Yuma County Pioneer Photographs:
Adington and Sarah (Snell) Whitman, Yuma
"Isaac Addington Whitman was born on April 5, 1840 in Fulton County, Illinois the son of George Whitman, who was born in April of 1809 and who was a Methodist minister, and Susan (Green) Whitman, who was born in March of 1810 in New York.
George Whitman and Sarah Green were married c. 1830"
On August 11, 1862, Isaac A. Whitman volunteered in Marshall County, to serve in a company which was being raised in the Henry, Illinois area of Marshall County for service in the Union army, by a man by the name of Elias C. Brearley. At the time he volunteered, Isaac listed Henry Township in Marshall County, Illinois as his place of residence..

Addington Whitman, for service in B., 86th Illinois, Infantry, received an invalid pension in May 1886, and Sarah E. Whitman a widow's pension in May 1818, from Colorado.
Adington proved up a quarter in section 7, 1N 48W in 1891.
"It is not known when or even if, for that matter, the 86th did locate and get in contact with Private Isaac A. Whitman. At least some of the boys were of the belief that Isaac was in Colorado. It does appear that Isaac Whitman was in contact with the surviving members of the 86th back in Peoria. The last mailing address that was published for him, though, was in 1894 when he was believed to be residing in Yuma, Colorado. What is known is that Private Isaac A. Whitman never attended or was able to attend any of the reunions. If he did, in fact, find out about the reunions, the great difficulty and cost of making a trip from Colorado to Peoria and back in the late 1800's and early 1900's undoubtedly would play a part in his decision whether to make that trip or not."

Another Grand Army of the Republic man answered the final roll call Tuesday night April 2, 1918, when death entered the Whitman home, 1112 Sixth street, and Isaac Addington Whitman, aged 78 years, passed away. Although having been confined to a wheel chair for thirteen years suffering from rheumatism contracted during the civil war, the deceased apparently was in his usual health when he retired about 9 o'clock, and an hour later, while peacefully sleeping, he passed away.
Isaac A. Whitman was born April 5, 1840 in Fulton County, Illinois, and had he lived two more days he would have celebrated his 78th birthday. He enlisted in Co. B, 86th Illinois infantry and served throughout the war. He was one of the brave men who went with "Sherman to the sea."
In 1869, he was married to Sarah Emily Snell at Henry, Ill., and 20 years later came to Colorado. His father was one of the pioneer Methodist ministers of Illinois, coming to that state from New York in 1837. He also was an earnest member of the Methodist church for nearly 40 years, and was also a member of the local post, G.A.R.
Five children were born, of which four survive him. They are Clarence M., of Peck, Idaho; Claude S., of Denver; Maurice A. and Bertha H., of Greeley. He is survived by his widow also, and by eight grandchildren, two of whom, Paul W. and Lee S., have lived in the Whitman home for the past ten years."
