FLORENCE

Florence Andrews married Louis Carra Brown January 13, 1918, recorded in Yuma County. , and they're in Cheyenne County, Kansas in 1920, Lewis 28 and Florence 19.

In 1940 Cheyenne County, Carry is 48, Florence 39, with Ethel 20 - a beauthy shop operator , Opal 14, Walter 13, and Phylis 6. All the kids were born in Kansas.

Florence May Brown. 101, Manhattan, formerly of St, Francis, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002. Mrs. Brown was born Florence May Andrews on Aug. 3, 1900, at Laird, Colo. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carra, In 1966; and a son, Walter, in 1992. Survivors include three daughters, Opal Phillips of Manhattan, Ethyle Roelfs of St. Francis and Phyllis Woods of Vancouver, Wash,; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church. St, Francis, Burial will be in St, Francis Cemetery

Carra Brown 1891-1966 and Florence M. (Andrews) Brown are buried in Saint Francis Kansas # 135543788.


Ethyle Roelfs died Feb. 6, 2011, in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the age of 91. She had been living with her daughter while recuperating from a fall. Ethyle dedicated her life to her family, her business, her community and her church. She inspired all who knew her with her kindness, generosity and her tenacity for facing all of life's trials.

Ethyle was born in St. Francis, Kan., on Feb. 3, 1920, to Louis (Carra) Brown and Florence (Andrews). She attended grade school at the Lawn Ridge Country School and graduated salutatorian from St. Francis High School in 1938. In 1939, Ethyle received her cosmetology license. On Sept. 21, 1941, she married Bernard Chester Roelfs. Ethyle worked as a cosmetologist at the Modern Beauty Shop in St. Francis for 68 years. She served on the Cosmetology Board at the Goodland Vocational Technological School for several years when the school first opened. Ethyle was a member of the First Christian Church in St. Francis where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Christian Women Fellowship, and along with her husband, Bernard, sponsored the Christian Youth Fellowship. She continued to be active in the church all of her life. Ethyle was initiated into the Rising Star Rebekah Lodge 675 in 1940. She served as Noble Grand in 1946. In 2004 Ethyle was awarded the Decoration of Chivalry. Ethyle was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary joining in June 1945. She served as treasurer, Ethyle and Bernard had one daughter, Phyllis Elaine Roelfs (Weaver) born in 1949. Ethyle was involved in Brownie and Girl Scouts as an assistant leader, 4-H as a project leader, Y-Teens as a group sponsor, and Future Homemakers of America (FHA) as an advisor throughout Phyllis's schooling. Bernard and Ethyle loved to play cards with friends and family. Because Ethyle was a cancer survivor, Bernard and Ethyle participated in the Cancer Bridge Tournaments in the community for many years. Preceding Ethyle in death were her parents, her brother, Walter Brown, and her husband, Bernard.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Roelfs Weaver, Colorado Springs; her sisters, Opal Phillips, Manhattan, Phyllis Woods, Vancouver, Wash.; her two grandchildren, Thomas Weaver and his wife, Stacey, Carrollton, Texas, and Lianne Weaver, Denver, Colo.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church, St. Francis, on Feb. 11, with Pastor Jeff Landers proceeding. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Phillips, Paul Phillips, Bruce Roelfs and Dave Wildman. Casket bearers were Tom Weaver, Tom Roelfs, Jeremy Roelfs, Jonathan Roelfs, Leo Meyer and Dave Roberson.

Burial was at the St. Francis Cemetery. There was a Rebekah Lodge Burial Ceremony. Memorials may go the First Christian Church, St. Francis or for establishing a Cosmetology scholarship in her name for students attending the Goodland Vocational Technological.



Jeffrey L. Phillips, age 56, died Saturday November 21, 2009 in Manhattan, Kansas.
He was born on September 14, 1953 in Oberlin, Kansas the son of Robert and Opal (Brown) Phillips. He graduated from Clark Central High School in Athens, Georgia in 1971. Jeffrey was a draftsman and material manager in the Mobile Home industry and a sales person for many years in a Manhattan Appliance store. Jeffrey was baptized at an early age in the Federated Church in Oberlin, Kansas. He was very active in the Cub Scouts and later the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed wrestling in Junior High and High School. He loved all animals, collecting antiques, volunteering at the Crisis Center and most of all being with his family.
Survivors include his parents: Robert and Opal Phillips of Manhattan; 2 brothers: Tom and his wife Jenny of Seattle, Washington; Paul and his wife Elizabeth of Woodland Park, Colorado and a sister: Mary Vestal and her husband Rod of Poetry, Texas. He is also survived by 3 nieces, 3 nephews, 1 grand niece and many friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday November 28, 2009 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Rick Neubauer officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Sunrise Cemetery at a later date.
