Jacob Warner Brown , Wray


Jacob W. Brown, born in 1831, married a Lucy G. Smith, and had Charles L. March 12, 1861 in Missouri. They then had Logan, Jacob Edward, Lighter, and Lucy. His wife died soon after Lucy was born (1831-1969, buried in Madison, Missouri # 73729103) and she was raised by her mother's folks. Charles L. married Lizzie Hickerson and seven children. Ed had a wife who died with out children, and he came to Wray in 1890.
1900 "The mountain party, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Dry, Mrs. John Galbreath and Uncle Jake and Logan Brown, returned Thursday morning, having had an exceedingly pleasnt trip."

In 1900 Yuma County, Jacob born May 1831 in Kentucky is farming, widowed. John L. is a carpenter, born July 1862 in Missouri. Edward J. born May 1867 in Missouri is farming.

Jacob W. Brown bought the Owings Hotel in Wray in 1901, north of the railroad .



In 1909 Jacob Brown was occupying as a residence the building that was the Wray Hotel, built by Kennedy & Jennings in 1886.

Logan and Ed had taken homesteads northwest of Wray, Logan married August 2, 1905 to Celia Lane.


Mary married Harris Boyes and they had George, who operated a hardware store in Wray in the 1920's.
Jacob W. Brown proved up a quarter in 12, 1N 44W in 1898.

Jacob W. Brown is farming in Yuma County in 1900, born May 1831 in Kentucky, widowed, with John L. July 1862 Missouri, a carpenter, and Edward J. May 1867, farming.

Also in Wray in 1900 is Harris Boyes, born Jan 1865 in Iowa, with Mary F. Boyes August 1876 Missouri, married four years. Harris repairs harnesses. 1913

Jacob Warner Brown 1831-1926 is buried in Wray # 17036275, in the same lot as Lighter and John Galbreath.

CHARLES LIVINGSTON and wife Elizabeth Ann Hickerson.
Charles L. came to Wray in 1892, then back to Missouri and to Wray again in 1914.
He proved up 308 acres in section 6, 2N 44W in 1919.
Charles L. Brown 1861-1949 # 17035906 is buried in Wray.
1917 "Mrs. W. H. Flesher of Abilene, Texas, who has been visiting in the home of her cousin, Mrs. John Galbreath, for several weeks, returned Tuesday from a week with her cousins, Logan and Charley, of northwest of Wray."

On the same page in 1920 is Charles L. Brown 58, born with Elizabeth 54, Charles L. 15, and Amy 13, all born in Missouri.
Charles L. Jr. 1904-1979, is buried next to Pearl M. Brown-Graves 1912-2002 in Wray.

JOHN LOGAN and wife Celia Lane
In 1880 Bloomington, Nebraska, Celia Lane is 10, living with parents Martin and Bridget Lane, both 45 born in Ireland. Mary is 16, Celia 10, Delia3, Thomas 8, Kate 13, Martin 6, and John 21, all kids born in Massachusetts.
In 1900 Martin is 65, with Ceila 30, Thomas 27, Martin 25, and Anna 18 born in Nebraska.

Logan and Ed Brown working "on the South Divide" attended a dance at the Shields ranch in 1900.

August 4, 1905 Wray "A happy wedding took place Wednesday evening at the home of J. W. Galbreath, when Logan Brown and Miss Celia Lane were united in the holy bonds of matrimony."

Logan Brown was working for Wallace Grant, contractor, on constructing a large hotel bulding in Akron for August Muntzing.
1905 "Tuesday evening Logan Brown became noisy and assaulted Judge Hendie. The next morning a complaint was filed against him and upon his pleading guilty Judge Cunningham placed a fine fof $10 and costs against him, amounting to $20.85.
1906 Nashua, New Hampshire
1909 "Mrs. Logan Brown and her sister, Delia Lane spent Saturday night and Sunday visiting with Mrs. Sadie Shroyer."

1909 "Mr. Lane returned the first of the week to his home in Nebraska after a month's visit with his daughter, Mrs. Logan Brown."

John Logan Brown is farming in 1910 Yuma County, living on Hampton Road, 47, married five years to Celia E. 35, born in Massachusetts. They're still farming in Yuma County in 1920, no kids.
1912 "Mrs. Logan Brown of north of town, who was called to Bloomington, Nebr., to the funeral of her father, Mr. Lane, returned home Saturday.

1913 "Mrs. Logan Brown of ten miles north of town returned from Akron Saturday evening, wehre she had enjoyed a few days visit with her sister."
1913 "Mr. and Mrs. Logan Brown, on their return from the stock show in Denver Satureday, visited with Mrs. Brown's sisster, Mrs. John Rodgers, at Akron, between trains."
John L. Brown proved up 308 acres in 31, 3N 44W in 1916.

1919 "Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rodgers of Denver arrived Friday evening in Wray for a few days' visit with the latter's sister, Mrs. Logan Brown, north of Wray."
On the same page in 1920 is Charles L. Brown 58, born with Elizabeth 54, Charles L. 15, and Amy 13, all born in Missouri. In 1920 John L. and Celia are still farming in Yuma County, no kids. Jacob Brown, 52 is next to them, also born in Kentucky.

Celia is widowed in 1930 Gage County, Nebrasks, a housekeeper for John Hennessey 54, single, born in Ireland. She says she's his sister. .

In 1940 Celia is widowed, living in Fort Collins.

John Brown 1861-1938 is buried in Wray - next to Josephine Brown 1876-1951.
Celia Brown, is in Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colorado in 1940, 69, widowed, born in Massachusetts - she was in Yuma County in 1935.

