sanborn, Earle Drommond was prominently identified with the development of this region since his boyhood. He wa born at the Drommond place in Nebraska on July 10, 1890. He moved with his parents into Wray in 1907. As a youth he was a well known athlete and member of a famed early day baseball team here. On June 5,1912, he married Mary Cuney. For the first five years of their marriage,the couple lived on the Drommond place in Nebraska, then moved to Wray where Mr. Drommond formed a partnership with his brother,the late Roy Drommond, to operate the City Meat Market and Grocery Store in Wray. He continued in this business form 1917 until 1941 when he retired from the business to devote his time to other interests. He was a member of Wray's first Volunteer Fire department and continued as a member of the department until his retirement. He served on the town council from April of 1931 until April of 1936 and was on the council when the first diesel engine was installed at the municipal light plant. He was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church at Wray and served as board member. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He helped to organize the Wray golf club and continued his support and interest in the golf club even after his health curtailed his activity. He was vital,witty and gregarious and made a notable contribution to the social, civic and material growth of the community he loved. Mr.Drommond is survived by his wife Mary; three daughters, Letha King of Clearwater,Florida, Earlene Whyte and Lyndall Drommond of Wray; a brother, James Drommond of Wray and two granddaughters, Nancy and Peggy Whyte. |
Wray will miss a 95-year icon in Mary Earlene Whyte. Born August 20, 1917, to Earle and Mary Drommond in Sanborn, NE. The family moved to Wray when Earlene was 7 months old. She graduated from Wray High School in 1935. Earlene then graduated from beauty school and brought her talents back to Wray. On March 20, 1938, she married Harold “Hy” Whyte. In 1942 the young couple moved to Denver to work at Remington Arms until Hy joined the Navy Sea Bees in 1943. Earlene followed Hy to California awaiting his deployment to the Philippines. When the war was over, they returned to Wray where she opened Earlene’s Beauty Shop. In 1947 they bought the home at 531 W 4th Street. Here she started a career as mother and homemaker residing there till her death. Earlene was active in Order of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron in 1962-63, a lifetime member of the Legion Auxiliary, and supported Hy in the Wray Volunteer Fire Department. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where she, her mother, and several women of the church raised money doing dinners for local business and professional clubs. She and Hy were members of the Co-Weds couples church group. Earlene loved quilting and still spent Wednesdays quilting at the Senior Center. Earlene is preceded in death by her parents, husband Hy Whyte, and two sisters Leatha King and Lyndall Drommond. She is survived by two daughters Nancy (husband Tim Entzel) and Peggy (husband John Lynch), grandchildren John Pennington, Breann Entzel, Shawn Lynch and Chad Lynch, as well as six great grandchildren. Her famous bridge quip, “That was the last hand”, will be remembered by all her fellow bridge partners. Guess that’s what she dealt to all on January 9, 2013. Celebration of Life was held on Monday, January 14, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wray, Colorado with Rev. Steve Wynkoop and Pastor Bob Gump officiating. A private family inurnment in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado. Memorials may be made to the Wray Fire Department. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangments. |
Funeral Rites are at 1:30 Today For Mrs. Walter Kerns funeral services for Mrs. Walter Kerns of this community since her girlhood, will be held at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Lockwood Mortuary with Elder S. F. Bullard officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery. Mrs. Kerns died about midnight Sunday night at the Community hospital in Wray where she had been a patient for several weeks. Her passing followed many months of illness. Laura Ellen Drommond, daughter of James Henry and Amanda Hargardine Drommond, was born on January 18, 1889, in Livingston County, Ill., in Eppaids Point township. She was 74 years, 8 months and 7 days old at the time of her death. The Drommond family pioneered in this area in 1886 establishing their home on a farm near Sanborn, just across the state line in Nebraska. Mrs. Kerns spent her girlhood in this community and on September 18, 1901, she was married to Walter B. Kerns at Colorado Springs. The couple lived there for a time, then returned to the Wray vicinity and have continued their residence here since. The have many friends in this community. Mrs. Kerns is survived by her husband and three daughters, Birdella Ralph and Twilabelle Slama of Wray and Velva June Chapman of Hemet, Calif. There are also six grandsons and two great grandchildren. She had seven brothers and two sisters, four brothers of whom survive her. They are George Drommond of Laird, Roy Drommond of Denver and James and Earl Drommond of Wray. Thursday Oct 1, 1959 Wray Gazette Roy Drommond, member of a well-known pioneer family of this area and a resident here until 1936 died Tue.night in Denver General Hospital. Mr.Drommond fell on August 21 and fractured a hip. He was taken to the hospital and his condition had been critical since. He was 72 years old. Mr Drommond, a son of James and Amanda Drommond, spent his boyhood on a farm near Sanborn, Neb. He was married on June 5, 1911 to Amy Smith and the couple lived on a farm near Sanborn until Dec.1917,when Mr. Drommond and his brother, Earl Drommond,bought the City Meat Market at Wray. The Drommond brothers operated the meat market here until the mid 1930's and were prominent in the business, civic and social life of Wray. In 1936 Mr.&Mrs Roy Drommond moved to Denver. There he was employed in the rug department of the old D & F Store and continued with this firm until shortly before it was consolidated with the May Company when he retired. Mrs. Drommond died on Dec. 23, 1943 and was brought to Wray for burial. Survivors include a son, Frank of Denver; a daughter, Mrs. Irma Anger of Denver;three brothers George of Laird and James and Earl of Wray: four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Wray. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. |
May 10, 1950 "WAC Sergeant Ellen Drommond regained consciousness for the first time since she was struck by a car April 30 on a highway near Platte City, Mo. Public information officials said she began stirring yesterday and today was out of her coma and improving. Sgt. Drommond, of Haigler, Neb. was struck south of Platte City as she stood beside her car. She had been halted by another motorist who thought she might have picked up something he dropped from his light truck. The driver of the car which struck her, 21-year-old George Vernassie of Kansas City, is free under $2000 bond to appear before Platte county magistrate Kinzea Cox on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident. He was arrested by Missouri Highway Patrolmen in St. Joseph after the accident." |