LUCY

Madison, Missouri
""Married, at the residence of Mrs. C.E. Ownby, east of town, Wednesday evening of last week, Mr. Arthur Dry, one of the best young men in the county, and Miss Lucy G. Brown, one of the most womanly and accomplished young ladies in our knowledge. Eld. Strawn performing the ceremony which made them one. Attendants, Mr. W.O. Wright of Cairo, and Miss Tessie Mason, Mr. H.K Patton of Jacksonville and Miss Ada Brown, Mr. Hugh Armstrong and Miss Allie Davis.


After the ceremony an elegant supper was served all doing justice to bountiful spread of gold things set before them. The newly married couple go to housekeeping this week in the property recently purchased of F.W. Tabler on the north side.

The Advance wishes them prosperity and happiness, and returns thanks to the bride for a supply of choice cake." "

In 1920 Monroe County, Missouri, Arthur Dry is assistant cashier at a bank, 54, Lucy G. 50, with Catherine O. 15.
1923 Moberly, Missouri "Miss Catherine Dry, who has been attending school at Canton, returned home Sunday."

Arthur 1863-1937 # 37124674 and Lucy G. 1869-1958, # 37124691 are buried in Madison, Missouri.
Arthur's death certificate said he died in the hospital at Moberly, Missouri, his parents were George Wesley Dry born in Kentucky and Lucresia McKinney born in MIssouri.
his wife was Lucy Gosuey Dry - informant was Minor Brown of Madison, Missouri.
1957 "Mrs. Lucy Dry is reported quite ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Weaver of Colorado Springs. Mrs. Dry will be 88 in May."

Fred Weaver is in Happyville precinct, Yuma County in 1940, 33 born in Colorado, farming, with Catharine 35, born in Missouri, with Kenneth 9, Wayne 8, and Louise 7.
1950 "Mrs. Lucy Dry left Friday for Colorado Springs, Colo., to visit her daughter, Mrs. Fred Weaver and her family. Mrs. Dry will attend commencement exercises of the Colorado Springs High School. Her granddaughter, Lois Weaver, is a member of the senior class."
December 1956 " Mr. and Mrs. Fred Weaver of Colorado Springs, Colo, arrived in Madison Thursday after being called by the illness of Mrs Weaver's mother, Mrs. Arthur Dry who is a patient in Woodland Hospital. Mrs. Dry is improving, and as soon as she is able to make the trip Mr. and Mrs. Weaver plan to take her to their home in Colorado Springs."



"Mrs. Arthur Dry, life-long resident of Madison and vicinity, died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Weaver of Colorado Springs. Mrs. Dry went there last fall after becoming ill.
Born near Madison, she was the daughter of Jake Brown. Her mother died at her birth and she was reared by a grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Ownby.
She married Mr. Dry about 65 years ago and he died 20 years ago. Mr. Dry was at one time assistant cashier of the former Farmers and Merchants Bank in Madison.
Mrs. Dry was an active member of the Madison Christian Church. Besides the daughter, who is the former Miss Catherine Dry, she Is survived by two grandsons, a granddaughter and five great-grandchildren.
Her son-in-law, Mr. Weaver, died two weeks ago. The body will be brought to the Thompson Funeral Home and funeral arrangements made later. "

May 22, 1958 "Funeral services for Mrs. Arthur Dry, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Weaver, in Colorado Springs, will be held from the Madison Christian Church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. C. W. Cornn, her former minister.
The body was brought to Madison by the Thompson ambulance, and will remain at the funeral chapel until the hour of the funeral. Mrs. Dry's daughter, Mrs. Weaver and her son, Kenneth Weaver, arrived Wednesday after noon. "


May 5, 1958 Madison, Missouri " Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dry of Madison have received word of the death of Fred Weaver, Colorado Springs, husband of their niece, Mrs. Catherine Dry Weaver. Mr. Weaver died suddenly about 8:30 o'clock yesterday morning following a heart attack. He had been in ill health for three years.
Surviving besides his wife, a former Madison resident, are three children, Kenneth and Wayne Weaver of Colorado Springs and the former Miss Lois Weaver (Lois Warren) of California; five grandchildren; his mother, who lives in Wray, Colo.; one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Weaver's mother, Mrs. Arthur Dry of Madison, is in Colorado with her daughter. " Catherine D. Weaver 1904-1988 "buried w/L. Fred Weaver 1907-1958)"
She was born July 30, 1904 at Madison Missouri, dying August 1988.

Fred and Catherine's son Wayne "Ken (Kenny) Weaver (51) passed peacefully in his sleep the morning of February 3, 2013, to his eternal home with Jesus. Ken was born May 22, 1961, in Denver. At birth, his mother lovingly made an adoption plan for him, and he was adopted by his mom and dad, Wayne and Wanda Weaver, of Colorado Springs. Ken grew up in Black Forest with younger brother and sister, Rick and Lisa. Ken was preceded in death by all grandparents, including his beloved Grandma Catherine Weaver. "

1903 "Married, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Roberts, near Laird, Mr. John Brown Brown (sic) to Miss Josephine Roberts, Elder J. B. Roush officiating."


Ellen Elizabeth Brown, born 1891 in Wray, married John Logan Brown, and died in Independence, Missouri July 1991. Son was Lawrence Brown, daughter Evelyn Barwise.
This was another John Logan Brown, born about 1886 in Kansas, farming in Yuma COunty in 1920.
